We switched our kitchen hardware out 5 years ago, but now we are ready to make the switch again. We are stuck with our oak cabinets due to other investments we have made in our house. The original cabinet hardware was brass with white porcelain and we switched that out to a black traditional hardware. We are wanting to move a little more contemporary. We tried the "standard" round contemporary pulls and the were a little too contemporary. Let me know what you think of our current selection. It might be hard to tell from the picture, but they are brushed nickel.

We are planning a neutral back splash and some red accents in the kitchen. We are open to other kitchen suggestions from the everyone....paint, backsplash, accent color.

I'm no decorator but I think it looks great, especially your oak cabinets! I love the darker stain on them along with the dark countertops.

Red would go great with it, IMO. I think a lot of colors would fit right in.

What about a colorful area rug in the kitchen with some red in it? A round one would be nice!

I love; the cabinets, counters,tile flooring and stainless steel appliances.

I really dislike; light fixture, the red valance over the window(nothing would be better),the trim board over the window and the cabinet hardware. I would sugest stainless steel cabinet hardware, your choice of styles. If you like red, then how about a red canister set? Or a red toaster oven, mixer and blender?

So far your doing a GREAT job!!!

I will try and answer/address some of the above comments: the bamboo steamer in the Chinese kitchen is, indeed, sitting atop a large wok on top of the second Cooktek burner. I have a gas burner in the kitchen because my large traditional clay stock pots (used to make pork or chicken stock) will not cook over induction, and also for searing meat on a cast iron griddle (done in the Chinese kitchen because of the smoke). The exhaust hood in the Chinese kitchen bobbie46, was custom made by a local company with (I think) about 1600 CFM and a large surface area for catchment, made when we thought we would be using a Robert Yick commercial propane wok cooker. It is perhaps a bit unnecessarily large as the induction woks give off no combustion fumes. In the main kitchen we used a Ventahood, the least expensive that exhausts about 900 CFM. The sprayer was one I found on the sale table that is no longer made, the pot-fillers are inexpensive commercial ones. Fancy residential companies make all these things, but they are pricey. I went into the back remainders room for them at a local plumbing supply. Cpovey, to respond to your AGA comments: I watched as the AGA was put together; it is not only insulated by the heavy cast iron itself, but a huge amount (came on its own pallet) of insulation is packed inside. Indeed, it does "leak heat", however in our house--as in England and Scandinavia-- we need the extra heat to keep our main room/kitchen warm enough in Spring, Winter and Fall. In the summer I turned it off for a little while (making it possible to really clean it)--but boy did the cooks miss it!

I personally think that if you want to do, do some mockups in the program you used for the layout and rotate it around from the wall across from the bathroom and see. I would totally do it, but I have a more eclectic style than others who need things to match or even coordinate more than I do. And I think what you described isn't wildly different enough to really throw things off. Have you considered a shallow hutch like set of cabinets in the hallway between the two sections? Masybe something with 18" lowers and 12" uppers done in a third style to provide a visual break between the two sections. Also have you considered switching the ovens and the range? It might help with landing area to have the range where I think the ovens are? Just a thought as it looks like the landing area to the right of the stove is pretty tiny.

Okay, Niley--after you came up with the good idea of replacing the wood panels with some kind of frosted glass, I've been dying to know if you'd made any decisions. Don't know if you've investigated that possibility further, but you wouldn't have to replace them all, to get a big change. I know you'd love to have a new kitchen, but really your kitchen is very nice the way it is. I'm sure just a few small touches could freshen it up, so I'm curious to know if you've done anything to it.

With the possibility of multiple cooks in the house, and children who will also be learning to cook and help in the kitchen, I'd include a prep sink on the island. Helpers can load or unload the DW, or gather dishes to set the table, without crossing into the prep path. I increased the seating overhang to 15"--the minimum recommended by the NKBA.I, too, live in a multi-generational, multi-cook, household--my daughter, her husband, and their two children live with me. I love my second sink!

I actually like the black handles, better. Red accents would be lovely.

I think your kitchen is lovely. I should send you my coffee maker - it is a black Bunn with a stainless carafe, and it would look better in your kitchen than in mine!

I would go with a more ornate black handle; however, I realize you want a more contemporary look. I like a black or bronze handle with your cabinets. You can still have a sleek look without having to use chrome...

I'm not loving the brushed nickel with the oak. I think the black ones look better, but maybe something a little more contemporary would appeal to you more than the one you posted. I chose these black knobs and pulls for my cherry cabinets:

Where did you get your light fixture? I like it. Need something similar for my own kitchen. Also, did you get my email about my living room chair in response to your email? I'm never sure if emails make it around here...)
