We had an early spring this year, so I was expecting an early fall. The last couple weeks the spiders have been moving in, a vole has taken up residence in the garage and tries nightly to get into the bird seed bins. Wednesday and Thursday I could smell fall coming, early Friday evening it swepted in. The stiff cool breeze yesterday seemed so out of place, but was a relief after the hot dry summer. Yes, change is good. The smell of soup stock simmering on the stove, and tomatoes roasing in the oven is a welcome change after smelling grilled foods almost all summer. In addition to making warm comfort foods again, there are so many indoor projects to work on that winter can be as full as summer. Settling down for the evening under a warm blanket, candles flickering, with a good movie to watch is sublime. There is time to read, rest and rejuvinate. And, of course, winter means paging through the flood of garden catalogs, planning changes to the garden, and the anticipation of spring.

Mine grows "wild" in the garden as a few plants go to seed each year. Most of them I chop out. But--they haven't started growing yet this year. Can't call it summer here when the days are only in the 60's and low 70's. You aren't too late to plant. They recommend early spring as it will come up quite early while the ground is still pretty cool, like peas and onions. You can then plant repeatedly all summer. Cilantro is also pretty frost tolerant and takes quite a bit of frost before freezing down. Anything that comes up late in the summer will usually stay in good shape until the temps. drop to around 15 or so.

I turned on the grow lights this week, as soon as the rain set in. I have some galtonia, grasses and a couple of tree seed on the go. Not that the rain stops me from working out doors.

floral_uk, thanks for your interesting comment on that pot of ”scallions/green onions.” ”Those appear to be walking, Egyptian or top setting onions, Allium × proliferum.” They sure look to be. ➡️ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_onion I buy ”scallions” from the grocery store and plant the trimmed root end. There is no sign indicating they are really ”tree onions” and for my purposes and the store’s it doesn’t matter. However, I thank you for pointing that out. Now I am a few pages more informed and I’ve enjoyed taking a trip to tead about them. Last year I actually happened to buy a package of seeds labeled ”Scallions.” I will try to sow some of those. We use a lot of green onions/scallions/tree onions and the market is 25 miles RT, so it’s great to have some on hand.
