You'll remember the fiftyish, pretty, vivacious, smart, outgoing lady that I met a couple of years ago at investment group and thought that I'd like to get to know better ...

.. and did?

And, after discussing her plan of refusing extra medical care for her 91-year old uncle with Alzheimer's, who'd been operated on for throat cancer and couldn't keep solid food down, was informed a short while later of his death, wondered about travelling about 120 miles to the funeral of this man whom I'd never met, but went, had the rad on my car blow out and had to be towed home?

Well, when I visited her home recently, she told me how she'd heard a local radio station asking for videos of the toughest-looking old beaters of cars around, so they could have a draw, with the owner of the one judged the worst getting a nice bonus toward the purchase of a new car ...

... and she thought of mine!

We were in luck (or, she was at least - as I had some reservations about entering ... but who can turn down the entreaties of an enthusiastic lady, huh?), as it was the last day for entries.

So she made a video, with this guy pointing out the bad spots, hole in a fender where a guy scraped it, rust spots, etc.

But I forgot the (plastic) bullet holes that the former owner, an auto insurance adjuster, had asked whether I wanted removed when I bought it, but I'd said,that, no, to leave them there - that they weren't hurting anything.

And I forgot to point out that I have to pull a piece of baler twine to get the back hatch to open, as the key won't work.

When she asked my name, I told her ... then added, in a low voice, "I think".

When she asked my age, I said that the car is some over a quarter my age, and I'm no spring chicken ... that it is 23 years old ...

... and that I'm 82.

Haven't heard any results ...

... but son can scarcely believe that it's on Youtube ....

... and some of the buddies at the investment group are getting a kick out of it.

Have got to find out the address on Youtube ...

... for daughter will want to see it.

I have a good picture of me, too, for those who wanted to see one, the other day - just have to find how to ship it from my email address to the KT location.

It's been sunny and warm here, grass growing ... I did my first wash in a while a couple of days ago, finally got it all hung on the line and will need to take the last in when I get home tonight.

Not much business at the income tax clinic at the church and the coordinator has one or two more coming in tomorrow to do e-file, so I'm not needed, (it's a 20km.+ drive, one way): doing returns on paper and most folks want the efile service, so they get their refund faster ... so I'll need to do some garden prep.

Who knew that an old car would be such a chick magnet? ;) If this keeps up, you're actually going to have to ditch the old underwear. LOL!

Sounds like much of the same here in the lower 48. Even here is ND where the oil boom is bringing in so much money BUT everything is way too high for the average person. Just ask some of the Canadians that come south to shop and try to find a place to stay.

Skunks and highways don't mix well ... and when they've tried, usually there's a reminder for later travellers for a time. Coons don't, either. Or dogs, for that matter ... and this f c doesn't mind running angleways over the road, ahead of the car: she hasn't been trained how to manage, around cars. (Skunks, either, for that matter). I took the course that stockbokers take, thirty years ago ... but there was some downturn in the markets and brokers weren't hiring. I got on with a mutual fund broker a couple of years later ... compensation totally by commission ... but after a year I hadn't sold enough to suit the second tier guy above me ... so was "decommissioned". Some years ago a parishuioner in the post office one day thought it a bit odd that his clergy person subscribed to "The Financial Post" ... ... and I allowed as how it was my impression that bread cost me the same price that it cost him. So I worked for years as a personal financial consultant selling no financial products - folks didn't need to watch me closely, to see whether I was talking out of the side of my mouth that dealt with what was good for them ... ... or the side of my mouth dealing substantially with what was good for me. When I worked for the mutual fund broker, there was a guy there who'd been a fee-only planner for some time prior to that, and he said that was a good way to starve ... and I somewhat agree. People claim that they'd like unbiased advice ... but wonder why they should pay me ... for advice that they can get elsewhere ... for free. "Free", huh? Most financial planners are actually sales-peiople ... for insurance or mutual funds ... or, in recent years, stockbrokers, as well. I'm in London, need to get my diuretic prescription refilled, and meet the mutual fund guy in a half hour, so ... ... see you all later. ole joyfuelled

OJ, I'm reading your post a day later, but sure hope your outing was fun and rewarding. I understand your having a little difficulty finding the right "title" for someones new person in their lives. I'm not saying this in disdain, just that I'm so behind times, I can't keep up with this and hyphenated names. Again, Dear OJ, I hope you had a terrific time.

Local Toyota(?) dealer's contributing a $15,000. voucher toward a new car.

When she asked what I'd do if I won ...

... I suggested that I'd probably sell the new one and go on driving the old one!

As for the underwear ...

... I'm the only one that sees that!

You guys wouldn't have known about it, had I not told you!

Just imagine - a guy comes seeking some simple, plain advice ...

... and never hears the last of it!

Most people don't like getting their undies in a knot, but Joyful has to get his in a knot to keep them in place. :)

I don't think Ol Joyful would actually buy a new car as long as he can keep think this one running. LOL!

Good Luck OJ, I hope the Gods are smiling down on you,and your klunker is chosen. this from someone who drives a 22 yr old car, but it is quite good condition. My Dodge Colt has those automatic seat belts, with a lap belt that has to be manually put on. I stopped at a store and there were a couple teens standing near and saw the seat belts release by them selves. One of the boys came over and asked about them and thought they were 'cool' and wondered where I got them as they would help him because he always forgets to put his seat belts on and even got a ticket once. I told him my car is older than he is, and cars used to come with them that way.

OJ, you are a cutie-patootie! I was imagining a really, really bad clunker but I've seen cars a lot worse than yours. In fact, Harry was driving one when I met him. You could actually see the pavement in one spot on the driver-side floor. It also explained why he had multiple tool boxes in the back. As soon as we got married, that baby was history!! :-)

All I got was one view of a front wheel (the one on the side that lacks the split holes above the wheel).

(Too bad you didn't get to see the lady behind the camera).

The car was missing if I pushed more than most gently on the throttle, so I took it in for repair ... they said likely new spark plugs or wires, put them on and it worked better ...

... but ...

... there was low pressure in one cylinder and they thought that it needed to have the valves ground ...

... educated guess probably $600. - 700.

When I took it in the following week they lent me a van while they were working on mine - gas gauge didn't work, probably about 1/4 tank ... so I put in $10.00 worth.

Friend had said he'd like some straw for his garden and I figured that I could get several bales into the van, and only one or two into my little car ... and the back hatch has to be opeend by baler twine.

Loaded a bunch of tarps into the van to collect the straw bits, it's old and breaks easily.

I've been watching the female canine of a friend who's having surgery for a growth on his neck, and a boisterous canine and a half dozen bales of straw in the same van aren't a recipe for a good game. The tarps covered most of the necessary area, so I was able to get it reasonably well cleaned out without too great effort.

When I went to check on the car ... it seems that a valve was a bit bent, so more work necessary.

When they were finished, bill was about $1,200.

So I can't let the car die for quite a while, yet!

I don't think that I've seen the lady since - she'll get a kick out of the dilemma, I expect!

Her uncle who died at 91 had been a major executive in a large Canadian supermarket chain ...

... she recently installed real granite counter tops and top of island which includes counter for eating and bar stools, in her kitchen: shiny ... and shiny bits that appear deep into the structure.

Was it on the video that I was characterized as, " ... a sweet old dude"?

She says that I remind her of her grandfather.

Time to bring this literary masterpiece to a close, I think.
