Dinner tonight?

I made a new recipe today for tarragon-pasta-seafood salad. We'll have that with crusty rolls. What are you having at your house?

Just came in from a surprise birthday party for a friend.
I loaded up on salami, cheese and crackers, so I'm full. No birthday cake for me!

Last night on the coast. We're going to a little hole in the wall bar we found in the middle of some seafood processing plants. They make everything from scratch and everything is so good. We decided to have our last meal here there. We will split an order of handmade jalepeno poppers and I am going to have handmade onion rings and grilled halibut. I think hubby is planning on fish and chips. One good thing about going home is that we'll be back to consuming fewer calories, more veggies and no deep fried foods. I love anything deep fried, but I know it's not good for me or my figure. :-)

I made braised lamb shanks with polenta. First time with that recipe and while good, didn't have the flavor intensity I had imagined :-( Have more than enough leftovers so will try to freeze most of it. Not sure what to do to zip things up more........ I often make my own version of farmer's casserole but with home fry potatoes (and onions, ham, etc.) so no advance prep and no baking - just pan fried. I just fry an egg to go with. I guess that is more like a ham hash. But it makes a fast and tasty breakfast or dinner!! ps. green chili has no tomato base. Often called 'white chili', it can have green chilis (mild) or tomatillos to give it color. And is usually made with poultry rather than beef.

John, I quite liked them and DH looked quite keen when I said he could have the extra one. He also said he’d like it again. Really they were pretty easy and straightforward to make, even in my (limited space and equipment) city kitchen. I’d do them again as is, and I might experiment with a version without mushrooms but with sun dried tomatoes and kalamata olives for a more Mediterranean flavour... Please, feel free to take the idea and run with it! Let us know how you went :-)

Dad always cooked when he could. Weekends, and then when he retired to work from home... he was cooking up a storm. Mom always cooked, too. Two different styles... Mom followed recipes, Dad played Chemistry Experiment Kit. Both were great at it. I learned a lot via osmosis from both, and have always been confused when hearing that women were supposed to be in the kitchen... WHY not both? Mom wouldn't let Dad clean up, he ended up with water and soap spritzed everywhere. So, um, that's where I came in... (Maybe I should have tried cleaning up the same way he did... ) Oh, after Dad retired/worked from home, they loved to grocery shop together. They'd usually hit three or four groceries at the same jaunt out. There were only a few failed meals, but everyone should cook often enough that they have mistakes to learn from. I'm single, but my brother loves to cook as much as Dad did. He experiments a bit less (I mean, how many people will bring home an entire goat's head and cook it?) but he's an excellent cook in his own right, too. And he cleans his kitchen along with his wife.

Quinoa cooked in water and orange juice.
Stir-fried carrots, onions, green beans and asparagus. Balsamic, honey and olive oil stirred in, and the quinoa stirred into it.
Wonderful!!!!

Have my Lemon Bundt cake in my "new" oven now. LOL

My 2 youngest sons, their Dad and a friend or two are out back cooking tripas (no thanks). I think I'll order a chicken fried steak plate.

Geez, I have no idea what tripas or quinoa even is/are.

We're having chicken breasts, cream of chicken soup, mushrooms and cut up potatoes cooked in the oven, will have a salad with that.

I don't have a clue what I'm having tonight. I'm meeting my sister, her daughters and her daughter in law at Moxies for dinner tonight. It's girls night! The first of hopefully many to come. We want to make this a once in a month get together. I can't wait.

I have a special surprise for one of my nieces. I hope she loves it as much as I do.

LOL Maryann, I don't blame you. I'm not crazy about quinoa either--it's a texture thing--but I have had it. Maybe I didn't put enough "flavor" in mine.

I can always tell when it's about dinner time here. I read the posts and want everything everybody else is having. :-) ('Cept tripas)

patti43: Would appreciate a follow-up on your pasta salad. Did you like it? I am always looking for recipes which use fresh tarragon. Thanks.

Well, this afternoon was the baby shower and it lasted quite awhile. There were at least 27 of us ladies and two babies. We had a raspberry filled cake and a chocolate and yellow cake, strawberries with a cream cheese dip, big butterfly cookies, nuts, mints, chocolate and strawberry punch. Since it was supper time when we left after they put things away we stopped and I got a Big Mac combo meal with a Dr. Pepper. I think I am ready to go to bed already.

Reporting after dinner: beautiful day here - we worked outside in the yard and garden ALL day. We came inside at 7pm - burgers on the grill and salad for dinner. A cocktail on the porch watching the sunset just before dinner.

We went to a Wild Game Feed sponsered by the JC's It was so good this year with a variety of buffalo, moose, pheasant, elk, salads and homemade desserts. This was one of the best. Not sure if there was Antelope this year or Goose. Fund raiser.

Back from dinner! I had a medium-rare New York strip steak with steamed brocolli and french fries. The steak was cooked perfectly. I was quite impressed. And the company and conversation was fantastic too. :o)

Tobygirl, the salad was disappointing. It sounded so good with shrimp, pasta, smoked salmon and asaragus. The dressing was lemon juice, s&p, tarragon and olive oil. It was blah. I think it needs something--maybe onion? I'll put some in it today and see if we like it for lunch. It made a huge bowl full so I hope the onion helps. Any other suggestions before I dive in?

Hostapasta, it sounds like you had an enjoyable, productive day.

Nita, I don't know how you do it but you cook a delicious meal every night!

Debby ab--you were out a little late last night, missy!! LOL! Glad you had fun with your sis and the girls.

The time on these boards isn't the same as the time in Alberta. :o) I was home before 10 here. I replied to this post about an hour or two later. I was sound asleep long before the time posted on my last post here. LOL

patti43: If that was my salad, and I had a lot left, I would try to salvage it with some Hellman's mayonnaise.
