Have you seen my dream tile?

Well, I've been on the hunt for a tile to put on the fireplace in my kitchen. It's been a tough search with nothing that looks like what I have in my head...until today.

I ran across this tile -

Crossvile Modern Mythology Phoenix Mosaic

It's close to perfect. Close. The black is almost a dead ringer for my soapstone, the green looks very much like my backsplash color and the white brings the lighter color I was looking for.

It's a little too dark overall, I think. I wish I could find a tile that was like this, but with a little more white in the mix.

Short of buying more of this (slightly expensive) mosaic and plucking white tiles from one sheet to stick on to others, I'm not sure I'll find anything else...

Any ideas?

I was just looking at a site the other day that had a ton of mosaics in interesting stones and patterns. There was a lot that I'd never seen before.

Www.Stone-mosaics.com also pakistanonyxmarble.com. Don't know about buying from these sites or their prices since I didn't get that far.

They had a lot in jade colors and some were stone pieces that had 2-3 distinct colors in each stone. Most of the greens I saw were lighter.

You can do a google image search for any site and you'll get thumbnails of a ton versus going through the site. Might help you blaze through faster.

Example Search this phrase without quotes "site:stone-mosaics.com" and click images tab.

You can also try the keywords green white mosaic tile and go thru the pix like a slide show from all sites that come up. Feel like I've been doing this all day everyday lately as I've searched for my dream tile! Good luck!!

I just wanted to say that that tile is really spectacular. I'm almost having a bit of tile envy and I'm not even finished with my reno yet ;) That would have been SO nice behind my hood fan ... fortunately I still love the one I have!

I was just wondering if you used a lighter coloured grout if that might be enough to lighten it up for you? Something close to the same as the white tiles? Might be a bit hard to keep clean, but it might be OK on a fireplace instead of a messy backsplash, depends on what sort of messes might be acquired on the fireplace in YOUR kitchen (sorry, if you've posted about layouts and such I'm just not familiar with it). Just a thought. Maybe you can put some grout on your sample to see if that would do it for you? Or maybe your supplier has a photo of it installed? Or at very least maybe looking at it with something white underneath the mesh? Just a thought.

You might look into glazed ceramic mosaics. There used to be several companies that offered "medleys" such as what you're looking at in that pic with the glass mosaics, but I don't know if they're still available. They were big in the 80's but I think pretty much petered out. You might still find someone who carries them, though.

Dawn, you were right. I emailed the designer and she told me it's St. Petersburg. We don't have an AS dealer anywhere near to us, so I could order them through her. The price as shown in the mag is nearly $100 a sf plus shipping and tax. I could save about 50% by not using the inserts, but that's what makes the tile IMO. We need about 20sf, so this is a major purchase. We'll see after Christmas.

I actually like your glass. I am going to try to use tempered glass. So much easier to clean. I see that you have a 3"-5" tall backguard on your stove. That may be the difference between our stoves. My rangetop must have a 6" or taller backguard, but when I bought the Bluestar 7 years ago, neither the salesman nor Bluestar told me I needed a back guard of minimum 6" $800-1100. Now, I am hearing that the heat can overheat inside the wall behind drywall and cause a fire. My rangetop is pulled out 3" so I can't use a backguard which attaches to the rangetop. That would leave a 3" gap between my rangetop and my back wall. I could not clean behind it and it would look rather stupid. Your house sounds like my house. When we removed some of the drywall, we found an electric wire that looked like those old brown lamp cords. They spliced it into another wire. We had hot wires with no caps on them just lying in the attic. One ceiling/roof beam was supported on one end by a single vertical 2x4 and the other end was supported by a steel I beam. 4 bolts were supposed to hold it, but 3 bolts had completely sheered off and the remaining bolt was severely bent, so it would have sheered off eventually. This was holding our roof up! Inspections can't catch stuff like that. There were building codes when this home was built, but no one followed them. Makes me mad to pay for someone else's screw ups.

Thanks, mamameme, I'll check those out!

mmhmm - what a brilliantly simple thing to do - grout! *palm to forehead*

My sample is mounted on a board, so I couldn't play with it too much. I ended up drawing all the grout in photoshop (I'm becoming quite the photoshop master in the last few weeks!) and it is almost exactly what a had in my head.

My fireplace is sort of removed from the kitchen proper and I don't see why white grout would be something to worry about. Well, except that I DO have 3 boys...white ANYTHING can give me cause for concern!
