pool rennovation guy broke my pump HELP!!!

So they just finished re-plaster, re-tile, re-cope, new concrete decking. Now my pool pump doesn't work. It worked before the job, now it doesn't work. I need a pump asap for chemical start up. They said it was running on 110V and was running half peed, and it should be running at 220V, it would save me money. So they changed breakers to run at 220V. Now its broken. What would you do? They say its not their fault please help!!

ok I am going to get a new pump for 675 hayward super II 1.5hp. installed. The BIG question is, my pool has been filled with water 6 hours now with no circulation and only metal sequestrate in it. What problems will i have? Is this plaster job (diamond brite french gray) totally screwed? Do they need to do an extra acid wash? It looks like it is already streaking a whole bunch, maybe I am being paranoid. The will 'not be able' to install the new pump until tomorrow morning. please help....

I would guess as long as the plaster is fully submerged you should be ok.

After reading all of the posts here, i wonder how in the world our relatives cleaned things up without a pressure washer!! Why, they used a broom or mop, with liberal use of soap and muscle! Never had to worry about the things breaking--oh, maybe a mop handle, or the broom lost some bristles, but they never had to borrow the neighbors fancy power washer, which weren't available 40 years ago, except for commercial use. Seems to me, there's a sucker born every minute, reinforced by the stories of all the troubles apparently inherent with powered pressure washers! And--if the thing ain't made by an American company, don't buy it! and especially not if it has Chinese made parts! Back when i was a kid (the 30's) toys were imported from Japan, that were of such inferior quality, the stores sold them really cheap! And, the only thing that came from Japan that we took notice of was Pearl Harbor! Rusty

Well they took there sweet time getting out to my house to look at the damage....a week to be exact! Every time I looked out there I got mad, just wanted to cut it all back but had to leave some of the damage so they could see it. I let them know that chlorine gas is no longer permitted on the property! And they agreed to pay for the cost of replacing everything. The manager told me to give him a call and let him know how much it will cost. I explained to him that I grew all these flowers and the gourd vine, and spanish flag by seed and that they are annuals. Also, that with the weather heating up now I will not replant annuals as they will most likely not survive. Anyhow, we'll see if they give me hard time when I call them to give them a number ($) He told me that they also had another employee just kill someones prize geraniums by dumping salt into the flower bed, then he said "I'm learning alot of gardening tips by putting out the fires" Geez! Salt?! Thanks for your advice, Z.

Responding to RepairGuy: I agree with your advice about just repairing this pump as I am always looking for ways to save money and because my utility bill has not been that much, but I was told by the staff at the pool place - where I took the pump for the "seal" issue, that it also had a possible bearing issue and it might last for a month or a few years - so they recommended replacing with a 2 speed for that reason and because of the energy efficiency. And then when it was clear the new pump could not be installed for a week or so and with the pool getting green, I took the pump apart and figured out what I needed and bought a seal for about $12. I put it in, and hooked the pump back in for a temporary fix. It now works, but still has a very small leak - not certain just why. But more importantly, the motor sounds quite different - louder and a higher pitch. I am not certain why it did not sound that way before I took it off, but anyway it worries me a bit that something else might be going on with the motor. And then when I was trying to figure out what part I might need I located the original pool installation documents - it was installed in 1992 - so it is 15 years old (I thought it was only about 10 years old) It never needed any repairs for all of those years - so have been, I guess, pretty lucky. But all in all I thought I should probably replace it now - especially with rebates now offered.

Just my two cents, on heat transfer in a dynamic environment. I.e. fluid as opposed to a solid block of anything. There is a lot of opposing theory here. First lets try and apples and apples it. If the surface area and thermal dynamic properties of the heat exchanger are the same i.e. one is aluminum a one is copper. And the only variable is the speed at which the water flows through the pipe. You first have to understand the effects of laminar flow on the xsfer of heat (energy) from the walls of the heat exchanger to the fluid in the center of the pipe. Due to the increase of friction at the edges of the water Colum inside the pipe , the water in the center of the pipe flows faster, with me so far? The statement "heat xsfer is greatest when the deference between the bodies is greatest" is in a way correct when you look at percentage of transfer. What you fail to take into account is that the transfer works both ways. At the same time you are heating the water , you are cooling the pipe. Thus requiring more energy to heat the pipe. Since the energy to heat the pipe is limited i.e. the amperage of your wiring in a heat pump or flow of gas in a furnace, You must stick to real world. Another fact is heat transfer has momentum. Once you pass a point of the curve you see a ramping effect called thermal momentum. Soooo if the gauge is how fast you raise a body of water outside the exchanger i.e. a pool or spaÂ the question is simple the longer a molecule is in proximity to a heat source the more energy it will adsorb. So the two options are 1. to run that "piece" of water quickly through the exchanger so it can deposit its heat into the body of water and go back and get more? Or , 2. to allow that "piece" of water more time in the exchanger to gather more energy to deposit it in to the water. The end result is the same, Hot. The deference is the curve. We use this formula every day in controlling chemical reactions through temperature. The slower moving fluid reaches the steeper part of the curve faster, thus gaining Thermal momentum fasterÂ.. ending up with the body of water reaching a desired temperature faster. DamÂ.. Even if the PH and total alkalinity are off by a lot? I am going to bring a water sample to the pool store to check the numbers and see how bad it is.

As long as you are brushing it, and keeping PH under control, running the pump is less of an issue.

We do a low ph start on many gray, and dk gray finishes, where we dont start up the filter for 3 to 4 days.
We usually put in a small circ pump to keep the acid from settling.

A small, submersible, cover pump, tied to a pool pole with polypropylene string/rope, stretched across the width of the pool is what I use. It propels itself in a circle to provide a gentle circulation.

also, should i push for this guy to replace my pump? or take him to small claims court? It did work before they started messing with the voltage levels and stuff...

I wouldn't have let them leave ;-)
But I am a bit mean like that. I would have it replaced.
Have it professionally examined beforehand to see what exactly they did. Document the heck out of it, and take photos, then sue them.

Pool pump motors can be wired to run on either 110 or 220.
IF your pump was wired for 110 and supplied with 110 it was not running at 1/2 speed but was perhaps drawing more amperage than necessary.
IF the pool guy changed the power supply to 220 in this case but did not re-wire the back of the motor, the motor would trip on it's own safety controls BUT WOULD PROBABLY NOT BE DAMAGED. Check the back of the motor, where the wires are connected to see if the motor is set for 110 or 220, it is usually a case of moving 2 wires to different connectors.
IF your pump was wired for 220 and receiving 110 it would run at 1/2 speed. This is usually really obvious because the motor doesn't sound right and hardly moves any water.

So what they SAID (who knows what it was really) was the voltage was 110V, but the motor setting was 220V, so they changed the power to 220V and left the motor setting at 220V, so they said it was running half speed. But The pump sounded normal to me and did pull water without problems. And after the messed with it, the pump makes horrible noise due to impeller bent all up and motor is bad. I have the old motor and will take it in to see if there is anyway to tie what the did back to breaking the motor.
