Pool Guy torched my gourd!

Ok, I'm new to this forum....sorry if this topic has been covered.

I have a new pool service. This new company uses chlorine gas in a tank with a hose that goes into the pool to regulate the chemicals. I came home this a.m. from taking the kids to school to find that my beautiful gourd vine, sunflowers, and zinnias in half the flower bed near my pool pump had been torched. That's what it looked like anyhow, like someone had taken a blow torch to them. I called the pool service and they admitted fault and said that the pool guy must have gotten too close with the gas. So, for anyone who uses a pool service that uses chlorine gas, you might want to ask them to stay away from the plants around your pool. And for anyone who has already experienced this.........will my gourd completely die? zinnias...dead? sunflower?

I wanted to cry!

I use colloidal silver water, and have heard that it's good for the plants too, might this help? Maybe if I spritz the leaves with some silver water?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

DO NOT start dumping things on the plants - nop fertilizer, no vitamins, etc. Just trim off the dead stuff and continue to water as needed.

They MAY die from the chloring ... they WILL die if you stress them further by applying more chemicals.

I would add, drench them with water to further dilute the chemical.

Then send the pool maintenance company a certified letter confirming that they admitted fault during your conversation.

If you lose your plantings, send the pool maintenance company a bill & if they don't pay it, report it to the licensing entity in your state/county/whatever, report to Better Business Bureau (won't do any good, but maybe the pool company doesn't know that!), &, as a last resort file suit in small claims court.

If I owned that company, I would not want my name on public record as having been sued by a consumer for destroying her landscaping.

What if your pets had been out there?

Heck, what if your kid had traipsed out there???

Hi Pam, It's a 50 foot circle. The beds are 3.5-4 feet wide, so there are 10 circular "rows". Of course, you can make it much smaller. I have 6 wide paths that cut it up like a pie to give me wheelbarrow access. After everything is planted and gets going, I try to mulch with composted horse manure/shavings. The soil is now so soft and friable I don't need to rototill at all. I rototilled to prepare the soil the first time, but I've read several places that tilling is not a good annual routine. This spring I planted asparagus. I'm so excited! They say it lasts 15 - 20 years, so I dug a deep trench, added manure and potash, and tried to do it right. We'll see, the sprouts are not out yet. I bought potatoes too, but they are not in yet. I plant onions next to all the circular paths. They take up very little space and grow straight up, so they don't block the paths. I use the outside rows for all my starter trees and shrubs. I've planted many spring bulbs along the rows (daffodils, hyacinths). They make great cut flowers and die back when the veggies get going. You did an amazing job - I think most pool builders could learn a thing or two from what you have accomplished here. As someone who has plumbed hundreds of pools with similar configurations I just want to provide you with a little bit of insight into your underground plumbing chase. While it is clear that you took a ton of care to have a clean raceway to run the lines it, you made a few key errors that anyone looking to reproduce your results should avoid. In the areas where you have needed to raise one pipe over another you used double 45's to create a saddle. While this is the right choice from a system efficiency and friction loss standpoint, having underground 45's like that can be a problem. You will not be able to sufficiently compact under the saddle and as a result the top pipe will sink over time as the ground settles. Even a tiny movement of the pipe with rigid lines can cause a failure - and the 45 saddle is a weak point for a failure. As much as having back to back 90 fittings is bad, they are able to take the compression of ground movement better than an unsupported 45. Again, amazing job...just want to lend some experience. One more thing worth mentioning is that when you have a pipe penetration through the shell it can be a good idea to 90 down immediately. If the rigid pipe comes straight out, again it has to endure the force of the ground settling around it. By turning the pipe down with a 90 you do increase the friction losses in he system but relieve this leverage point which is a known failure point in swimming pool design. Organic ... this is a custom project you're describing so far. Custom projects REQUIRE custom pricing. Any deviation from that law of nature will cause frustration. For example ... take an 800 sq. ft. pool. Let's say (hypothetically) it costs $80,000. Now ... add a waterfall. Ok ... how big is that waterfall going to be?? What structural considerations need to be made? How large are the boulders? Can they be hand carried? Or will they require heavy machinery to move them? Is it a natural fall? Or synthetic/cultured?? so this waterfall might cost $5,000 ... it might cost $30,000. There's just a lot to think about prior to coming up with any kind of pricing. Many people get hung up on "square footage" and think that everything is based on square footage. It's not. A fraction of the cost is determined by square footage - but there are a dozen other factors that are to be considered. Take that 800 sq. ft. lagoon. Let's say it's $80,000. Now ... how is your access?? Can heavy equipment get to your backyard??? What about your yard? is it flat? on a hill? If so ... will there need to be any site work necessary just to begin excavation??? Will a retaining wall be necessary??? So there are MANY little factors that contribute to the overall price Just realize that purchasing a pool is not like buying something off the shelf. Interesting note about the rocks. Here is a picture of ours: When we saw them being built, they were a lot bigger than we thought they'd be and worried about the same thing you mention since we have a lot of little ones in our pool. We debated about handholds. In retrospect, since our boulders were man-made, we would have had them build in some creative outcroppings that could work as hand-holds. Since we didn't, we now have a pool rope with some floats anchored at each end of the rocks that we can take in and out easily. we tend to leave it in because it doesn't look bad and the kids like playing with it. Just as a note, any children that NEED the rope should obviously be very closely watched anyways, but we feel better with the rope in too. Cleaning around them hasn't been a hassle at all, I just walk on them. Our cleaner connection is below them, which is a little inconvenient but not that big a deal. All in all, we love the rocks. I also agree that my wife made me cringe a few times when she she went out to bug the subs about something she didn't like, but it always worked out for the best. You'll always see what's going on faster than your builder unless he moves in with you.

Well they took there sweet time getting out to my house to look at the damage....a week to be exact! Every time I looked out there I got mad, just wanted to cut it all back but had to leave some of the damage so they could see it. I let them know that chlorine gas is no longer permitted on the property! And they agreed to pay for the cost of replacing everything. The manager told me to give him a call and let him know how much it will cost. I explained to him that I grew all these flowers and the gourd vine, and spanish flag by seed and that they are annuals. Also, that with the weather heating up now I will not replant annuals as they will most likely not survive. Anyhow, we'll see if they give me hard time when I call them to give them a number ($)
He told me that they also had another employee just kill someones prize geraniums by dumping salt into the flower bed, then he said "I'm learning alot of gardening tips by putting out the fires" Geez! Salt?!
