Free Form Granite as Wall Art? Or something else?

Now that we've completed a kitchen update and (almost) a bathroom reno, we have a wonderful piece of granite left over. Initially we were going to use most of it for the bathroom vanity top, but went with a concrete sink instead.

So that leaves us with the beautiful piece of granite (about 80" x 40"). We don't need any more tables! I was wondering about asking if the "river" that runs through it could be cut out artistically and then (somehow) mounted on a wall.

Any other ideas? Or should I just let it go and hope that someone else can use it (the fabricator can sell it as a remnant for another purpose)?

Could you use it for an outdoor bar? My gosh it's beautiful! You might also see if the granite yard can sell it for you if you can't think of anything to do with it.

That is a gorgeous piece of stone! I wish we were in your area because we'd find a place for it! That would make a beautiful bar, either indoors or out. Do you need a serving buffet or credenza? A cabinet maker could create a fabulous base, I'm sure.

I love the idea of a wall installation but I bet it would be all but impossible to cut it into an irregular, organic shape.

I went looking for images of those elements. Ribbed glass panels in cabinet doors is easy enough. Here's one in a bathroom vanity: Ribbed glass (or ''seeded'' glass) is also often found in period light fixtures: As for marquetry countertops, if you asked most kitchen cabinet makers for such, I imagine they would gape blankly at the gabbling woman. But there are plenty of companies doing stock and custom hardwood marquetry inlays using CNC laser cutters. Here's the thing - they are doing it in floors. Google ''hardwood floor inlay'' and see. Yes, many of the rosettes are infeasible for a 26'' counter, but look for the ''border'' designs - or create your own. Assemble a 26'' wide section of inlaid ''floor'' on a 3/4'' plywood substrate, encase it in Waterlox, and I do believe you'd have yourself a marquetry countertop. Another option - perhaps cheaper - is stenciling on hardwood, of which this is an example. And so is this What else? Beveled glass is readily available, as is chrome countertop edging, and any furniture or auto upholstery shop can cover a panel of 1/8'' plywood in soft butterscotch leather framed in silver studs (maybe not actual silver, but close enough). I don't know exactly what version of Art Deco you are headed for, or if you even like butterscotch, but the point is, you are not doing yet another white kitchen, you're doing something that isn't being done by the mainstream, so the ordinary kitchen sources are not making this stuff. Sure, there is cool Art Deco hardware around, but what passes for ''Art Deco'' kitchen cabinetry in the online catalogs is . . . disappointing. You are going to have to make it, or at least source it, yourself - and I think if you're comfortable outside the painted lines, you can. You'll find yourself hiring a floor guy to work on a countertop, hunting down the local hot rod upholstery shops, telling your cabinet maker to fit bathroom vanity faces to kitchen cabinet boxes - they'll still look at you like you're crazy, but you'll know you're not. I don't have a functioning camera right now to make an electronic photo file, but will remark that it is easiest inside a nice cabinet to use combinations of pex tubing and push to connect fittings such as Sharkbite brand (among many others) to avoid sweat soldering damage. All that is needed is a means to cut the pex to a clean flat end. Mistakes are easily remedied by using a different size piece of pex. Adapters exist to go from the pex to the fitting that dangling faucet hoses use. 3/8 poly line along with John Guest type push to connect fittings will be good for RO lines or such. Pex and poly are at their limit when used for pressurized water at boiling temperatures, so the hot water source in the house needs to be under some form of temperature control. A boiler type of water heater with potential for overshoot to 220 or so would be a risk in my view without a working moderator (required anyway by code). Some water chemistries tend to degrade the modulator so that needs to be kept in mind. My primary sink cabinet base includes garbage disposal and DWV plumbing, stand pipe for dishwasher hose, hot/cold feed for main faucet and to moderating valve for dishwasher (gets mix of hot and cold). Also there is the touch faucet control box, the fiber-optic garbage disposal control box, and quad electrical outlet. RO connection to both hot and cold sides of a pull-down faucet are present. Something I did in my guest bedroom while waiting for the perfect pieces of art was to get a photo calendar with pictures I like and buy some simple black frames. I had a set of four, looked pretty good. The one I had was Japanese watercolor art. Later, I bought two large beach watercolors. I love the beach and I found having beach pictures in the bedroom very relaxing! I like landscapes, but if you don't, then by all means don't. I had some landscapes in my bedroom, but moody ones. One was a cabin glowing with firelight covered by a huge amount of snow illuminated pink by a sunset. Just the perfect spot I would have liked to be and since the snow made it impossible to get in or out of the place, it just evoked peace and relaxation or me. To a Floridian it might have been a living nightmare, lol. Later it was a little homestead cabin on top of a hill, a woodcut. When I went full on beach in one room, I had the typical tropical desert island scene, which also says relax, no interruptions. Landscapes can be very abstract too, my friend's daughter does very abstract landscapes. I'm not trying to sell her stuff, just including a link because I think she does beautiful work and it's a good example of "out of the box" landscapes. I would love some kind of sculpture made to look like tree branches, but again, that's just me.

You can pick very similar paintings (like in a diptych you know? same subject same painter-different details), and put them together next to each other. I wouldn't separate them by anything in that case. But I wouldn't do two identical ones. They have to differ at least ever so slightly..for example photographs or artworks that are identical but printed in different colorways... Don't settle for anything that just goes and you're not too crazy about it. This feeling usually doesn't change:) Just increases, in my experience. Return the one you don't like that much, put the one you love in a different spot, and continue to look for something that you would love unconditionally over that sofa:) Cheap sources for art(original and prints)-E Bay, Etsy..you might be pleasantly surprised with choice and prices. Many artists there.. Also-Everything But The House. Bids start from one dollar there..of course if it's fine art it gets really expensive in the end, but some less known, nice, simpler works can be won for real cheap.

That would take a helluva wall to hold up that piece, although it would be kind of cool. How about a new fireplace hearth?

I would slide it under a bed, put a bench at the end of the bed to accommodate the extra length and wait. If you let it go0 or cut it up, in a couple of years you will wish you had it....either for a buffet top or a bar for a room you add on....or because....just because.
You will never again find a piece of stone that matches your kitchen counters.

Thanks for your ideas. Yes. It is a great stone. I just hate to set it free!

Caminnc: Hum, something outdoors. We do have a wood fired oven. Maybe we could create a pizza making station with this. Don't know how well it would survive NE winters -- though Vermont is the "granite state"! If we can't use it, the fabricator would be able to use it.

TreasureTheDay: We've did used another "left over" section to top a buffet in the dining area. It was DH's second furniture project and turned out very well. An outdoor bar/pizza space might be doable. Have to think about that.

Dedtired, you're quite right. I hadn't thought about what it would take to mount such a heavy piece on a wall. Duh!

Lindac, a very good point about keeping it "just in case." We did that with floor tile and were glad we did. We might not be able to get a 450 lb slab up the stairs, but we might be able to find a home in the garage.

We had to buy a slab of marble for our fireplace. I used more of it for the counter top in hubby's office where the printer and equipment sit. I still had more left over so I designed and the fabricator built a pedestal for me for a sculpture I had. I also have my sofa nestled between 2 bookcases so I had sliding shelves of marble built into them to use for drinks if you're sitting on the sofa.

AnnieDeighnaugh, I'm keeping your great idea of a stone desktop in mind for the future. I hate that my home office furniture gets scratched up by all of the equipment no matter how careful I try to be.
