How long does plaster really last?

Quick question - how long does plaster really last? I have all different pool builders telling me all different things, all to their advantage of course. So, unbiased, how long can one expect the plaster to last?

IMO 5-15 years. All depends on how good you are at keeping pool chemistry in line. See if you can get them to throw in some asbestos. Then it should last 25+

i heard asbestos can do that for you. How about other options instead of regular plaster. How long do/can they last? Thanks for the help.

Roberta, last fall my hens went through the same thing, it was a little embarrassing with the neighbors....much worse than a little crow from a rooster because it never seemed to quit! I also remember saying it really did sound like they were in pain, they were no doubt at that time. Mine have quieted down considerably since then but they still do cackle during the day just not to the same extreme. I would give them a couple of months since they will all start to lay at different times. It may also vary depending on the breed, some are noisier than others I think. When mine get too loud I just shut the windows in the coop, this muffles the noise considerably -Sheila

How long does vinyl siding last?

Thanks. Well, when we first started talking about building, DH was all happy about the idea of no more painting--we've been painting and painting and painting a 200 y.o. farmhouse for 22 years now. OK. Then I started reading about vinyl, brittleness, fading, hail, flapping in the wind, etc., and also about the pros of fiber cement siding--except, of course, that it will need painting at some point. What I'm now trying to figure out is, if one has to re-side the vinyl every 20 years or so anyway, it would still be cheaper (over the operating life) to have the fiber cement professionally repainted vs. re-siding the house? And I'm gathering that it would look, wear, and function better, too? But that equation might not work if vinyl is really going to last 30-plus years.... Any insights on that?

I bought a smeg double oven and I've had it on high temperature for about 1-2 hours each time to try and get rid of the toxic chemicals. I've done this about 5-6 times so far The second time I had all the windows doors opened but stayed in the room next to the kitchen for only about 5 minutes and the chemicals from the oven made me feel so sick. Even though the kitchen door was closed! It must have seeped through the gap! I had nausea and had to go to bed really early as I felt so sick. It's dreadful, I am so disappointed that we have to go through all this hassle with a new oven. I've just put a tray of water and lemons in both sections of the oven and put on high heat to try and help rid the smell and absorb the toxins Keep wiping around the oven and just having it on as much as possible before you cook. As there is something very dangerous about the chemicals they r using in the oven! Of all places! Such a good idea! Let's poison everyone! Keep pet birds or any pets out of the kitchen whilst you are de fuming as I read that pets have died because of this chemical smell. It needs to be stopped as I haven't been able to use my oven for weeks and actually feel scared to ever use it. Good luck with your new oven

Neem/Soap/Alcohol spray - how long does it last?

Alcohol should last as long as it is kept well capped. Diluted neem looses its effectiveness pretty quickly as far as its active ingredient (azadirachtin) is concerned. However, the oil part of neem should still be effective for a while. You will have really shake it well every time you use it. The oil tries separate from the water when left undisturbed. Oil is organic matter and so it is possible that a diluted version can start decomposing/fermenting. A smell test should let you know if it is OK to use. Pure insecticidal soap in water should remain effective. I do not know how long but a few months should be fine. I am not sure of household soaps since there are tons of other ingredients in there besides soap. In fact, one should avoid regular household soaps on plants anyway.

We had gunite at the pool at our old house. The pool was built in 1978 and we had it re-gunited(what a verb!) in 2002.

We are (still) in planning stages for a pool... expected to have a contract signed by now, but had to set-up landscaping separately and still are waiting for bids from that to include in contract.
Anyway, we did a lot of research on plasters... from what I have read and heard (PB's out there correct me), traditional plasters can have a lifespan as short as 5 years and as long as 10 - 15 years depending on chemical conditions.
PebbleTec finishes are one of the "other options" to regular plasters that you asked about. While PebbleTec only offers 5 year warranty on their finishes, you'll be hard pressed to find many folks who have ever re-plastered a PT pool. I am told that PebbleTec started in Australia about 25 years ago and there are many examples of pools done in the early days of the finish that still have not been re-plastered.
There are many, many competitors to PT and you would have to get advice from some of the professionals here to see if these are really about the same quality as PT. I know the warranties offered by many of these other pebble finishes are as good or better than PebbleTec.
There are also many other finishes that are plaster base with quartz added, etc. I really don't know about the durability of these compared to regular plaster, although I am sure they are at least as good in terms of durability and look really nice.
We are going with a pebble finish on ours (PebbleSheen from PebbleTec). I was concerned with the feel of the finish of these, but in fact, in my opinion, it is actually smoother than a traditional plaster finish, Plus, the ultimate "smoothness" of your plaster finish depends largely on the brushing that is done early in its install/curing process.
The fine pebble finishes (like PebbleSheen) feel about like the surface of a basketball. Brush you hand across traditional plaster and it feels much more "sandpaper-like" to me.
