Lost my last close friend.

My last close friend, Gracie passed away today. I have had 4 close friends in my life, and she was the last one. She had been in a care center for several months quite a ways from where I live, so I haven't been able to get there to see her, but called weekly and would send funny cards. She was a good friend, card playing, golfing and bowling buddy. I'll sure miss her. RIP, friend. Dottie

Dotmom, I'm so sorry to hear that. Loosing such a close friend is like loosing a loving family member. I'm happy to hear you have so many great memories of your friendship, though, so you can remember her through all the laughs and fun you had together. Those memories can always bring on a smile when you're feeling blue.

Nothing goes like you plan. Had everything ready. I forgot to ask George how he moistens the peat/vermiculite mixture so I used the garden hose sray in the cups before I stuck the cuttings in. It got too soggy. I tried to drain and squeeze out as much as I could. Then I look at the cuttings and don't know how to prepare them right, made another slanted cut under water as best I could, cut the flower heads off as best I could (some of these had three flower heads), some were very healthy but some had some brown stuff on them (none had mold) so I pulled those leaves off but not all of them, shook the water off, dredged in powdered hormone, stuck a pen in the mix, felt I had to pull some of the bottom leaves off or I couldn't poke them deep enough, stuck the cutting in that, pressed as snugly as I could, then buried them as deep as I could in the ground. I figured burying the cups in the ground might keep them cooler if it gets hot again, but then it was frustrating trying to get the pepsi bottles over them without touching the leaves and disburbing the cuttings more and getting the leaves tucked up in there. Some of the leaves are touching the sides, I guess that can't be helped. Finally I put up an old window screen to filter out some of the sun that will get through on the east side, most is blocked now by trees, but a little gets through in the morning. The north side would get some of the morning sun anyway and is not a good place right now, ground packed from cement work that was done, too hard to dig for me. I toyed with the idea of stapling translucent plastic to the screen but just ran out of patience. Once the sun hits the south, they should be ok in the natural light that is left. I was afraid the plastic would block too much light and I would have to move the screen every noon. I put the seventh one, the only one that didn't have a spent flower head, looks very healthy, in the cup, in a gallon baggie, blew some air in, sealed it, and set it on the table by my north window, put curtains to block the sun from the east window very close by. It made me nervous, and all I can do is hope for the best. You look at those cuttings and must have to have some special knowhow to know what to do with each one because each one is different. Then what to do with the rooting hormone with all the warnings about not getting it on your skin, wear rubber gloves, I didn't, so I sealed that up in a plastic container and will use it again because I don't like to waste it. I was thinking as I was struggling with all this and back was hurting, legs stiff, why am I doing this? Why not just buy my roses? Two more sets to go, one tomorrow and one the next day, I hope. Have to go to the grocery store and buy back some bottles. Maybe in time I'll gain confidence and more of a knack with it. It is not easy for me, and it is messy.

You say he has trouble with dexterity and getting the wallet back into his pocket then losing it. So maybe the answer is not to get a different wallet, but to not carry the wallet a pocket. A lot of older people, both men and women, (and lots of not so old persons too) carry their stuff around in a belted pouch. Sometimes these are called 'fanny packs' but they can be worn in front. They are big enough to not require a lot of dexterity to stuff things into it. Using a biker wallet with a chain connecting to the inside of the pouch would help even more. I don't think one of these fanny packs would draw attention to suspicions of "carrying a lot of money around" as they are very popular with lots of people. A lot of elderly use them because they have to carry so many medications around. If your dad is 'old school' he may not take to the idea of using something he views as a purse but it's worth suggesting it to him.

Viola Sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my dad 10 months ago. He was 68 and I was 34. I think the same way that you are. It will be hard to go through life for the next 30-40 years without dad. My dad helped me out with watching my kids while I worked. He was such a great dad. I miss him horribly. Everything you are feeling is normal. It doesnt seem fair and at times the sorrow cuts like a knife deep inside my heart. Then I get so mad that he died. I guess all these feelings are normal. Your life will never be the same again, something just changes when you lose someone you love. When I lost my dad I felt so alone and realized wow its really time to grow up now because when mom and dad are still here, a part of you stays there little girl. There is no easy answer. Just try to keep yourself busy and cry when you need to. Talking to other people who are going through similiar thing helps me. I dont like going around people who still have there parents. I guess I am jealous, not sure,. In the end we will be reunited again. My prayers are coming your way. Keep posting

Hello all... thanks for all the kind words. I am still trying to struggle through the day. Somedays I am ok, but others not that great. It was her birthday on October 20th. She would have been 64 or "39" as she would have said. We went to the park and fed the ducks... she always liked to do that. I also brought daisys and popped the tops off and placed them in the water. I miss the way that I would call her and she would be willing to go with me on what ever adventure I wanted to go on that day. She was always there for me. I know I am lucky to have a person like that and that it was my Mom, but it hurts no less. I am trying to build a new "normal". It is rough though because everything I do reminds me of her. I started to move around furniture in our house and I was thinking that everything I touched we bought together. She was a great decorator and I have no decorating sense at all. I just wonder when the feeling that I am completly lost and alone will go away. The holidays are coming and I hate it. I think we are going to plan a vacation at Christmas so I don't have to think about it. I don't know about Thanksgiving. Mom used to make the best mashed potatoes. This is so freaking hard. I think I am going to check into counseling again. It is so hard because I put on a strong face when I am out, but crumble when I get to my car or at home. I talk to my husband, but I don't think he really understands. What do you all do for the holidays?? Any ideas on how to get through them?

My heart breaks for you Dottie. I just don't know what I will do if something happens to my best buddy. I just cannot manage life without her voice sometimes.

I'm so sorry, Dottie! For 25 years, there were six of us who were close friends (the type that always walked in when the rest of the world walked out and could be counted on for whatever might be needed any time of the day or night). I lost the first one in 1999 and it hurt so much. Then a few years later, the second one, the next year, the third one and last year, two within a few months of each other. Now I feel like I'm in a ship without an anchor. I hope you can find comfort in memories of all the good times you shared with your friend. Bettye/AZ

Greetings, Dottie ... from far-off Ontario,

It really leaves a hole in one's heart to lose one of one's best friends. When it gets down to the last one, the loss is felt even more strongly ... plus ... one wonders just when the guillotine is going to crunch for one's self!

Careful, though ... some of us have the suspicion that we may have been, " ... out to lunch ..." ... for quite a while (possibly having been accused of such a time or two)!

It would be great if we could share lunch together ...

... I remember when Dances and I carried the pack of goodies from a number of KT folks to cherryfizz after her house renovation.

Also visiting with Caroline and Wes while on my trip to Saskatchewan a couple of years ago ...

... maybe we can get together on my next trip out there.

Maybe you can develop one of your other friends into a sense of greater fellowship.

Awww...Dottie, I am so sorry. My mom puts it this way, "Sometimes it's awful being the last chicken called in to roost!" She had four sisters and five brothers and her SISTERS were her best friends. Now she's the only one left of ten.

I've lost two of my closest friends in the last few years and I'm 60. I watched my DMIL go through that and it has to be so hard. Sometimes I think about one particular friend and it makes me so sad to think about going through the rest of my life without her.

Please try not to feel so lonely. You have us and I know you have wonderful memories of all the years you spent with your friends.

As my mom says, "I can still see their faces and hear them laugh."

Dottie, my deepest condolences to you! It's so sad to lose close friends. I'm thinking of you. I hope you take comfort in the memories of all the good times and how you enriched your good friend's life by being her friend.
