Decorate? No Decorate?

As many of you know, George and I will be celebrating our 1st/35th anniversary in October.

Currently all that is planned is candles on the table supplied by the hotel.

We had a decorator for our 25th and she did a great job. We're rather undecided now, so thought I'd ask my KT friends what they think.

Since it's a combo celebration (1st - paper/35th coral or modern jade) I'm thinking it would be hard to come up with decorations to celebrate the occasion(s). Balloons have been suggested, but not wild about that idea.

Suggestions/thoughts appreciated!

Tissue paper flowers made in coral and Jade could be very pretty.

Napkins, banners, signs, - all can be paper but use the colours of coral and jade. (and the candles in those colours if possible.)

Flowers in the two colours with lots of greenery to celebrate the jade and the longevity of your time together. The carnation is the flower for first anniversary and coupled with lots of greenery would look really nice. The great thing about carnations is that they last a long time.

Coral is the more traditional colour while jade is more modern. Whichever one you and your partner are - pick that one as the main colour and the other as the accent colour.

Are you doing stand-up cocktails or sit-down buffet/dinner for the celebration.

I cant help you find a decorator but people on here can help you decorate for free... just post a picture of a room and let us know what you will be keeping or what you want to get new. Let us get some idea of your style or colors and many here will have some ideas to offer you. Good luck,it will be fun! Its like getting 10 decorators instead of paying for 1. Some of us here are professional decorators (not me) and some just like to decorate for fun.( like a hobby). A few of us are "addicted" but its all in good fun! PLease PLease! ... opps... am I begging? :)

It's worth the money to buy good, large amaryllis bulbs. They are far more likely to re-bloom. My two favorite are Cherry Nymph and White Nymph. They are double blossoms, multiple ones per stem and multiple stems. I pay about $18 for one bulb and it will rebloom for several years if treated properly. It's a lot of bag for the buck.

You don't need to fill each nook and cranny. Negative space theory says the eyes need to rest sometimes. For the large wall, consider a local artist or art gallery. Also, some colleges have their own art galleries. If you don't get anywhere there, I've gotten some beautiful prints from art.com. They have a wide selection. I just buy the print from art.com and then I get it framed locally with plexiglass (safer and lighter than glass, and thus easier to hang). You don't have to be in a hurry to fill the walls. Wall decor is highly personal and each person has their own taste. Wall decor can even be a conversation starter! Besides framed prints, you can also get 3-D pieces such as an iron piece, tapestry, or a plate grouping.

The reason I’m not crazy about navy is, that by doing gray on bed frame, you’re in a murkier palette— or softer— compared to crisp navy. So other colors that have that same softness or grayed value will look better. So if blues , then ones that are not as crisp and cool. Unless you do more careful color palette coordination, which is possible but in my experience is hard for a lot of people. Something like using a print fabric or a range of colors In artwork. But just random solids, not so much.

I think you can't go wrong with arrangements of fresh flowers. The Hotel might have some color choices for table linens. Simple, elegant.

If you do an image search on "paper flowers wedding," you will find some beautiful images. You could do centerpieces for the table(s) of paper flowers in coral and add coral cloth napkins.

If you were doing a stand-up cocktail party, I could imagine abstract white paper sculptures made to resemble different kinds of ocean coral as centerpieces and decor, blue lighting under semi-sheer tablecloths and a menu centered around seafood...a whole different take on coral and paper.

A flower bouquet and a carved piece of jade for your home? 35 is a once in a life time gift to each other.

We just celebrated our 35th anniversary, but didn't do anything special.....every day is special!

Note: We over nighted in Taiwan once & I purchased a jade bracelet & carved jade pendant.

IF you could find a coral tissue paper, it would look pretty to do something with it to sprinkle down the center of the tables. If you rent the table linens, they ought to have a coral color for napkins. Maybe some coral candles here and there.

Someone told me a pretty but inexpensive table decoration, especially for long tables. Buy lots of fern leaves from the floral supply, then place them lengthwise down the middle of the table. On that you could sprinkle coral petals (silk ones would be easy) and place a candle every so many feet. With colored napkins, that would be colorful enough.

Lots of good suggestions already. Was only going to add that if you want the height, and don't want balloons, maybe you can use mini-lights with paper lanterns?

In October mums would be widely available around here, and you could probably get them in a coral color.

I think that keeping it simple with crisp white linens and fresh flowers always looks elegant. You can start with that and add candles where you think you want them. I like the idea of the large fern fronds to create some contrast between the linens and the center pieces. How exciting for you both and congrats!

Thanks all for the suggestions. Shortly after posting this I found the bill from the person who helped us with the 25th! Talk about surprised, was sure I had thrown it out.

blfenton we're having a cocktail hour first, the a buffet with dancing after that. I like your idea of one color accent as the main one with another secondary.

I like to keep things simple, but at the same time make it (to quote George) festive.

Keep those suggestions coming.

You might get some inspiration from this Pinterest page! I really like the coral flowers in the old Mason jars......is that too casual for your event??

Take a look at Etsy for inexpensive paper confetti in floral and other shapes... they have banners, paper flowers and all sorts of things!
