one of my first quilts

I made this quilt when I first started quilting. I made it using a muslin foundation-just kept adding pieces and trimmed the blocks all the same size when I finished them. I used all kinds of fabric in it. I used the different stitches on my sewing machine to quilt it along the seams and scrap-pieced the binding.A couple of places are getting frayed edges. There were a few places where I made mistakes-didn't get little areas of muslin covered.I 'darned' our initials on them using the sewing machine-a'G','R' and'J'-can you see them? This quilt has been washed umpteen times over the years but hasn't faded much and is still one of my favorite quilts.

Geraldine, Great job!!!!! I'm making blocks using this method....I'm calling them Crazy Crumb Blocks. I don't have near enough for a quilt yet as I just do a few a week....I really should make more as the scraps are starting to take over!

I love your quilt. I just love the scrappy look and I like the string pieced quilt.There were a couple favorite blocks as one looks like a house and the other like windows in the house. I will let the rest of you spy for them. thanks for sharing.

Welcome to the quilt addiction...I hope you find it as fun as the rest of us! I like your modern quilt and I'm impressed this is the first item you have ever sewed...WOW! You mentioned you are trying to learn your machine...not sure what machine you have, but a google search with your machine brand and your area should turn up a dealer. Dealers normally have classes so you can learn about all the fun stuff you can do with your machine. Also...let me invite you to consider the quilt block lotto...it's a great way to learn new blocks. First, it's optional to participate each month, so no pressure there. Every month Toolgranny will post a block design, provide the colors for block, you make 1, 2 or more, up to you; the blocks get mailed to me (littlehelen) by month end; at month end a random winner is pulled and the winner is the lucky receipent of all of the blocks submitted. I mail these off to the winner-almost an instant quilt. You can win 6, 12 blocks or 30 blocks...never know as it depends on the participation for that month ...but it's fun and I've found it to be a good method to practice techniques for new blocks. Do a search on this site for Lotto and you can read about the process, see pics of what has been sent in etc. sorry...did mean to do a sales pitch...but it is enjoyable! Great first quilt!!! Look on your batting wrapping and it will give suggestions as to how close (or far apart) the quilting should be. The one I am using now suggests 2". I am just learning to machine quilt (about 5 years now lol) and I love anything that doesn't have to be marked. With SITD it is sometimes not easy to stay in the 'ditch', but when the quilt is washed it doesn't show as much. The scrappy Irish Chain I am making for my sister is going to be mostly quilted on the diagonal. You can always mix it up and do different quilting designs. Have Fun! Rosa

A zillion years ago when I learned to quilt I took a class where we piece by hand a queen size sampler quilt. As I wss lucky enough to get mine done before the class ended we learned to baste my quilt by hand on post and ladder back chairs. I quilted it by hand. The only thing I used the sewing machine for was the seam that connected the backing pieces. I liked the process but it was slow. I have gone the route of quilting as you go (by hand) amd I have a floor frame that I have hand quilted a king size and queen size quilt. But that takes up so much room that I have done the rest of my hand quilting with a lap frame. Now I am trying to machine quilt. I have done small things with out too much problem but never free motion except for stippling. I find it a real challange to manipulate all that fabric. I sympathize with all of you who admit to the need for patience. The new Keepsake cataloge came today and I noticed they have Skillbuilder of Machine Quilters; It consists of 2 panels 44x35 printed with a lot of machine quilting designs with directional guides. Has a companion book by Renea Allen. I am giving it some consideration as a way to learn more. Has anyone tried it? Jayne

Sounds like you made the right decisions about quilting directions; I'm sure it was the flannel that made the fabric pull a little. It's not as easy to work with as regular quilting cottons, no matter how much experience you have. Like others have said, I'm sure it's lovely and soft and will be much appreciated! Don't worry about your points matching up. That comes with practice. I have found that matching points are much more important to the person who did the sewing than they are to the person using the quilt! If you do try the basting spray, heed the advice to use it lightly! I have only used it once and my quilt ended up being a wrinkly mess but others here have been very successful with it. It was one of my first quilts and although I don't remember exactly how I used it, I'm guessing I just applied way too much. Kate

It's really pretty and I love the green in that border. Good for you, finding a way to deal with the spots where the muslin would have showed. A traditional Japanese house carpenter once told us that a really good carpenter knows how to cover up his mistakes cleverly, and that holds true for other things, too.

It's really quite nice, I especially enjoy the border color, one of my favorites & unusual for a border, especially in that style (I think). Works very well & the 'monogramming'' is a clever fix indeed.

I'm new to making bed quilts or washable quilts (rather than wall hangings which I've tended not to wash). It's encouraging to me to hear you find it's held up well to many washings. I hope to be so lucky!

Geraldine you make the most interesting quilts and thank you for sharing. I really love string quilts and make them for my charity projects. I love looking at the many fabrics in string quilts, it is mesmerizing. Here is how I gather my scraps for string quilting: I have a plastic gift bag that sits near my sewing table. When I get a project cut out the smaller leftovers get TOSSED in the bag. When the project is completely done then I strip the scraps. It is amazing how quickly I gather strips to sew. I like to sew these on my featherweight when there is some special sports I want to watch. I don't have to worry about accuracy or 1/4" seams.
