I would absolutely expect it to be taken out redone. You paid full price and the installer made the mistake. They should fix it - even if it means using a new slab - at their cost! Don't 'ask', tell them (in a nice manner, but matter of factly) that it isn't acceptable and you expect a replacement. A refund or credit won't be as nice in 3 years when you're still looking at the mistake!

I've learned two things during my kitchen remodel, and they contradict each other:

First, if something is really driving me crazy, I should insist on getting it fixed. If it would take one or two day's work to fix something, it is worth it to insist.

Second, some things that I hate at first, either because they are flawed or just not what I expected, and want to fix immediately, over time become barely noticeable to me, or, in some cases, become something that I love.

That being said, I would say that you should meet with fabricator, and have him explain what would be involved in fixing it. It probably isn't true that it can't be fixed, it is probably just a PITA to do it, and there is probably some risk of breaking the slab. Not your problem. If it turns out to be a huge deal to fix it, or a huge risk of breaking the slab, then live with it for a while, and see if it really is so noticeable to you over time, and it it still bugs you.

I took similar steps on some things in my kitchen, and in some cases made them re-do the work, and in some cases, lived with it, and over time, forgot about it.

When we were planning our kitchen our KD emphasized many times how important it was, in his opinion, to have the granite overhang uniform throughout the kitchen. He spec'd 1-1/2" from the edge of the cabinet box. With 3/4" doors and end panels this means 3/4" of stone extends further than the doors and will mostly overhang the cabinet pulls and knobs also since I think our hardware has a 1-1/4" projection. Hope this makes sense. Our kitchen granite installation was today and the granite installers took a lot of time, probably at least a half hour, making sure that the overhang was uniform. They placed the granite and measured, repositioned and measured at least 4 times until they were sure they had it right. If your granite isn't right I think it means they didn't take the proper care to get it right. If it bothers you, I think you have a right to complain about the installation. I don't know what will have to be done to make it right but they are professionals I think they should give you options rather than expecting you to tell them how to fix it. A credit doesn't begin to address the problem since it was spec'd to 1-1/2" throughout.

the customer is always right and it sure looks like they weren't accurately measuring to maintain the amount of overhang throughout. Stick by your guns.

Thanks so much for your responses. Our KD told us she doesn't want them to touch the granite at this point because she's afraid they will mess up the seams and it will end up looking worse. I think she also told the fabricator she doesn't want them messing with it.

I did see the installers measuring at various times. They had been sort of pushing and pulling the three pieces involved to get them to fit right and this was the last piece to be put in place and seamed. The overhang on the first piece is not quite right either but not nearly as noticeable.

Unfortunately, the side with the too-small overhang is right along the main path through our house, so I pass it many times per day. Sigh... I also get to walk by my new Monogram oven that has the odd- colored control panel (another thread). I guess I will wait to see what the fabricator has to say and go from there.

Honestly, even though technically it is not correct I don't think it would bother me. It is off by itself on one side of a bank of cabinets.
