new deck around above ground pool

I've been looking at alot of postings about treatments for decks, there is lots of great information in here. My question is. We moved to a house that has an above ground pool, but it had no security around it. We had a deck built around half of the pool, with gates and railing. The contractor used pressure treated wood. What is my best direction to go as far as treatment of the wood. I have heard linseed oil, we like the golden oak kind of color, maybe alittle darker. I know the water is going to hard on the wood and also the sun is killer. How long do we wait to treat. We live around the Nashville, TN area. Thanks for your time.

Thanks for the reply John. Any input on which stain or treatment to use. Should it be sprayed on or brushed?

I've thought about this all week and surfed the internet and this is what I have come up with: In the corner by the deck I'm going to put in a "pond in a box" -a wooden planter style pond. Then I'm going to lay down pebbles along the path with 16"x16" paver stones every 16" or so. Along the fence I will put an edger. In the far corner since it would be so much rock to fill in that space - I'm going to put in a corner garden with some some loving perennials. Wish me luck! I'll try to post pics along the way...I've now got no dig plastic edging put around the pool and landscape fabric down. I now have to find the rock without breaking the bank! I'm curious where other people buy rock for landscaping projects? I've looked at home depot but it seems rather dear to pay $4.00 a bag for rock (I'll need over 30 bags) but I know I can't get anything delivered for that price. Is there anywhere else to buy rock (other than Lowes-their prices are the same)???

Thanks, ReadySeal looks like a good product. The more I look today the more I like Tigerwood (as our interior floors are all tigerwood) or Ipe. However, I'm concerned on the cost on these. Each thing I look at doing I keep deciding to make it better and end up raising the cost of everything! I need to get a more firm design so I can more accurately compare pricing. I spoke with our building code man yesterday and he says I need to put self closing gates on any stairs too. Darn it, I was hoping to have wide stairs as I dislike railings. So many different things to keep in mind and my kids keep begging to be able to set up the pool!!!

TWP 116, dont spray it this stuff will stain anything, we use a paint pad on a pole and brush the rails. John

My questions are very similar to garybenner's. We just installed a new deck around our above ground pool. I have 2 questions...
1. What is TWP 116?
2. We like to color of the Western Red Cedar we used so would just like to use a waterproofing agent if that is possible, and if so, what is recommended?
We live in Southern Oregon, where it can be very dry and hot in the summer (100+) and rainy and wet in the winter.
Any help or suggestions would be wonderful.

google up twp, I use the 116 for a brown/red look. I am thinking I will be saying this forever so one more time>>> no clear or natural finish has any UV protection so if you use it your project will go gray

The Western Red Cedar Lumber Asscoaition (WRCLA) recommends you not use a clear sealer for the reason John mentioned above. You will not get any UV protection and the deck will turn gray. One alternative is to figure out how much sealer you will need for your deck and then purchase a semi-transparent sealer half of it in a color that compliments your wood and half in a clear. Mix the two together. Below is a photo of TWP cedartone 101 done by a colleague.

Gary, if you use linseed oil outside your deck will be eaten alive by mold and it will turn black. New pressure treated lumber will not take sealer evenly unless it ages. But, letting PT wood sit unprotected is going to cause problems with warping. Coat it now but know that by next spring you will probably need to do it again.

The Man that finally figures out a way to make a clear outdoor finish with uv is going to make a pile of moneyloto,but until then twp is the best bet going. J

I concur with Hyatt, there is no product that will work on
decks around a pool without reapplying EVERY year. For me
it is too much work to do. A combination of wet-dry, wet-dry, direct sunlight and harsh winter season (South Ontario) is a losing battle. I should have went with a concrete deck to save alot of grief.
