Need Urgent Help - Pool Question.

Quick question for all you experts on this site. I have a company working on my pool. As part of getting access to the site for the pool to bring in their equipment, they have dug up/broken my irrigation system, my dog fence and underground cable line. When I asked them to fix this they say that underground lines are not their responsibility. Is this correct? Appreciate your thoughts on this ASAP as I have a call with them to resolve this afternoon. Thanks

Wow, I would be thinking about getting a different company if they trashed all of that stuff and then said "tough"

Usually it is in the contract, and usually they don't include fixing sprinklers. If the cable line was marked by the utility company, as it should have been, it is usually their problem. Cable company will come fix, and bill the party who did it. My guess is Dog Fence is like sprinkler, and not covered.

Read the contract before your call. Should be spelled out.

Good suggestion Pecan - but I tried it early on! And they can only exempt the most severely-disabled kids. For kids whose disabilities are more moderate, there's a 'TAKS-M' modified test. That test covers grade-level material but in a modified format. He just took the test last week and said it was 'easy' -- which unfortunately, could mean anything! However, if the reading TAKS-M is any indication, the test probably WAS easy. But we will see... What I was thinking is that since he's already taken the standardized test, how about we change gears RIGHT NOW to go back and cover 3rd grade in the remaining one month? I know it's not much -- but to my way of thinking, he can either learn multiplication and division now, skipping adding and subtracting fractions with mixed denominators (how's he supposed to learn that anyway without multiplication and division?) Or he can continue to 'skip' multiplication and division. Either way, there's a 'hole' in his education -- But which is the better topic to skip? Incidentally, I also asked them to teach him during summer school and got NOWHERE.

Although I cannot completely visuallize the situation, I do not see why the carpenters cannot be a little more creative in dealing with the higher ceiling height. A pocket door typically adds no more than 4 inches to a regular wall (interior residenital walls are usually about 4.5 inches in typical current construction). The framers usually have to frame a header over the pocket door that connects the top of the pocket door kit to the ceiling. With an 8-foot ceiling, this is about a foot or so. In your case, they could just frame a larger header to reach up to 10 feet instead on 8 ft. It is more labor, but not very much, perhaps 1/2 to 1 hour for two carpenters. Ask them to be a little more creative. They are taking the easy way out. Also, you may call the pocket door kit manufacturer for advice I think one brand is Johnson (?)

I don't think it is a problem. I think your eye travels into the room more readily than to the threshold. That being said, I know nothing about slate (except that I like it, especially w/ your brick), but 1+ inches seems like a decent size piece of tile. Is the concern because it is on the edge of the stairs? If it really bothers you, could you shift farther right, not centering three tiles, but increasing the visible piece presently at the left of your doorway to show a bit more? Could that eliminate your "finger"? Again, I really don't think it is a problem.

Do the drywall forms used for the gunite stage need to be removed before decking or is it okay to backfill and leave them in place? I would think it should all be taken out but have heard that it gets buried?

Like tfons said, it should be stated in your contract and they should have informed you when you were signing the contract that these items were excluded. Our PB told us that the sprinkler lines would more than likely be broken and they offered to repair at an extra lump-sum cost (but the salesman stated we'd probably be better off cost-wise using our guy). We elected to use our own guy. They did break a couple of lines, but it still was 20% of the cost to use our guy as what the PB quoted us. They also broke the cable. I had the cable company come out and install a screw-lock connection on the cable and just lay the cable on top of the ground where the construction traffic was. Each day when I left for work I would disconnect it and roll it to the side, then reconnect it when I got home. At the end of the project I sealed the connection water-tight and buried the line (did that part myself because the cable company wanted to charge us to re-lay the cable all the way to the back of the house!)

Can you just cut out the decking along the part of the deck that has the problem, and insert a drain and cover. It may not be the look you want, but better than what you have. They also come in all sizes and colors.

Most pool contracts have a clause that the PB is not responsible for what they dig up. The claim is that they have no idea what is buried in your yard. True, for the most part. Common sense will tell you there is a sprinkler but they put this in as a "just in case". I saw a PB dig up a sprinkler system. The workers finished up and left the site. The timer came on and flooded the hole out. Guess who was responsible for paying for the extra work to clean that up? The homeowner. Always be careful what you sign.
