Screen Porch Floor
Comments (0)I'd like some experts' assessment of this technique. I'm about to build a 14 X 26 screen porch, which will be raised about 20" from the ground. We get pretty good winds, so it will definately get wet. There's no way to get a dump truck or cement truck back there, and a pumper is prohibitively expensive, so I have to find another way to raise the floor. My idea is this: 1. Build block foundation wall to the correct height. Seal dirt floor with plastic. 2. Install pressure-treated lumber joists, sized for higher than normal deadload, normal live load, plus potential hot tub weight, max 1/720 deflection. 3. Install 3/4" treated plywood, nailers under seams. 4. Apply 30# sticky tar paper, the type used to protect roofs from ice-dams ("Weatherlok", etc). 5. Apply 1/2" cement board (Durock) with glue & screws. Control joint every 15'. 6. Tape joints & seal w/thinset. 7. Tile. I talked to the Durock folks several months ago, and came up with this system based on their recommendations. But I've never seen or heard from anyone who's done it this way. I've applied for a building permit, so I need to settle this pretty soon! Any inputs will be appreciated....See MoreScreened Porch Floor...need ideas please.
Comments (6)This is our third house with a screened in porch. Maine-Bugs. Could not live without one. We left wood planks on one floor.(our cabin in the mts.)The second had wood planks and we used indoor/outdoor carpet. The home we live in now is a cement slab. Because it is Maine we had to use a certain type tile. We looked at some that looked like slate. Then we saw real slate at HD for soooo cheep. It is absolutely beautiful. We used 16x16" tiles and my DH laid them at an angle. It has multi faded colors like greenish, grayish, rustish, maroonish. Typical slate just not a solid color....See MoreFloor options for screened porch

Comments (24)Well, I did not know that Hardie plank could be used. So that's an option! Or there is a composite. Both mentioned above. In our previous home, we used beaded board 4 x 8 sheets. Did the same on the home before that. One was painted, one was stained. Used 1 x 2's to cover seams. The problem is finding enough of any material!...See Morecoffeehaus
