Pool Rules? For your own kids & their friends?

This will be our first year with a pool in a town with no public pool, no swim club pool, no country club pool. We are just about to become the most popular people that we know!

I have a 13 year old and an 11 year old, and before swim season really hits, I need to develop a set of pool rules. At this time I won't let either of them on the pool deck unless someone else is outside with them (right after we filled the pool the 11 year old took a header into the water trying to rescue a bug - she was fine, but it was an eye opener).

So what are your rules for your own kids? Do you let them in the water without an actual adult outside? Only in the shallow end? Never in the pool without an adult poolside? I can see out to the pool easily from inside the house, but I am not sure about letting them outside in the water alone even though I am comfy with both of their swim skills.

And, the bigger question - how do you handle their friends? Obviously I would never let other kids in the pool unless I was sitting at the pool. But what are your rules for friends swimming? Note that OKs it from parents? Do you make the parents come over and watch the kids?

And, the best one, how do you handle the neighbor kids just showing up with towels in hand (or maybe just suits on)? This is our first time living in a neighborhood with kids, and several kids here go to school with my kids, but are not my kids friends. People here know that this house has a pool (first thing I did was privacy fence it), and several times already I have had random kids come up to me in the front lawn and ask what days they can swim. Kids who I have never met.

I have had several adult acquaintances who have already asked when we are going to start hosting pool parties, so I know that word has spread. I am guessing if I have one big party maybe everyone will have been over and will have been in the pool and then I can be done with the question? Or does it just lead to "when is your next party"?

When we built our pool it was mainly because of our grandchildren. Upfront, I shared that I would not be a pool 'baby sitter'. If my nieces and nephew's children wanted to come one of the parents have to bring them and stay with them.....they are free to use the pool anytime that way. As the children have gotten older age 12, they think the kids are old enough to come by themselves but I have cont. to say an adult must be with them.
I would not open up the pool to people I do not even know. They would have to be friends with my family and come with that family member. I feel if you open it up to all, you will never have any peace.
Other rules I have.....no horse-play, no running around the pool, no ducking others, no jumping onto a float. Clean up after yourself! (These are my rules. When I am not here, if the parents allow their children to do any of above then the responsibility is theirs. They know my rules.) If I find they are allowing them to jump onto a float and I see it I correct that immediately....to much danger of hitting head on cement side I think.)
Start out like you can hold out! Easier to relax rules than to tighten them.

Thank you! I figure it will be easier to be a little too strict at the beginning and lower my rules a bit - if I start them too low I will never get it fixed.

Wow Silverkelt! It's like you're clearing the land again to plant your daylily seedlings. I say go for the farm -but not a working one. That's what I have and I still have no idea where my seedlings are all going to go! The horse pasture is looking real good right now if I could just get someone to fence off a bit for me and plough it up. I moved one strawberry patch out of the garden last year and I think the raspberries are going to go somewhere else this year. But that's easy compared to cutting down trees, removing stumps etc.! FallDownGoBump... I hear ya... Loud and clear... Sounds as if we're both in the same boat... Hubby has 3 sisters and 2 brothers left and not one of them even bothered to send a card or call on his birthday, let alone any other time. Even if I did ask for help not one of them would... But the real kicker is that hubby has helped EVERYONE in his family and everyone has screwed him in some way... Six of his nine siblings and his father has lived with us at one time or another... When we first married we took in his father and youngest sister with the stipulation that 4 of the other brothers and sisters chip in a lousy $7. a week... The first week we got $21. the next week we got $14. then not another cent or even a crust of bread... I could go on for hours about them but I won't... It only upsets me more... My story: Three years ago hubby broke his hip and two days after the surgery they sent him home with me with no additional help... Three days after that something happened and he didn't know who he was, where he was or who I was... After a two week stay in the hospital, so they could perform every test known to man, they told me he had 2 strokes and a little stiff from the partial hip replacement but otherwise he was in good health and they sent him to a rehab facility ( nursing home )... BTW, while he was there, recovering, his youngest sister got it in her head that since the nursing home offered hospice services that was all they did and turned around and told hubby that's why he was there! Sorry for getting off on another rant... Anyway, after two months the rehab facility sent him home... For about a month and a half the visiting nurse and a physical therapist came over twice a week... By then I had to find a doctor because hubby's meds were running out. After reviewing all his medical records the doctor says hubby had SEVERAL strokes and a heart attack!!!! Ok, sorry, that's yet another rant... Right now I have a 67 year old hubby who moves as if he's 100 and, at times, has the brain of a 2 year old... Hugs, Rita

You're so right, TreKaren. I'm paranoid about other peoples' kids and I don't even have any of my own yet. Your post reminded me of the time I was leaving Walmart through the exit by the board where they post all the missing children's photos. One little girl noticed it and asked her mother, who impatiently yanked her along, if all those kids were taken from Walmart. Her mother said no and hurried on. People don't even stop to think. I can remember being scared when I was young because Adam Walsh had just been kidnapped, and this was in the early 80's even. How awful.

Fun, did you have more than one living space growing up? We had a formal living room and a family room so the family room is where our toys were kept. However, we didn't have nearly the same amount of toys as kids do nowadays! The way our family room was laid out, there was a corner where all the toys were kept. I shared an average size room with my sister, so we didn't have much room for playing in there. I'm sure we did a bit but for the most part, we were in the family room when we were young or outside. I also can't imagine having kids' toys in every room. That would drive me nuts! Most of the houses around here have basements or more than one living area so the basements store the bulk of the toys and then the family room, which is typically open to or next to the kitchen is where the main floor toys are stashed. Having four kids has relaxed my anal tendencies but I still go a little nuts with crap laying around. The peninsula in my kitchen becomes the drop zone but I can't stand having that clutter. And dh is the worst b/c he will leave his stuff there and never come back for it but then get annoyed if I move it or ask him to. He's used to clutter from his childhood. I used to have complete order in the house b/f I went to bed, but now I'm so exhausted by then that I have slacked off a bit and then get all stressed when I come downstairs the next morning to clutter and have to clean up b/f I can function. I'm like that with cooking too - I can't start cooking unless the counters are clear, no dirty dishes out, etc. DH looks at me like I have two heads. Am I the only weird one like that? Oops, sorry, I have a habit off going off on a tangent!

I have the same rules as memama. Also, no shooting water guns in faces. Some of those 'blasters' are powerful and I think could do some damage if forcefully sprayed in an eye.

I hang a green bandana on my fence when the pool is open to the neighborhood kids. If the bandana isn't there, don't come over. LOL But yeah, no strangers allowed. Ever.

I relaxed the rule about the kids having to bring a parent with them because for the most part, I don't mind sitting out there and I like to read, surf the web or talk on the phone and I don't want to entertain a parent.

Also, I got a whistle. Kids get loud a lot. I spent the first summer killing my vocal cords telling them to respect the neighbors. Over and over again. Now, instead of yelling at them to pipe down, I give the whistle a short, quiet blast and they know that they're either too loud or rough housing and to knock it off.

Obviously no glass containers. I don't care if my uncle flies in from Germany with the best bottled beer in the world. It goes in a plastic cup or a plastic pitcher.
