I know they are mandarin oranges but so easy to peel, no seeds and really really tasty..

Think someone mentioned them before here, but I just picked up a bag at WalMart today. So I'm enjoying them.

Old garden roses and semi-old garden roses like H. Musks) that I have in the yard for minimum 3 years, in certain cases much longer. Climbers: Crepuscule, Jaune Desprez, Prosperity, Marechal Niel, Buff Beauty. - these are "no spray" in my garden. Zephirine Drouhin (the oldest climber), Gloire de Dijon (it suffered major dieback after the big Eastern freeze; if it dies, I will order a new one from Pickering)- Zephirine needs spraying and Gloire also benefits from occasional spraying. Anoter Noisette I have is Celine Forestier (must be sprayed) Shrubs: SDLM (I have 4), Kronprincessin Victoria (2), Catherine Mermet, Felicia (needs spraying), Paul Neyron, Devoniensis, Lady HillGruss an Aachen, Duchesse de Brabant (about 8 years), Luise Philippe, Lady Hillingdon, Clotilde Soupert, Mme. J. Schwartz and Baronne Prevost (BP must be sprayed regularly). A few Bourbons, HPs, a few teas and Portalnd damasks were planted in the last 3 years except for Comte the Chambord that I have about 6 years - I intend to SP it every year but the fragrance saves its place. Moderns - too many to list so I mention a few Climbers: Colette (my favorite and the best modern climber I have), New Dawn, cl. Pink Peace, Cl. Peace (all are older than 6 years - DH would not hear about getting rid of cl. Peace that must be sprayed and has RMV), The Field of the Woods, Pele, cl. America and a no name cl. with similar flowers as Foklore, Ilse Krohn Superior, Eden. Cl. Mrs Mc Gredy, Royal Sunset. I think Papi Delbard is in his 3rd year. HTs, floribundas and shrubs: Abbaye de Cluny, Bolero, Frederic Mistral, Johann Strauss, Yves Piaget,Bewitched (the oldest HT in my yard along with Double Delight), Lemon Spice, Antigua (one of the oldest), Taboo, Papa Meilland (I got a second one this year), Royal William, Velvet Fragrance, Black Baccarat, Rouge Royale, Red Intuition, Jardins de Bagatelle, Secret, Crimson Glory, Europeana, Bride's Dream, Ambridge rose, Medallion, Tiffany, Cherry Parfait, Paris d'Yves St. Laurent, Belle Epoque, Valencia, Scent-Sation, Just Joey, Elina, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Heritage, Abraham Darby, Paradise, Memorial Day, Ginger Hill and about a hundred more. It would have been a much shorter list If I should enumerate those that I SP-ned or gave away.

Looking for a sweet Orange like the 'Cuties' you buy in the store
Q

I'd recommend Satsuma mandarins. They're better than the "Cuties" often sold at the store. Satsuma is effortless to peel and nearly seedless. The tree can take just a few years to develop flavor though, so don't be put off if the first fruits taste a little bland. Kishu is also a good one. A little tart but very flavorful. The fruit size is very small but that doesn't matter since the skin is effortless to peel off and they're completely seedless, you can pop them right in your mouth. As to answering the question about can you eat Kishu skin, I'm not sure about that. The skin is thin and soft, but I don't think it's quite as edible as a kumquat. The bigger issue would be the white rind that's right underneath the skin, that would probably start giving you a mouthful of something not very pleasant. But it doesn't really matter because, despite the small fruit size the skin is still very loose and very easy to peel off. The reason people are not familiar with these mandarins is they do not have that long of a shelf life, so they are not really commercially viable to distribute to supermarkets. When I was little I used to eat Satsumas off a tree (though I didn't know they were Satsuma at the time, I was just told it was a "tangerine" tree, not really technically correct). The tree must have been at least 25 years old, I can't begin to describe how delicious and perfect they were. The bags of Cuties sold at the supermarket are pretty awful by comparison (the skin is much harder to peel off, inferior flavor, more seeds, not as fresh, slightly different aroma). Fortunately Satsuma does have more cold hardiness than Orange.

Yummy lemon loaf recipe.

Just to leapfrog back to the original subject for a sec, I had a bag of lemons that were on their way out, so this recipe was perfect timing for me. I baked two loaves last night, with almost all the same changes you made, Barnmom--I didn't have any buttermilk, so I used sour cream thinned with regular milk, and when I went to get the ground ginger, there wasn't any there. I also ran out of granulated sugar midway through (that was unexpected!), so I subbed the shortfall with light brown sugar. And also did the powdered sugar/poke holes glaze. They came out great! I stuck the extra one in the freezer last night, but it may not be there long, since we're already halfway through the first one. Thanks for posting this--it's a lovely, lemony, moist cake, and I'll make it again for sure.

RECIPE: Yummy Yogurt Marinated Chicken
Q

Just to throw in my two cents regarding yogurt... I'm Greek, and my family always served plain, unsweetened yogurt on the side, as a condiment, for spicy & tomato-ey dishes. Similar to the use of raita sauces in Indian cuisine. When Yoplait came out with sweetened, fruit flavored yogurts, I couldn't stand them. To me, yogurt always went with savory dishes. After all these years, I still don't care for the sweet & fruity yogurts. I agree with Woodie that Greek yogurt is easier on get down. And I've also come to the conclusion that full-fat yogurt tastes bests. The non-fat or lower fat versions seem way too sour to me. This chicken recipe sounds really good. I'm going to have to try it soon.

Aren't they good, DH isn't much for oranges but he will eat about three a day of those. I've bought most of them at Costco I think, but locally too so I can keep them in the house all the time while still available.

I picked up some groceries for my mother when in her town on Easter, included 5#s of the cuties, she likes them too :)

Who says Cuties are made for kids....

teresave, I had looked them up on their website and apparently they are two different varieties depending on which month it is. Maybe you got a bag as the peak for one was coming to an end - I don't remember now which two are sold under the name Cutie. We've been buying them continuously since about October and it seems we too got one bag closer to or not long after the holidays that was OK, but not quite as good. But just the one, all the others have been consistent.

I need to make a Cutie run. Can't tell you how much I like them! Some that I got this year were labeled Mandarins. I think they came fom Mexico. I love Cuties and bananas for the same reasons.....great taste, very portable, easy to open, no mess. Aren't we lucky to have such goodies available?

I was really disappointed with the last batch I bought they were not good. Not very sweet at all and chewy. I have not bought any since.

A coincidence.

I have seen ads for Cuties for a good while and have been tempted by them, but never bought any.

For some reason, any citrus I eat, or attempt to eat, causes my jaws to "clinch" and none of them ever taste sweet to me. I didn't want to buy a 5 pound box, only to not like them. This week at Kroger, with the 5 pound boxes, they also had 3 pound bags which were labeled Mandarins, and I was told they are the same, and I bought a bag of them. On the bag it says Premium California. I would have thought Florida.
I've bought many canned Mandarin oranges for the "pig picking cake" and for salads.

Unfortunately these I bought are not very tasty; in fact they seemed dry to me, not really juicy, and not at all sweet. I Googled to see what I had bought.

And after reading the above posts, I see what probably explains why they are not the best. Live and learn. I'll give them to my DD when she comes out on Sunday. If she doesn't like them, she will cut them up for the birds. They won't be wasted.

Link is to a colorful and interesting site.
