how would you describe this kitchen?

Besides "beautiful"!

I'm at the beginning stages of a moderate kithchen makeover and I'm having trouble coming up with a mission statement as suggested in the FAQ.

Please check out the link below and pictures of this award winning kitchen, and tell me what "look" or "feeling" vibe this kitchen gives you. And then...what it is you think makes it that way.

I know I can't have this exact kichen for many reasons (budget! keeping our golden maple cabinets, different layout, etc) but of all the beautiful kitchens I've looked at in the past months, this one speaks to me. But, I can't come up with how I would describe it, what style it is so I can hopefully bring in some of the same feeling.

I do love it too. For me, I think the color scheme has a lot to do with the feel..... the white cabs along with that particular shade of yellow and the red accents make it zing!

Yes, wax beans have a different flavor and it is milder. Some people prefer them others prefer the green ones. Wax beans are the only veggie my sister-in-law who hates vegetables will eat voluntarily. If you don't enjoy them then you're probably right to skip the wax beans and plant more of something you like better. :-) Have you tried yardlongs? This is my first time with them and I enjoyed the first harvest tonight very much. They have a strong, assertive flavor.

Well, we live in a mid-19th c farmhouse with most of its original details intact, so I am somewhat constrained by that. I want a plain, workman-like space for the kitchen essentials, with nothing pretending to be something it isn't. (No faux wear marks or fly-specking details on my cabs for instance - at least none applied at the factory; we're not talking about what will happen naturally if someone leaves the doggone screen door open again! For those I've got my Spic 'n Span bucket ready.) I know this sounds drab and dull, but that's not the case since I have details like 14" tall skirting boards with deeply curved moldings; an open staircase with a second-floor gallery and the underlying (also rigid) balance and symmetry of a full-on Greek Revival building. With such strong elements never out of the picture, I have just had to learn to get out of the way. Since almost all our stuff is passed down from our families, (some period antiques and but mostly just old pieces, approaching legal antique status of their own, but not period, IYKWIM) my "style" of decorating is pretty much "what we found in the attic", combined, now, with what we've inherited from our parents. I can't really imagine what it is like to choose to decorate in a defined "style" or go out intending to purchase stuff to go with a particular style. When I read or see pictures here of what people are working on, I often wonder how you ever decided which one to choose. Seems like a lot of energy is expended working out those details. I just concentrate on 1) What do I need to make this room work for how we want to use it? 2) What do I have that will do the job? 3)(If I have more than one option for #2) Which piece looks best (mostly scale) with the other stuff in the room? 4) What can I/do I have to do with it (or to it) to spiff it up enough so make it presentable, if necessary? (If I can't find a suitable piece for some use, then we usually do without until a solution appears.) In general I find that my old stuff tends to look well with my other old stuff, providing the scale of the piece is right, particularly in the context of it all being old stuff, in an old house. And to some degree, after attending to comfort and practicality/feasability and cleanliness (which can include cleaning up a wood finish or redoing upholstery), I really don't care to do more. The only place where I can fall in with the forum's decorating mania, is color. That really lights my fire! I can spend weeks and months thinking about, testing and generally feeding the decorating part of my brain while contemplating which color to put on my walls. L

Interesting some of the houses you can come across. I was surprised to find such a polarizing design and wondered where the concept may have come from. Here is a one that surprised me. Built in a small mid central WI town in 1863. You don't see much of this anymore. Happy, warm, clean.

Style seems country with a contemporary twist. Very nice kitchen (I clicked on the others as well, awesome pics). I do think the yellow and white mix is what gives this kitchen it's feel.

Sunny. I think a lot of what this kitchen exudes is due to the sunlight, then the other materials that magnify the light's effects...The also sunny and cheerful colors and lots of white/cream to reflect it. The thing is, we may all look at that kitchen and see different aspects of it that mean something to us as individuals.

Can you identify what it is about this kitchen in particular that makes it speak to you more than others? When I was looking for inspiration, a lot of white kitchens kept grabbing my heart, but knowing I wasn't a 'white painted cabinets' person, I had to look deeper to see what else was going on in the kitchen that I liked. It wasn't the white cabinets, but the feeling of being a homey, baking kitchen that I liked. I had to find the other elements that I could use with wood cabinets that would help communicate the same feel. If you can look into this kitchen, and others that might speak to you in the same way, and identify specifics, it could help you.

Transitional...b/w traditional & contemporary...the perfect style, IMHO. OK, I'm biased...that's the style of my kitchen, only w/stained cherry cabinets!

I'd say its timeless/classic. My parents kitchen looks quite like this, and they did it 25+ years ago.

Aside from the use of fabric, I just don't see "french" or "country" or any of that that some of the other posters see.

I thought of only one word - playful. With the polka dots and the bright colours, the way the pattern on the rugs seems to move in waves. It reminds me alot of the sort of things you might see in a nursery or a toddlers room. I don't mean that in a bad way at all - I can totally see how this room speaks to you.

But then, as I've said before, ya gotta love a yellow kitchen.

OK, I'm glad to see some of the same words I was thinking of...I guess my problem is that I don't know the answer to rhome's question yet. I also thought fresh, clean, cheerful, traditional yet cozy, simple and updated. BUT, not quite sure what gives me that impression other than the bright colors and pattern of the fabric, and now that you mention it, I guess the bright shiny surfaces and sunshine. So, I was having a hard time figuring out how to translate that to my situation. Its interesting that the shiny surfaces are part of what gives it the feeling...when I think shiny, I think modern, and sometimes "cold" and I didn't want that. I almost convinced myself that instead of possibly dark Uba Tuba granite (or similar), I NEEDED to have the more expensive Soapstone. The budget would be thrilled if I do not!

Tomorrow I will attempt to post some pictures of what I currently have and list what must stay and go and see if you guys can help me figure out what island cabinet style/color and what counter surface I might want to think about. I don't even have a photobucket account, so wish me luck!

I think the "shiny" that gets it there is most especially the glossy cabinets. They have an enamel look, and most of the painted cabinets I see are more matte. Besides the sunshine there's a lot of artificial lighting, and coming from angles that are pretty obviously photographic bounce lighting rather than installed. The cozy part comes not just from bright fabric, but the toss pillows. That one detail makes a big difference. As do the rugs. They lend a lot to the whole fresh, cozy and cheery thing, though if you have muddy kids and hairy animals they might not stay that way long.

mission statement? why? collect pics you love from magazines or print off the internet. make a list of your wants/needs/must have's and hand it over to the KD or whoever will be making your cabinets.

a picture can say a thousand words. there's no need for you to come up with an essay. have fun!
