Help me with the mudroom layout please
Comments (26)Just to chime in quickly on a few things...from a mom of now 6 boys... We had 6 beautifully lined up cubbies in our previous home...each with their own charging area...nice thought...waste of time & money in our experience. As the kids get older they charge things everywhere, but there! Even DH, he would say, "I'm on-call and need to be able to hear it." Have to agree about the doors and a large family. Not so much that they won't be abe to use the doors, but more for other reasons. The mud room cubbies take abuse, especially from a bunch of boys. They swing open, push too many things in, can get in each others way...need repaired, need cleaned, etc.!!! Coats and backpacks do not IMHO look messy when hung on hooks at all. I like having a basket/drawer for each to house their hats/gloves and another for little odds and ends (that can look messy). Best wishes on an amazing new home for your family!...See Morelayout advise please
Comments (26)Which I foolishly thought was the ovens. I just think walking out into the mudroom hall and then turning right and going around the corner to access the pantry will be a bore. But if you had a doorway/hole in the wall where the dotted box is then you'd save about half the steps to get to the pantry as well as make it more convenient to dart into the laundry room and shift the clothes over from washer to dryer, etc. It just seems like you've built yourself an unneccessary hike into very routine daily jobs. ('Course all that walking is good for your health, but I'd rather get my extra steps on a walk outside rather than traisping back and forth to fetch ingredients or attend to the wash.) This seems a much more major issue than anything else in your plan. Putting the doorway where I suggest would allow you to traverse the shorter diagonal to get to the same place. You could possibly move the fridge to the place where the present doorway is (probably have to scootch it over a bit.) If that's the ovens on the other end of that run then the fridge and ovens could share the same plunk space. or even exchange places if you want people to have access to the fridge w/o coming into your work corridor. Few by-standing civilians will have any interest in visiting the wall ovens but often people want to grab a drink from the fridge. Swapping the oven for the newly- moved fridge would also get the ovens closer to the stove for when you have something that needs both types of heat (sear roasts, or any time you use the oven to keep food warm while completing other steps in a recipe which is something I do often.) Comments (4)Great help rhome. so you think that it'll be too much to have a pendant over the open counterspace overlooking the family room... that's true come to think of it. My whole point was an open unobstructed look toward the back. What about the sunroom? I'm thinking a large ceiling fan (Tommy Bahama like) centered with a light kit, table lamp in the corner, and with those huge windows I get tons of natural light. Off the left window is a pergola/little deck that he used to grow orchids. I want to use it as a garden area for all my fresh herbs and maybe some tomato and pepper plants. Fresh veggies are kinda hard to grow down here cause it just burns up. He built a misting system into the pergola top so it's all set up and waiting for me. I digress... back to lighting... I'm assuming all on dimmers... one switch for the four cans in the main area, separate switch for the cans in the baking/frig area, and a separate one for the pendants? Oh... and one for the light over the table and one for the ceiling fan? I think we're already wired for the ceiling fan in there and I know we have a light over where the table will be. I do want to do the light over by the frig (centered) because it'll be good lighting for coming/going from the laundry area as well. I"m thinking batch feed disposal for the sink. I have a 36" base so I should be able to fit that and a trash? I would also have a small trash by the baking counter I think. Hmmm... brain working overtime again... 'nuff for now! Am I on the right track?...See MoreI need help with my tiny galley kitchen layout! Please advise!
Comments (5)I'm not sure about putting a range under the window. That seems like a recipe for goop and splatter on the window, and also seems likely that, assuming you live in an area with winters, your window is liable to crack/shatter with the temperature extremes of hot from the range vs cold outside. I had that happen in my house when I first moved in, actually, and it didn't even have a range under it, just a sink! So, I'd imagine it being a high risk event with a serious heat source under a window. I think it'd be a lot easier to figure out a good layout with the right side of the diagram filled in. Can you repost a diagram showing what is over there? That way, folks can see traffic flow and imagine any options for that end of the area....See MoreFamCook
