I like the relaxed look, the arms and the fabric much better on the first (top) chair.

I loved the English arms of the first chair -- especially with your wood paneled wall/fireplace. Very pretty. Are you planning to slip cover/reupholster the sofa? I'm not sure the sofa's grey-green color (at least that's what I'm seeing on my screen) goes with the gold tones in the chairs, but I do love the shape.

The gold chairs are going. These chairs I'm buying are replacing them.
The sofa does not photograph well. It is actually a little more olive than it looks in pictures.It also looks better IRL. It has just been reupholstered.

Hi. Both chairs look really nice. I actually have an identical chair to the first one. It is roomy and comfy. I hate to throw a wrench into things, but my only concern with the first chair is that you will have two side by side. For some reason I am not sure about having two of those english arm chairs right next to eachother, maybe it's the slight flair of the arms or the curves? Seems like you see those chairs at an angle to eachother. I could be totally off, but I wanted to mention it so you could consider that. I am in the market for two chairs as well and I know how expensive they are! BTW, who is the manufacturer on those?

I like the second, but I gravitate toward more tailored styling on upholstered pieces. The first one looks a bit frumpy to me.

I have a little room to put those chairs at an angle.I've moved the gold chairs at a bit of an angle to each other since that picture was taken.
What does everyone else think. Do you think those arms are a problem sitting side by side like that.

I would pick the second chair, as I don't care for t-cushions. I also prefer the cleaner lines of the ottoman.

However, I would not want the wheels on either chair. Makes me think of people with very fat legs and little tiny feet.

I like your fabric a lot, and think it would work on either chair, tho the stripe may be better on the rolled arm rather than the gathered london arm of the first chair.

Will you be having some pillows made from the same fabric or a companion fabric for the couch?

Would love to see a piece of artwork hung above the fireplace, something with a lot of lighter color in the background to balance the light color of the brick.

I adore the first chair. It looks very "English country home" to me -- warm and comfy and like the perfect place to curl up with a cup of tea and good book.

I like the second chair - seems more tailored and elegant to me.

I love the first chair (well, except for the funny feet). However, I think that, for the room, and for the fabric you're using, that the second chair might be a better option. I think if you put them at a slight angle, it would look fine.

Personally, I don't know how well the fabric really goes with the couch, though, now that I'm looking at your picture -- but, that's based on the picture you took, plus my monitor colors (and there's quite a difference from your first pic of the couch, to this one). Obviously, you have it in your house, and you know if it does, or not. If it were me, I might have some coordinating pillows in a red to go on the couch. But, that's just me.

I just ordered the twin of the first chair this week, tho mine is made by Lee Industries. I ordered a version with slightly different front legs (no wheels) b/c they freaked my husband out! It IS kind of frumpy, and I didn't like it at first, but it grew on me, and it was comfortable. It's replicating a frumpy english design that's kind of classic.

Anyhow, it's hard to say about that fabric: how will the stripes look on those rolled arms? Do the colors go well with the couch? (you can't really tell on the monitor.) The fabric itself is cool. But I also think two with the same striped fabric might be a little much right next to each other? Tho I do like the first chair better, if the fabric is a definite, it might go better on the second chair.

BTW, have you checked out Lee chairs? They have a huge selection of styles, and there might be one there that seems made for that fabric. I know this is a very hard decision, I just went through it.

Oh my, I sorry Egganddart. I didn't mean to offend you by calling the chair frumpy. I wish I would of known that you just ordered them for your house before I opened my mouth.

It is a timeless, classic design, but for her room I still think the more formal lines would look better. "Frumpy" probably wasn't the best word to choose. "Casual" would be a much better description.

Paintchips, please, don't worry!!! I didn't even think about it as a potential insult towards me!! I agree, anyway, it IS kind of frumpy, which is why I didn't like it in the first place. But once I realized it's a traditional english design I let it grow on me. I like most traditional English things I've seen, and so now I've come to embrace its frumpiness and ordered it because of the way it is. If that makes any sense!

I'm not crazy about the wheels either, but I just haven't found anything else that I like and that isn't too big for the room. I live in a medium size city and we just don't have that much to choose from. When I go to the stores, all I see are really oversized chairs . I've looked in the various catalogs and most chairs are just too large.
Les, I plan to add pillows to the sofa. I wasn't sure if I would get some in the same fabric as the chairs, or just something complimentary. Was just waiting to see what I'm going to end up with in chairs.

Eggandart, I don't have access to Lee furniture. I've checked before because I know a lot of people are really pleased with it.

I love the 1st chair. We just ordered and rec'd 2 chairs from W.H. They are more the style of the 2nd chair but a bit different. I went back and forth between the two styles too. The English style arm has always been my fave and if I had a room that was just for looks I would have gone for that style. What swayed me, si that we will be using these chairs as family chairs (ie, kids draped over arms and in mom's lap reading books, etc). I just couldn't picture the English arms in that context.

So make sure you also think about how you are going to be using them. Also, I prefer a t-seat for comfort (longer seat cushion), but someone shorter might find them uncomfortable.

Love your fabric, but it is a bold statement. We went with the bold statement too and while I love it now, part of me is worried I will tire of it and should have maybe gone with a solid and livened it up with cushions.

Before I stop rambling, I also wanted to say that we are so impressed with the WH quality and comfort, we are planning on writing a letter to the company in appreciation. I think you'll be happy with the quality, whichever you choose.

Budge -- itneresting you say that about the English arms. We have English arms on our sectional for our TV room (I hesitate to call it a living room because that connotes a tv-free environment in my mind). Those pretty English arms haven't stopped DD from draping herself all over it. In fact, she perches on one arm in particular, and the dog sleeps on one specific back cushion.

I also have a dainty little flowered, tufted english armed chair in the corner by the windows that gets a lot of, erm, love. No problems there, either. Ours are Ethan Allen.

I love the first chair. I ordered one like that from Lillian August/Drexel Heritage. The only difference is mine has a rolled back. It has the same T-cushion and rolled arms, even the wheels.

I fell in love with a fabric I saw on a pillow in the store (teal and brown paisley) and had to put it on something. It would have been too much pattern for a sofa. Don't see anything frumpy about it. The lines are soft and classic.

well, I'm just as confused as ever LOL. We have sat in the first one but not the second so that is probably a little safer. Now I'm worried the first may be too English country for the room. I hate ordering upholstered pieces, because you never know for sure if you'll like them. I've had some unpleasant surprises over the years.

Budge, I remember seeing your gorgeous flowered chairs. Are they # 1515? Since you're familiar with WH, the second chair is in their "fast and easy collection", as is the fabric, so it is cheaper than the first one.
I have always had patterned fabric on my upholstered pieces, other than the sofa this time. Pattern hides the dirt better:)

I also love the first chair, but in the fabric that is on it. JMO, but with your room, I don't really care for the fabric you've chosen -- I think I'd rather have more muted colors. It seems too much of a contrast with the sofa and the overall feel of the room. If you're definitely going with that fabric, though, I think it would look better on the second chair. Of course, a little photoshopping would help, but I'm not able to help you out in that dept. I hope somebody else will come to your rescue! Good luck!

Yes I have the chair and I think the wheels are kind of cute. :) They make moving the chair easier, too. We had to move it a lot with the painters here. Love the T-cushion.

Have you considered getting 1 larger chair to go next to the sofa? Then getting 2 smaller - maybe slipper chairs to flank your way gorgeous fireplace.

For some reason, it just looks squished with 2 chairs there - it might just be my perception, thou.

Just a thought.

I also love the lines of the first chair better, but it's hard to envision how it will look in the stripe and how the stripe will look gathered over the roll arm. I would have to vote with the fabric you have selected and wanting to put the chairs next to one another, for the second chair (with the contrasting piping like in the picture). However, they are both lovely chairs so don't think you can go wrong with either one. It's just a matter of personal taste.
