I've never bought egg dye. We always just put a squirt (no need to measure) of food coloring in a tea cup with a dash of vinegar, then fill halfway with boiling water (I just use a ladle and scoop out some of the water from boiling the eggs.

Food coloring is exactly what you buy when you buy egg dye, but it's much cheaper if you don't by the fancy, bunny-covered package--LOL.

You can also use onion skins by placing them in the pot with the eggs when you boil them. The longer you boil them the darker and prettier they get. Then polish them as above.

Beet juice.

I once found a site with a listing of different things you could use to make your own natural dyes for eggs, but I guess I didn't save it, because I can't find it in my favorites.

If you want deep toned eggs use paste or gel food color instead of liquid.

Does anyone 'blow' the eggs before coloring them, or do you hard boil them?
