Green Frog eggs/tadpoles wanted
Comments (4)Willow Pond does have green frog tadpoles, thanks. And thanks for the advice about the bullfrogs, something I have already experienced. My last pond had leopard, green and bull frogs at first. Eventually all there was were two fat bullfrogs. After moving from Illinois where green frogs are plentiful to Nebraska where they seem to be missing, I needed to get some. They stay in/near the water and the leopard frogs wander far away, so they don't really compete for the same food. Plus they are very tame in my experience, sometimes eating crickets right out of my hand. I actually watched one of the big bullfrogs at my provious pond eat a sparrow that got too close! I will be happy when my shipment of 50 tads arrive....See MoreBig Egg Smoker ?
Comments (5)Changeling, I own two. Bought a large and loved it so much I bought a small as well. Bottom line; it uses lump charcoal as a heat source. You can grill at temps up to 1000+F (great for searing steaks) or slow smoke at temps in the 150F-225F range. It's made of a ceramic material and holds temps very well. I've done roasts and turkeys outside in the winter at -30F without any problem. Can't do that with a metal gas BBQ. Be warned if you get one... you become a cult member LOL. If youÂre really interested, peruse the Big Green Egg forum. LotÂs of good folks there always willing to answer questions, link below. Comments (18)My husband has decided on only getting the Green Egg and using it as a grill. According to him it's suppose to be the greatest invention ever! Yeah, we still have another grill hanging around, but the Egg is the only one we ever use any more. I think we're going to gift the charcoal grill to our daughter and new son-in-law. They're pretty much starting from nothing, so they'll appreciate it. Annette, I like your set-up. We're planning on something fairly similar. We intend to add a second, smaller Big Green Egg later. This'll allow us to use the smaller one when we want to cook just for us two, and when we have guests we can use the smaller one for an appetizer and the larger one for an entree. We also want a smaller one so we can take it camping. "If you want to cook on a covered porch, you must use a strong vent hood." ... i agree. Been there, done that. Won't do it again. Wondering how we're having such different experiences ... here's what I suspect: My covered porch, which works FINE with a no-hood grill is set up like the one on the left -- covered porch is attached to the house /is open to the air on three sides and gets a pretty good breeze. My porch is about 6' above ground level /steps on both ends -- could that make a difference? I wonder if people who are having a different experience have a porch more like the one to the right -- an "indented" porch? Or at least a porch that in some way gets less breeze....See MoreWeber vs Kamado??
Comments (9)"Not only moisture but heat retention. Insulated metal cans don't compare. If they did there would be no market for ceramic cookers." fyi: http://bbq.about.com/od/charcoalgrills/tp/Top-10-Kamado-Grills.htm Traditionally Kamado style cookers have been among the most expensive charcoal grills/smokers on the market. Originally made with a heavy ceramic shell, these grills seemed fragile (though they are not with proper care) and priced much high than the typical metal kettle grills. The Char-Griller Akorn is a kamado style grill. It has all the fuel efficiency, high temperature cooking abilities, and low and slow capacity that the much more expensive units do, but at half (or even less) the price. So what's the catch? While competently built, and more than capable of keeping up with he competition, this model lacks the construction quality and long term durability of those pricier other grills. The question you have to ask is, do you buy a cheaper grill to get into this style of grill, buy something more basic and far less money, or go big and buy one of those ceramic grills everyone raves about. If you google BGE v. Akorn you'll find this pretty much sums up the hundreds of posts from real users on both sides (Amazon was helpful when first looking due to larger sample size). And in the words of the OP: "We don't BBQ much except for our quarterly family gatherings (approx 25 people) and everybody is a foodie these days." And yes, the Akorn pizza stone works fine or you can use the smoking stone for pizza. Being a foodie doesn't make one any smarter, more frugal or knowledgeable about markets than the next person....See Moreamck2
