2cm underlayment: marine quality plywood?

azstoneconsulting, I was reading your comments on the Counterbalance Island Brackett and read that the MIA recommends marine quality plywood although it is an overkill. I called the Lowe's and talked to the manager, he said he can special order 5/8" marine quality plywood for $73.53 and special order 5/8" ACX plywood for $48.88. The difference is not enormous, but I know nothing about marine quality plywood. Does it cut/saw well? Is it stable? Does it give? Is it too rigid for underlayment? Sometimes more expensive is not always the best for the situation. After all the headache I've been through regarding the underlayment, I want to make sure the plywood is the best for the job. What should I do?

the "Marine" quality that was put in the MIA spec by the late Vincent Migliori - who
was the MIA technical director until his passing back in 2003 - was one of
Vincent's ways of - shall I say - "OVER engineering" stuff way past where it
needed to be - he was being careful - but in this case, I disagreed with his logic...

Let's put it this way - Let's say you do go to the expense of using marine grade
plywood -
The ONLY benefit you'll have from using Marine grade plywood IMHO - is
IF your kitchen is constantly being flooded - ie - New Orleans from Hurricane
Katrina, and even then - your cabinets will fall apart from the water damage
and your house will be ruined form the mold - but your subtops will
still be good - 'cause they're marine grade plywood... does this make sense???

Vincent was a good friend, but he and I went "round and round" on this point
and although in 25+ years of Fabricating - I have NEVER - EVER used Marine
Grade plywood on ANY project I have ever done in my career.... ACX - Like
we discussed today - will work fine for your application...

IMHO - MIA needs to redact that point in their next Design Manual - I will talk to my friends
there about it - Again - IMHO, 5/8" ACX plywood is fine for a conventional Kitchen application......

Stay with the ACX grade - you'll be fine - 5/8" if you can get it out there
in Virginia.....

I would agree with Kevin, but will say that I did use a lot of marine grade plywood in my remodel because of it's stregnth and ability to stay stable if water damaged.

We had a garbage disposal go out in the old kitchen. The leak was actually a spray upwards which happened only when using it (until the entire thing fell out). So during the many months it sprayed small amounts of water (which went down into the cabinet, which was slanted back towards the wall so we didn't see water outside of it) it damaged the underlyment (as well as the cabinet eventually). We had horrible corian, so no big loss, but after that damage I decided that the unexpected was possible...and so for a small difference in cost, it was well worth planning for the utmost goofy possible scenario...because we tend to always attract the utmost goofy possible scenario...

If I had been planning on keeping that horrific plastic counter top I'd have had an issue....I did not so it was not a big deal, but I'm glad I also didn't step through the counter while painting...cuz I walk on the counters all the time. (I have quit walking on the onyx counter, but the rest are fair game...and all counters and walls with plywood in them have marine grade in my place).

Its probably overkill, but $30 bucks of overkill is worth it to me!

You might consider checking with a better building supply...they'll have it in stock.

If you know you like the look, then you know you like the look (I do, too). It took me a while to figure out that "I don't think you'll be happy with X" most often means either "I don't like the way it looks personally" or "It's a pain to do it that way." I wish I'd had a translation dictionary at the beginning of each project! (My husband and contractor both thought 3 cm was the way to go and I didn't feel strongly enough to want to use up all my vetoes that day!)

You can do it without a built up edge by putting a bit of molding that matches the cabinet material on the edge of the plywood. I have two friends who did 2 cm without a built up edge. One put a simple molding strip on the edge of the plywood. One left it bare - as a visitor, I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't been checking to decide what to do in our kitchen. The overhang of the granite hides the edge if you don't put your head down to look. But leaving the plywood edge bare and knowing it was there would bother me.

A plywood subtop is only required for 2cm stone. 3cm stone does not need it.It rests directly on the cabinets. I'm not sure why you think a plywood subtop would interfere with your drawers. It lays on top of the cabinets, not recessed into them. As far as the support needed for a soapstone sink, it will depend on if you purchased the right sink base for a farm sink or not. If you purchased a farm sink base, all you will need to do is place the sink on the plywood platform and shim until the lip of your sink is at the same height as your cabinet top. If you need to rebuild an existing sink base for a farm sink, then you will need to remove the doors, false drawer fronts, and cut through the horizontal rail between the two to remove it. Then you will build a platform with 2x4s and 3/4" plywood at the correct height needed to get the rim of your sink flush with the cabinet tops. You may need to remove the toekick and reinforce under the contact points of the 2x4s in order to transfer the weight of the sink correctly down to the floor. It will depend on how thick the flooring of your cabinet is and in what condition it may be in. After the sink is installed, you will need to use a cafe rod to hang a curtain over the exposed plumbing below or remake your doors into shorter ones (pretty darn difficult for most cabinetry) and reattach them.

"Seek and ye shall find; ask and ye shall receive." Ten hours ago I posted " Plywood is incapable of applying constant upward pressure on a sink as straps on sinks do. And replacing the sink would be a nightmare." Well I went to work and my nightmare has come true. This sink, undermounted in 2cm stone, is supported by plywood and is leaking like a sieve. I don't know when I've seen a worse topical caulk job. A knife slides easily between the sink flange and the bottom of the stone. That leaking is contributing to the failing seam. If it leaks enough to rust a steel reinforcement rod, it can blow the front rail off and crack the rear. There's a dishwasher to the left and a wash machine to the right (small condo) that will have to be pulled so I can Rotozip the cabinet sides to gain access to the plywood so I can remove it to remove the sink. I'll have to patch the cabinet sides back together, install the sink harness or straps, remake the seams, and reinstall the sink and appliances. I'm practically writing my proposal in this post. I can change a strapped sink in an hour and a quarter. I'm going to propose a Kohler K-3942 as an alternative. The appliances could stay, no cabinet alterations, and the existing sink, plywood and all, would be cut out from the top. I won't have to make the front seam either. This bachelor likes stainless steel apron sinks. Wish me luck please. And never, ever, use plywood to support a sink.
