Buying new cheaper sofa vs better quality used sofa.
Comments (9)I think it would depend on the couch in question. In general used uphostered furniture is a huge bargain. I think if one goes to the home and inspects in person, one would get a good idea of the kind of household it was. If is is stained or odiferous, then don't buy it. In general - not always - a good quality sofa is simply more comfortable to sit on. And often the fabrics used are more beautiful. That of course depends on the sofa. Of course it is easier to go to IKEA and order a sofa versus taking some time to track down used sofas which may or may not pan out. You probably wouldn't be able to take home a sofa the same day unless you were incredibly lucky in terms of finding a used style you like. I would assume that these sofas are place holders while you wait for the sofa . you actually want to come into inventory....See MoreWhat brands still make high quality coffee tables and ottomans?
Comments (20)@M Riz no to amish! Biggest supplier of puppy mill dogs. Also they are not entirely truthful re furniture. Years ago before I was aware of puppy mills we purchased what we thought was an amish built swing to later find out it was amish "assembled". Swing kit purchased from a big box store and they put together....See MoreYour favorite brands still making high quality furniture in 2021?
Comments (26)When my dad sold the house I grew up in, we were all settled enough or close to being settled enough that very few pieces of furniture were sold and all of us, either children or grandchildren have something, and there was some regret about some of the pieces that sold within a short period of time after. A lot of the furniture did need to be put in (climate controlled) storage for a few years, but it was worth it. I have most of the receipts. They used a decorator from a major department store and my dad, who was a doctor, took a job at another hospital just to pay for the furniture. Considering that it virtually all survives somewhere after 50 + years it was a good investment. I live in an area with several major university hospitals and graduate programs, and when I first moved here, I would see some really interesting vintage furniture moving in and out of grad students' apartments: obviously the high quality but "dated" furniture from their (fairly affluent probably) parents' houses and then a few years later some of the same really interesting stuff would end up in the local used furniture store if they did not take it with them again. (Random Paul Evans, and Edward Wormley even) Well that has changed, now the residents move in and a furniture truck pulls up and delivers new furniture and after they have done their time it gets dragged out to the street and abandoned, and if the sofa is lucky, someone grabs it before the cushions get stolen, after which it is worthless, or if it is unlucky it sits there deteriorating until it gets hauled away, or if it's *really* unlucky it gets set on fire (very rare but not unheard of). It's just very wasteful but it's all so cheap now its not even worth moving....See MoreFinest brands of furniture today? Century still high quality? Others?
Comments (3)I think Baker still makes very high quality stuff. However the cost is gaspingly expensive. I was thinking of ordering two Baker occasional chairs - nothing particularly fancy or large. The cost was about $7000 per chair. My designer was somewhat shocked by the price as well since the price for their stuff had gone up so significantly in a short period of time....See Moreogrose_tx
