Yes, You Can.......

I found out today, that you can bake with the Wick's strawberry pie glaze. I used it plus some rhubarb and some fresh strawberries and a bit of brown sugar plus butter on top and baked a double crust pie. I had more filling than I needed for my pie so I just poured it into an empty pie pan and baked it. The filling was really good.

I haven't been able to post on here as my internet connection is way too slow and too I have been sick. Had to make an emergency trip Friday afternoon to the doctor's office. At first they said they could not fit me in and to go to the emergency room. We were just getting into the car when the doctor's office called and had me to come there. So, I am on the mend.

Glad you're on the mend, Sue. :)

I've never eaten rhubarb and am not fond of strawberries, but I do love a good pie. In past years, I've used the extra fillings in my pies just like you did...yummy even tho the crust is one of my favorite things. I still make homemade pie crusts, do you?

Hi Granlan, thanks for the good wishes. I was asleep and someone decided to come up stairs and I got woken. So who knows when I can fall asleep.

Yes, I do make my own pie dough. I try to keep a big batch made up and frozen in my freezer and then roll it out, sometimes I have it rolled out and ready to add fillings and that is what I had today. I don't think I would have felt up to rolling out pie dough. Youngest daughter Amber and I rode into town, she needed to run an errand and I sat in the truck with the dogs. We went to a store that had nice garden and flower plants. I didn't get out but she did and we talked back and fourth on our cell phones and I am not sure now what I did buy. I know I got tomato plants and pepper plants, different kinds. She got some for her garden too. She took them all back to their house and will bring them back when we plant. The plants were nice sized, 4 pack for $1.15. One of our sons in law came today and re tilled our garden spot that we haven't planted yet. It worked up really nice. He made the rounds and tilled Amber's as well as our second oldest, Terri's plus ours. he was busy. He likes doing that though. He has a nice John Deere.

My husband ate a fourth of a pie tonight, unless he went back after more. I tell my kids I only like two kinds of pie, hot and cold. I only ate one piece. I try not to eat many sweets. I hope everyone else has kept well.

Drram... 100 seeds??? Wow, you must want a lot of bitter melon! The vines grow quite large; I plant mine 2-3 feet apart along a trellis, and they cover it densely. Bitter melon seeds have a very tough seed coat, and germinate much better if you nick the seed before planting. Using the corner of a file, a jeweler's saw blade, or a sharp knife (carefully!) gently nick the _side edge_ of the seed; you want to just barely break through the seed coat. Germination is erratic (as with many gourds) even with the broken seed coat; so plant 2-3 seeds where you want a plant & thin to the strongest one. Since higher temps promote better germination, starting seeds in pots (at around 80 degrees F.) is helpful. Wish I had an idea to help you this year, but I agree with Violet; the vines will not have time to mature fruit, and cucurbits require an intense light source - normal flourescents or grow lights would be inadequate for the task. Plus, if the plants are not already in pots, they would suffer severe (probably fatal) root damage during transplanting.

For the last 12 years, my plants have had NO early morning direct sun, and NO late afternoon direct sun. My window for direct full sun has been from about 9 AM to 2 PM. My production is not as good as some who have more sunlight, but the taste is just as great. The areas that get less sunlight are where I plant early varieties like Siberian, SubArctic Plenty, Celebrity, etc. They seem to thrive and set fruit all summer long if they can get some shade. I put others like Giant Tree, Big Rainbow, Cherokee Purple, Supersteak, and such in the areas that get MY maximum direct sunlight time. I put others like Golden Jubilee and Better Boy in the middle ground. I found that if I limit the size of the container, it seems that the plants don't get so spindly as full sun depraved plants tend to do. I think we should not gripe or complain about shade, we should manage it. The experts out there may be able add facts such as sugar-conversions, disease susceptability, etc. Personally, I haven't had anything worse than an occasional hornworm for more than a decade. Of course, I got rid of most of the other wilts, and leaf diseases, and underground critters when I went to containers. I've recently opened up an area that will get about 8 hours of direct sun each day. That's why I've been looking for Heat-tolerant varieties. Here in Zone 7b northeast of HOT-LANTA, GA, heat, humidity, and temperatures are a huge problem. I fully appreciate that there are many areas that don't have this problem. My point is that when I started managing my shade (or my full sun time), raising tomatoes became fun again and less disappointing. So, I say write it down, SHADE IS GOOD!!!

Its holding up great in my bathroom. In November, I repainted that bathroom, a different color, and so it has been repainted again. It didnt need repainting, I just did things a bit different in there and repainted. Its been a lot of years now, since I first painted it.
