Bitter melon in a pot? Yes, you can! (Photos)
Comments (6)Drram... 100 seeds??? Wow, you must want a lot of bitter melon! The vines grow quite large; I plant mine 2-3 feet apart along a trellis, and they cover it densely. Bitter melon seeds have a very tough seed coat, and germinate much better if you nick the seed before planting. Using the corner of a file, a jeweler's saw blade, or a sharp knife (carefully!) gently nick the _side edge_ of the seed; you want to just barely break through the seed coat. Germination is erratic (as with many gourds) even with the broken seed coat; so plant 2-3 seeds where you want a plant & thin to the strongest one. Since higher temps promote better germination, starting seeds in pots (at around 80 degrees F.) is helpful. Wish I had an idea to help you this year, but I agree with Violet; the vines will not have time to mature fruit, and cucurbits require an intense light source - normal flourescents or grow lights would be inadequate for the task. Plus, if the plants are not already in pots, they would suffer severe (probably fatal) root damage during transplanting....See MoreRadiant heat in the garage;we're in Minnesota--yes/no???
Comments (45)chad_m, The humidity comes from the snowy cars coming in and melting off day after day, night after night. It's one of the issues besides operating cost of a tight, heated garage. The humidity plus road salt equals bad news for your vehicles. I have the tubes in the floor and have not yet hooked up the heat source for mine and this is one of the concerns I have. There are some humidifiers that work at lower temps, but some just keep a window cracked. This'll make the green police shudder of course. So you have the cost to heat it, then dehumidify it. In my case gas is free so the heat angle doesn't bother me one bit, but I don't want to rust out my cars so I'll probably bite the bullet on humidification. My garage has a future apartment above it so keeping the garage at 50 degrees would help keep the apartment floor warm. I had a master bedroom and closet over an unheated garage at the last house and the floor temp difference was noticeable....See MoreCanned Lighting - yes, no, or "yes, but"
Comments (71)My DH has been in love with the recessed cans for a long time. Me..not so much. But then, in Dec 2012 we sold our house and bought a brand new one with all the energy upgrades so necessary if you want to be able to afford your power bill in California! (people at work mocked my $300+ summer electric bill for a 1900 sq. ft home because most of them paid more like $5-700!) We not only got the included recessed cans, (4 in kitchen, 2 over the bed in master bedroom--which are controlled by a switch on each side of the bed--delightful for an in-bed reader like myself!) but I also let him talk me into paying for extra ones they offered...2 over the dining area in the great room, 4 in the Living area, and 4 in the den. (there's another in the little entry to the guest bath right off front entry and two in the entry itself) Each set is controlled by a wall switch. Also they are almost all on dimmers...but not the ones that light up the kitchen. The builder added a ceiling fan with light in the living area, we added ceiling fans with lights in both bedrooms and the den. (Again....fans in HOT HOT Central Valley California are needed!) I have lamps in every room for ambient lighting. We just installed gorgeous Polished Nickel Restoration Hardware Harmon pendants above our island, as we paid for pre-wire for pendants. So, what do I now think about recessed cans and other lighting? After 6 months I love the cans. You walk in and flip on your can lights to brighten your workspace in kitchen, or read in the living room. You can dim them for ambiance. If you like, you can use lamps only. Or when you go to bed at night, you have the option of turning on your own recessed can light (and maybe your lamp too) to read. I think there's a place for all of the above, and it sure is nice to have the options! I've included the link to the builders site so you can see how the cans look in the model photos. Comments (6)Looks like marlite in very bad condition. You may have to do more than a light scuff in some areas. You also need to prime it before painting with a high quality bonding sealing primer. I have always used oil based primer on any, I have painted. Once the primer is dry, paint goes on just like on a normal wall....See Moreellimacgardens
