And they're doing it again!

DH just came home from work, with a side trip to the supermarket.

The bath soap we use was on sale, so he bought 2 - 8 packs. Same price, packages appeared the same.

As I always do, I was unwrapping all the soap so it can dry (if you let it dry for a couple months, it lasts longer, of course).

Unwrapped the first package--no problem. Started unwrapping the second package. Wow--what a difference. The bars were NOTICEABLY smaller. They have a 'scooped' section on the side, and are much thinner than the other package was. Also, the imprint of the name on the bar was much deeper.

Looked on the packages (which otherwise appeared identical) and saw that one had a total weight of 36 ounces, the other was 32. That's a WHOLE BAR of soap less.

But, of course, both packages cost the same.

This was dial--be on the lookout if you buy it, and try to get the old packages, with the larger bars, if you can.

This sort of thing annoys the heck out of me. They think they are pulling a fast one on us. I especially dislike when they do this to food items, as it messes with my recipes. Remember when canned items were 16 ounces? Now it's 14 ounces. Just leave the size the same and increase the price, please, so that the change doesn't throw off recipes.

Same situation with Zest, so it's probably that way with all of them. Plus the newly shaped bar is very difficult for me to hold onto when it's dry, let alone when it's wet. Just charge me more and leave the size/shape alone.

Shirley, stepping down from the vent box now.

Paper Towel Germination?
Q
Comments (6)
I try a different method of seeds germinating. Mine is based on wicking paper towel system, where seeds can breathe freely, and i can control the wetting necessity of the seeds. You can do that simply by inserting any rope or cotton cable in a pot of size 12 cm into one of the holes, and drag it down from another whole. You must have at least 15 cm hanging down from both sides, and a least one. Place the pot above a glass jar, filled with 30% water, having the rope immersed in water (Water can maximum wicks up to 25 cm) . Put your paper towel, a tough one, into a plantation pot and place your seeds onto it. Cover it with another and wet the whole towels. Place them in the sun or the shade, anywhere you think is suitable, and check them daily. You will see the germination within a couple of days if the seeds are new. With the water level, you can control the humidity level of the wicking system. More water means more moisture. I have been using this method for more than a year now and the results are always positive, including all planted seeds I used, even passion fruit seeds. I will upload a photo I made on 3D to show the concept. Good luck with your seeds.

They're here They're here . . .

Thank you again everyone for the kind words. :) Where am I going to put all of these ? That certainly is the $64,000.00 question !!! I counted yesterday: 31 different types in pots 3 of those pots are Andrew 33 pots total 3 different types in the ground 3 Elegans (stationary, not moving them) 2 Wide Brim 1 Tiny Tears 5 NOID in ground 3 clump #1 3 clump #2 1 ½ clump #3 1 mature mini no ID 1 mature mini no ID TONS of Elegans seedlings we dug up out of the front bed and put in the back. That is all the hosta on the property. So I have about 31 places to find for all the new additions. This does not include the 40+ I have still “to order” on my wishlist. As of today 7/29/12 I have only one bed clear. Initially I feel like I want to panic . . . but the flip side (for me at least) is I am not necessarily in any hurry to get them in the ground. I would almost prefer to let them get a few years in pots where I can coddle them and take my time finding just the right spot. So, in theory I believe I have enough room for them all (plus more) but it may be a good long time before they get placed in a permanent position. When I started this project I knew it would be a long hard road to beautification. My goal is to work with as much already existing in the ground as feasibly possible. I will be ripping out a lot of established shrubs and moving existing perennials, but more so to rearrange and start over. There is an existing design that was originally landscaped into the yard, so I will be working with that and adjusting lines and height as needed. But for the most part I am settled into a very long project with no real agenda. I will of course keep you all updated as to any progress that is made. This year though is rather uneventful since I am still in the process of amending and clearing out the first bed so that I can be ready for a spring planting. Here are some glamour shots of “The Jungle”. This first one is a pic of me in the process of clearing out the first bed. These were all taken in early June. And here is basically the jist of what it looked like before I mowed it all to the ground . . . The next grouping are of the section of yard that leads up to the side porch. This I don't think ever had anything planted in it. There is a bed separating the two sections of the front yard so you can't get to this part without going around the house and coming off the side porch. The Hosta in the picture are of seedling Elegans and one of my MIL NOID. It is still too young and neglected to pitch here for proper ID. So all in all I def have enough space to keep me plenty busy for a very long time. Plus we are having an arborist come out in the winter and trim a few trees that desperately need it as well as remove a few that are too close to the house. So there will still be a nice canopy but I will have a lot more light coming through starting in 2013 and that is also something I am going to keep my eye on for plant placement. Thanks as always for looking and reading, Ludi

Hey, not sure on the birdbath but since you have had the Bluebirds eating mealworms you could get some dried mealworms and rehydrate them in water for about an hour or so then drain them before you give them to the Blues. I have been doing this for about 2 weeks now and they are eating them like crazy! Much cheaper than the live ones too I get them for $7 (tax included) for a container of approx 5,000 at a store here in town. I am on my fourth container so far. So much cheaper than the live ones. Mine don't overwinter here but I will continue to feed them until they leave.

Remember Liquid Soap keeps the shower cleaner. You can get a gallon of it at the $1.00 Store for refilling.

Well, just so you know.

I went to the website, tried to send a comment (basically what we all agree on here--leave the size alone and just charge more, if absolutely necessary). The Dial website is messed up, comment wouldn't go through. By then I was past annoyed, so I searched out the name and address of the CEO and wrote him a letter. Doubt it will do any good, but he'll be getting one, anyway.

Last night after dishing out some Breyers ice cream, I noticed the carton seemed not as wide (on the shorter side) as I remember it being.

This is just another way they are getting over on the consumer (so they think) by making the sizes a little smaller, yet raising prices.

I've noticed this on alot of grocery store items.

I open our soap and put it in a hanging basket in the bathroom, it not only dries and last longer, but it leaves a nice smell for a bit, too.

This is indeed a timely post. I buy Dial white bars for DH. I purchased some last week and unwrapped them. I store them in a large open-topped glass jar. Anyhoo, I noticed the same, exact thing! The bars were noticeably more "scopped", both on the sides and the back, and the name imprint is much deeper. I mentioned this to DH, telling him that the bars actually feel lighter. He thought I was being a tad anal. I'm going to show him your post tonight.
Grrrrr....I'm planning on writing the company, just so they know that the average consumer is not falling for their bait and switch ploy.

I don't know if it's okay to post this, but I'll give it a go. If you're going to write, the name of the Pres. & CEO of Dial is Bradly A Casper. The address is: The Dial Corporation, 15101 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, Az. 85254.

The one that gets me are the bags of chips. You open the bag and it's half full...if that. Cereal is the same way.

Thanks azzalea. I went to the Dial website, tried to call the phone number and got a "sorry you couldn't reach us because were busy learning about our products."..huh?. Then I tried their email link, filling in all the required info, went to send it, and got "the webpage you're looking for has expired."
Great way to do business....harumph.

Companies are so sneaky. I tend to get mad at the post office when they raise their rates so often & their service goes waaay down. I just got back from going there at lunch to mail some Certified letters for the company I work for. Turns out that because some of the letters were in a 9x12 envelope, they charge more than just a business envelope. I couldn't have squashed all this stuff in a business envelope because it would never fit so I had to bring them back to the office for additional postage. Turns out they now charge, depending on weight & size, over $6.00 to send a Certified letter in a 9x12 envelope. If gas weren't so high, I could drive them over & deliver them in person. Just my daily vent.

If you lay the box down flat, and shake back and forth, the cereal will unpack itself. The cereal settles and packs together during shipping. I imagine the chips settle too.

Leslie is absolutely correct about the cereal and chips. The packages even say on them that they are sold by weight, not volume, because of the contents settling.

Individual yogurt cups.

175 grams ... 150 grams ... 125 grams ... 113 grams.

Now some offer 100 grams.

Well ... I guess that they've heard that we eat too much ...

... and get fat.

Just one more example of our public-spirited corporations taking to heart the best interests of their clientele!

Would you believe?

With wallet about equally well-filled as before (or possibly a bit less so) after we've been to the grocery.

Have a great, joy-filled (and with gut a bit less filled) spring, everyone.
