Need help with grout color... Bill V. and other tile experts

I'm getting Daltile Timber Glen 8x24 in Hickory. Going to use SpectraLock Grout. What color would you recommend?

Depending on whether you want to go with a darker grout or something that matches, I'd use either the chocolate truffle #43 (darker) or the sand beige #30 (for matching).

But Bill...don't you always recommend the darker grout? Ya' see... I'm listenin'! Would you by chance have a pic of what the chocolate truffle looks like installed?

Perfect thermal isolation is an idealization; there is always some "thermal contact". The study of heat conduction between solids is thermal contact conductance (or thermal contact resistance). The caulking should be where the tile butts up to the window frame. one thing you might consider is using a piece of travertine slab for the shelf.

It used to be that 1/16th was called out for rectified tiles. With the new specs for manufacturing, you start getting more variations in tile size. Even in rectified, believe it or not. The new installation recommendation, which has actually been around for a few years, is to have the grout line 3-times the size of the variation within the tiles. This usually comes down to an 1/8th inch grout line. Lippage can also be an issue based on the pattern. A stacked pattern might not show lippage whereas a running bond could. The larger the tile, the more chance you have of lippage with offset patterns. That's all due to the tiles not being perfectly flat. A slight warp, pillow, or pringing (like the pringles potato chip). The grout needs depth. Otherwise it'll just pop out. So a 1/32nd gap with a beveled edge, you may not have durability, because the installer may not pack the joint (if there even is an actual joint) with grout. So: Not to dump on the guy who plans on going 1/32nd...but I'd nix that. Someone who tells me they're going with 1/32nd, I think they're just going to lightly butt the tiles together and get whatever grout penetration they can. And it'll likely be nothing more than topical grout with very little actually packing whatever gap there would be between the tiles. With the new specs, 1/8th inch is the new standard. You could still go 1/16th if the tiles and pattern allow for it, the installer is comfortable with it, and it's called out in the specs...but I'd not advocate going less.

Great! Thanks for the speedy reply :) Ok one more quick question. Where do we start the first course? At the far side of the counter and working our way across, adjusting for the window area when we get to it? Or start with the first tile in the middle of the window area and work out to both sides from there so that the "L" cutting around each side is symmetrical? The window is not in the exact middle of the entire counter so the runs on either side will be different total lengths. Thanks again Bill :)

Yeah, I do. But not everybody wants to go with it, especially with tile like this. THey'd rather it look as much like hardwood as possible, and that means a matching grout. That's why I gave both choices. My choice would, indeed, be the choc. truffle.

Thanks prill! When picking this tile I decidely thought that my intent wasn't to try and fool people into thinking it's tile; I just really like the tile. One of the reasons why we choose the 8x24 size. Are the SpectraLock colors true to the sample cards? I've read that often colors dry lighter then the cards. I've only seen them online; I have to get a sample card so I can see both colors next to the tile.

OOOOO.... that looks amazing Bill. What a beautiful floor! I think the Chocolate Truffle will give it depth. DH is a bit more conservative and typically is attracted to what's more common but defers to my judgement on design things just like I always go with his instincts on structural things. I'll get a chip of them both but love the look of the above.

Just had a tile floor installed at a client's house. The grout came out 3 shades lighter than the color chip and understandably the client is very unhappy. The tile is a natural stone with a chiseled edge, so the grout lines are very uneven by design. The tile and grout have been sealed, how do I go about changing the grout color? The grout can't be chiseled out due to the tile's uneveness, is there a product that would melt/soften the grout so it could then be removed? Can a grout colorant be used, and if so would it also stain the tile? Please help!
