As a plant collector who's just about filled up her indoor and outdoor plant space, I had an epiphany this year about plant choice. As usual, I spent many a winter's night poring over all the plant catalogs. Made lists of all the plants I really wanted. Figured out who had the best prices. Cut out the less-than-reputable mail order nurseries. Still had way too many choices and way too little money. In a fit of "analysis paralysis" (combined with a truly scary health care crisis in my family that is now happily concluded), I said SCREW IT! I'm not going to order anything and just take my chances that I can find a few of these elite varieties while making my rounds of the area garden centers. This actually has been surprisingly fun. Every visit I will find at least one or two of my oddball choice plants, nice and big and healthy with no postage costs involved. It's a real thrill to find Planta uniqua 'Obscura' next to the run-of-the-mill plants. Instead of being sad that I don't have the 100 varieties of cool new plants, I'm content that I found five of them in our little rinky dink town. A weird way to be content but it's working for me. Could one design a landscape this way? Probably not. A separate observation - one's taste in design changes as one evolves/grows/ages/matures. The garden (or living room or fancy dress) that you like when you are 20 is not the same as the one you like at 30 or 40 or ... So it may be time to rethink some choices as you travel down the journey of life. I really like what frankie said about "It may be somewhat of a cycle of life--like material gains in general. You have to go through a phase of being excited and thrilled by choice and discovery and discover for yourself that at some point the thrill is leading nowhere." When I was 20, I wanted to own everything. Now I have a houseful of STUFF and really would like to unload about 90% of it. Hopefully someday I'll get up the initiative (not gonna unload too many plants though. What I really need is to ditch most of the furniture and live in a large greenhouse with a clothes closet, a library, and a large pile of takeout menus!!)

If you are keeping your current home as a rental then that’s wonderful as you can slowly move your roses while having tenants ! :) i left behind 200 roses. I never thought we’d leave . If we were to leave I certainly never thought it would be to California the only state with restrictions on bringing in plants . I had to cut my garden back very painfully to show the home in the fall . My realtor was constantly harping on me about it . Thanks fully it sold in the early early spring so things were fresh and new by then . When we originally put it on the market in the fall , we were going to make a nice profit from the booming market in our town and move to a nicer school district a few towns over , so I planned on moving my roses. Then my husband got this promotion to California, so I had to say bye to all my beloved plants . I absolutely loathe the thought that the new owners probably removed my roses but that’s what happens . If you don’t like roses , you certainly won’t like 200 of them ;) when we bought this house in Ca there were 35 trumpeter landscape roses on the back pool wall bed . The lady loved that I loved roses and assumed I’d be caring for her very jarring red roses with the slightest hint of orange that really drove me nuts . Couldn’t wait to be rid of them !! Lol

Okay, thank to all who have replied, but I am still so confused about this vine. I've read to cut it back, or keep it cut back to 18-24inches during the first year of growth. I don't even know how old this plant would be considered. I do know that I had one long spindly vine growing up the trellis, I had read that isn't what you want. So I decided to cut it back. But I was so scared to do anything to it. It still looks like the pic above, in this post. Except now, I've cut back that one spindly vine and I see nothing happening now. It looks just like it did the day I purchased it, weeks ago. Now it's not even climbing the trellis. I guess I'm waiting now for something to happen where I cut back, but don't even know what I'm looking for. I can't even tell what's what on this thing. Branches, twigs, hard wood, soft wood, last years wood, this years wood, leaves, buds, I couldn't for the life of me tell you where what starts and where what ends. It's a tangled mess, all down at the bottom. There are two or three main stems coming out of the dirt. I assume that's the start of each section of the vine. So I'm assuming, if I see three main stems coming from the ground, somewhere amongst all the tangled mess, there should be three endings, to each of those stems, in which I could train to climb the trellis if I could find an ending. I don't know, but maybe I should just leave it alone. It's not dead, it's green, I see one ending that might be showing new growth, but if it is, it's still only gonna be one long lanky little vine growing up the trellis all alone, because I can't tell where what starts and where what ends. I'd much rather sacrifice any additional blooming this year and have this thing put out new growth from the ground. But I don't know if I should chop this thing all the way to the ground or not. I just planted it this year, know nothing about it and have done nothing but stress since I got it. I guess if it starts growing again, and I do have that one piece start growing up the trellis, I should just leave it and enjoy it. If I knew that cutting it back all the way to the ground would help it in any way shape or form I'd do it. That way I can see it as it grows, where the starting and ending points are, if that makes any sense. Because as it is now, I can't tell what's what. It's not toxic to bees once it's dried, so it's recommended to spray either in the very early morning or early evening. Basically spray when the bees are back home at their hive. When it's dry they can walk on spinosad and it has no effect on them. It needs to be ingested by chewing and works on an insects stomach. It's not absorbed through their exoskeleton like some other pesticides. Bees can't chew, so it's not a problem for them. I do try to avoid spraying the blossoms if I can and try to just cover the leaves just in case. In general it is very low toxicity to bees and and any other insect that does not chew the leaves.
