Question About Swiffer Products

Hi -

I don't want to buy a Swiffer Wet Jet. I have a mop, a vacuum, a duster, a regular Swiffer (uses the dry sheets - I almost never use this), etc. and just don't want to buy yet another product.

But - I want to use an antibacterial floor cleaner (hardwood floors and tile) and the Swiffer floor cleaner for the Wet Jet seems to get great reviews. Can I just buy the cleaner and just use it with my own mop? If not, how come? And if so, should I use it straight or does the Wet Jet mix some water in with it, meaning that I should do the same?

Opinions, please?

I have the swiffer jet mop with the bottles that you change. A bottle does last quite awhile. I tried to remove the top to refill but couldn't keep it from leaking. I also have the Shark steam mop. I really like the washable pads that it has. I have found the pads also fit my swiffer so I no longer have to buy the box of refills. It doesn't take long and you have the Shark paid for. The Shark just takes water. I buy the distilled for 79 cents at the grocery. We have 8 small grandkids and they spill all the time.

Thanks, Susie. I don't want to buy the jet mop, though, or a steam mop, or another device. Can I just buy the cleaner and use it with my own mop?

There are too many variables for me to even begin to guess how to answer this. You have to keep records of how much you get per plant with the varieties you grow in your specific soil and with your specific growing condtions (I'd weigh them and keep track in pounds) per variety and calculate what you think would be enough from that data. To know how many tomatoes you need to harvest for canning, make a list of everything you want to end up with, in terms of a finished product. For me, the list most years includes salsa (including tons to give away), pasta sauce, pizza sauce, chili base, tomato sauce, stewed tomatoes, lots of regular sun-dried tomatoes, catsup and wine-marinated sun-dried tomatoes. I've done it so long that I don't say "Okay, I need to make 26 jars of pasta sauce so we can eat pasta with home-canned sauce every other week".I am not that organized and our meal schedule is not that regimented. I just make whatever feels right that year. After you figure out what you want to can and how much of each finished product you want to end up with, look at canning recipes and determine how many pounds of tomatoes you need in order to make however many pints or quarts you want of each end product. Calculate how many plants you think you need to meet that goal of x-number-of-pounds, and plant that many plants plus a cushion of 10% more plants to make up for any plants you might lose to pests, diseases, herbicide drift, etc. Then add a couple more plants just for fruit for fresh eating and fresh cooking. I do not want to can tomatoes endlessly from May to November. I only want to can tomatoes in June and the first part of July. By mid-July, I'm through canning tomatoes, have yanked out the excess plants and kept just a few for fresh eating and for cooking fresh, and have planted something else where all those tomato plants once grew. I plant 100-120 plants every spring knowing that growing that many ensures we'll have a huge number of fruits available during the brief time frame that I want to can them. I likely could be happy with 30-40 plants if I was willing to can more sporadically over a longer period, but I want to get my tomato canning done and move on to making pickles and canning peppers. Somewhere in there, I'm canning fruit as well. There is only so much I can do in a 24-hour day, so I have found the method that works best for me. You will have to find the method that works best for you. There is a regular routine you get into if you are putting up food from each edible crop you grow. Luckily, our harvest is spread out over many months. I'd be crazy if I was trying to put up tomatoes, squash, okra, peppers, cucumbers, green beans and southern peas all at the very same time. I try to use my planting dates to stagger the harvest of various items so that I never have more harvest than I can handle. Most years, June is the worst because I'm still dealing with the harvest from the last of the cool-season crops while already dealing with processing the first big yields of the warm-season crops. I do not know anyone who started out canning a year's worth of anything from their garden the first, or even the second or third year they began gardening and/or canning. There's a learning curve involved in canning just like there is in gardening. Most people I know who can now started out with just a batch or two of tomatoes and a batch or two of cucumbers or peppers that first year, and then grew more and processed more the next year, and then did even more the next year. It can take years to get to the point that you can figure out how to grow enough to can, freeze and dehydrate as much as you want to last a certain time period. And, we're assuming the weather cooperates, and you've lived here long enough now to know that the weather does not always cooperate with us.

I was going to try the vinegar, but am glad i called electrolux and that you guys wrote in. I got to try the Sears detergent yesterday, and i really like it. My clothes had a fresh smell, no strong perfumey smell at all. I only used 1 TBL, but i may need to add a little more. I will just have to do trial and error to get the right amount. I did tear my bounce sheet into 3rds. I may try the dryer bar, but doesn't it also put a film on the sensors since it gets on the clothes? I have been wiping the sensors after every other load, so it is still a little confusing. I haven't really found any fabric softener that i like the smell of. I have tried Gain and mixed it with water in the dispensor, but didn't care for the smell. I know i could probably get a softener that is fragrance free, but i do like the smell of bounce when i don't use a whole sheet. Also Larsi, do you wash your sheets on the heavy duty setting since it has no bedding option? Also i have a queen bed, i put all the sheets in plus a couple towels to help the tumble. It seems like it is not enough in there, but i don't like to do towels on anything other than sanitize. How many sheets do you put in yours? Also, how many of the bath towels? I have the thicker ones and always worry about over loading. I usually do towels and wash cloths together, with some kitchen towels. I put 4 bath towels, 4-5 wash cloths,4-5 kitchen towels and wash cloths, and i worry if thats too many. Thanks for all the info. We had a bad experience at Sears once and the manager was a d---! Bought a set from Best Buy and they crossed threaded my hoses and our floor got flooded before we could pull the set out to get to the turn-off. They didn't care at all. Spoke to management, then corporate. Did nada about it, so i told them to come pick them up. I haven't had to wait for an order from lowes before. When i tried the IQ touch, it came the next day.I think everybody's stock is low due to the rebate. Millions bought appliances. I never could get through to get or reserve a rebate, and it just chaps my you know what!! i know i am probably being over cautious with this front loader, but it's a lota bucks and i can't buy one every couple years. Hope it comes by sat.

The washcloths work well at collecting dust, hair, etc. Before I toss them in the washer I always pick off all the crud, or brush them over the trash with a small wisk broom. My friend mists them lightly with water, but I don't. When I was using swiffers I always turned them over, too, but you can't beat washcloths for being cheap. And a lot more swiffer cloths and boxes go into the landfill than washcloths. Good all around. My

I don't know what type mop you have. The swiffer bottle is shaped to fit in the mop and has to be in the slot to let the cleaner come out. If your mop has a bottle that you could fill with the swiffer cleaner it might work. I have taken the the top off the swiffer bottle to refill but haven't had any luck with it not leaking. My Shark just takes plain water. I buy the distilled water at the grocery for 79 cents to use in mine. Also the pads that come with the Shark ( you get five of them and they are really nice) fit on the swiffer mop. Not having to buy the refill pads for the swiffer soon pays for the Shark Steam Mop. We have 8 small grandkids and they spill alot so I need a mop...

Yes, you can buy just the cleaner, but be sure you have a way to store it after you open the bottle - they are not meant to be opened. It is not mixed with water, can't tell you if that would work as well.

Aha - ok, you answered my question when you said "...and has to be in the slot to let the cleaner come out." So the answer to my question is "no".

I will find another antibacterial floor cleaner that I can just use without a special device.

As mentioned the top of the bottle does not screw off it fits into the slot, however you can remove the top then put the liquid into a spray bottle and use it that way. Just spray and then wipe with the dry swiffer or what works great is to buy microfiber cloths and use them on the swiffer instead of the pads.
On my wood I use the Bella wood spray then wipe with a microfiber mop works great.

On the tile I only use vinegar and very hot water when wet mopping, vinegar does kill germs, I do have a shark steam mop it gets plain water only.

I bought a package of micro-fiber cloths in the automotive department of WalMart.

I use those in my regular dry swiffer as a mop cloth.

You could use whatever cleaner you want and apply it to the cloth or directly to the floor, then put a dampened microfiber cloth in the swiffer. You can pop them right in the wash when you are done. They are very handy for all sorts of cleaning from floors to windows and last forever!

I have refilled my Swiffer bottle different times, and I have not had a problem with it leaking. I need to refill mine again as it is empty. I just put in whatever I have on hand. I have the Rubbermaid one upstairs and it has a bottle that you can put anything in.

The top of a Wet Jet bottle isn't mysterious. It unscrews. I've been refilling mine since I bought the mop. I think I'm on my 3rd bottle since I damaged one opening it, the second cracked from refilling about 20-30 times but now I have a bigger bottle. They increased the size of them since it first came out.

And yes you can use the solution with another mop if you want. I'd suggest you just put it into a squirt or spray bottle and it'd be much more convenient to use. That's what I used in the kitchen until I bought the knockoff of the Wet Jet. Well, still do since it doesn't work as well as the Wet Jet for spraying.

I love my Swiffer WetJet,the bottles of antibacterial cleaner cost $5-$6, but they last for weeks. The trick to getting the top off is to boil about an inch and a half of water in a pan, then dip the bottle upside down in the water for about 20 seconds, then use a potholder to unscrew the cap. You can then refill with vinegar water or lysol and water or whatever you like. Once you get the cap off the first time, it will be easier to remove the next times. The pads cost about a buck a piece, but I've found generic in my local RiteAid for less. Good luck whatever you do!

Just snip the bottom ring and it'll unscrew like any bottle. Or just use a good pair of pliers (carefully) and remove the ring when it's off.
