II. What's black, white & black all over?
Comments (14)I think that the first one (black, white, red) is "contemporary" and they were going for a certain amount of post modernism, and keeping a restricted palette. It's hard to say what it looked like with furniture but I would say the furniture was also black white and red and maybe other primary color. I think it's kind of a Patrick Nagel Poster come to life. The second one, on the surface, sounds the same, but is really a lot different. I would call it a sort of "High Glamour Contemporary" more in a "disco" inspired kind of way. It's not postmodern although some of the elements have roots in post-modernism. I have an idea of what sort of person wants something like this. I had a friend who had a client who came home from the nail salon one day and wiggled her heavily tipped and manicured talons at him and said "I want my Dining Room to look like this". Personally I could deal with the first house on some level, because it's a relative "blank" except for the Memphis-y wallpaper and the bathrooms. I would be extremely uncomfortable in the house in this post. I do think the kitchen in this house is more successful than the one in the first house, which just looks sort of tired and non-committal with the grey instead of black....See MoreDAT #6: Black and White and Gray All Over
Comments (51)Cawaps, nice dining room. The patchwork tile and the photo art make the whole room! In your second one, it is amazing how green Comfort Gray looks! PBH, I really like the nursery. It is cute and fun even in black and white. It is an awesome idea for someone who doesn't want to find out the baby's sex in advance, and then add accent colors after the baby is born. They say babies love black/white contrast patterns because they can see them before their vision fully develops. Great artwork! Crl, love the western room. It definitely references the West without all the cliche stuff. I can see that room looking right in many kinds of houses. Beverly, that is my favorite room of yours so far. Love that oyster mirror, and the cabinet, side table, and rug. It looks very liveable. Patrick, thanks for the suggestion, that would be a good challenge. I am keeping a list of suggestions, and just randomly picking one each week. All ideas are welcome! Kittycatpaws, I like your room. The wallpaper is really cool, but I do think it would give me a headache :-)...See MoreIs the gray walls and white kitchen cabinets trend still on?
Comments (30)Hi Kate, We live in NYC area, go to several open houses a month, many are multi million dollar properties. On this end the answer is "no." Grey is very popular here and sends a mental note to perspective buyers that the property has been updated. Anything that is beige screams "builder" and all white walls translates to "landlord-rental paint" Currently, buyers here shudder at anything in the orangy-red colors. I've heard countless people mumble at open houses "we'd have to redo the floors" when presented with outdated, bright orangey colored wood floors. White kitchens and subway tile is received with relief and enthusiasm. Having said that, "grey" comes in so many different shades that it's easy for everyone to find one they like. Agree with everyone above though, find what you like and go with it! We have lots of grey in our home and love it, but our grey is in paint only and at that, on accent walls. I could easily have it changed in a heartbeat....See Moreare white kitchen cabinets still a trend as we move toward 2023 ?
Comments (33)@RoyHobbs theres nothing wrong with the quality. painted cabinets dont stand a chance against a slammed drawer (that has a metal spatula sticking out) by a teen boy -- Instant ding/chip that shows. Same with dishes done by said teen or husband or a 5 year old running around with toys. Water will end up places due to carelessness, if I'm not there to clean up it'll sit- paint is not water proof especially at joints that expand and contract with the seasons. Grabbing drawers over and over with nails hitting the front of it also damages the paint. I'ts called life. Maple cabinets with a stain are NOT as noticable as white with a teeny speck of chipped paint. again most people dont care, but it bothered me. I am wondering though about your magical cabinet paint...., post some close up pics of your drawer openings, and under the sink, garbage pull out handle, and cabinet door openings that you stash your plates... lets see how 18 years has held up. 😬 PS Ive been to several friends houses who also have white cabinets, all different brands, guess what, same issues as I mentioned. 🤣...See Morekitschykitch
