It was a trick and I fell for it!

I'm driving us home from Sam's Club in Bentonville, AR and as we're exiting the parking lot area, approaching a side street, a bird runs out across the street, flapping it's wing just a little bit. It was a killdeer and I rarely see them around here, so that was nice. And it stopped, right in front of me, continuing to attract my attention and making me worry a bit about the line of cars behind me, but no way was I going to run over that bird. I peered out my side window, hoping to see her cross the rest of the way when suddenly Woody says "look to your left!" And I did. And I saw, much to my delight, 2 tiny little baby killdeer and the other parent. Oh. My. GOSH! Were they ever cute. And so little, they had to get up a curb that was twice as tall as them and they had no problem manuevering it, they just kind of walked up it, using their little clawed feet. Mama had done a really good job of making me look at HER and not notice them. Thank goodness Woody spotted them. They were up and over and safe and we were able to move on, even though I just wanted to stay and watch them.

This just made my day. I haven't seen baby killdeer since I was a kid in WI where we saw them all the time.

This isn't my photo, but you can see how adorable they are for yourselves. Size-wise- picture a walnut on long legs. THAT little and oh, so cute!

Typical killdeer trick, act wounded, distract possible prey from the nest or babies.... she did it so well!
