and I'm nervous about my butcher block island! It's really beautiful, and that's the problem. I'm afraid to use it! We got the oiled finish so that we *would* use it, but I can't bring myself to make that first ding. I oil it lovingly and I don't want anything to happen to it. But this isn't the way my family lives - we have three little kids and my husband and I are both good cooks who love cooking. Should I just walk up to it with a big knife and hack it? Should I drop a glass of red wine on it? Should I serve the kids blueberries without placemats? Has anyone else had this problem?

(Yes, I know this is ridiculous, and I AM laughing about it, but still, there's no red wine or blueberries anywhere near the thing...)
