Your best decision--worst?

Don't we all look back at our decisions and applaud ourselves for some and kick ourselves for others. One of my best decisions was to finish grad school before having children because I became a single mother and my education made it possible for me to support them. Bad decision--marrying at 19--to wrong man.

Best: Taking up scuba diving. We've travelled all over the world to pursue this hobby.

Worst: Not moving right after marrying DH. Independant of family!

One of the best: Asking my girlfriend to marry me 27 years ago - feels like yesterday!

By far the worst: agreeing to let her mother move in with us 6 years ago - feels like 100!

I regret not taking any before pictures. But it was a standard wire shelf walk in closet with the same ceiling lamp. There was also a healthy purge of items from the before as well. I did this reno from an Easy Closets online design and it turned out great. I added 12v COB style LED strip lighting to eliminate the little dots you get from normal LED strip lights. The pull out hamper on an angle I would change to a drawer (you can see we opted to keep using the plastic ones). DIY FYI - those big pieces of wood are heavy and can be tight to get into place like the top shelf running the entire length of the closet. Not much room to maneuver but can be done. You may scratch your newly painted walls a bit in the process. Get the spackle and paint ready.

seasiderooftop I'm super excited for your success. You are right about NO WATERING for the 1st month, until soil is dry out if COVERED UP completely. Here's an excerpt on Cheryl Netter's baggie-method for her zone 5a, Colorado. http://www.cnetter.net/rose_tour/rose_cut.html " To score the cutting, you can use a knife, pin (or even a sharp fingernail) and scratch just through the surface to the pith underneath. The cutting needs the leaves to produce roots, but those under the soil will just rot. Fill a gallon zip lock baggie 1/4 to 1/3 full with moist (not wet) STERILE loose potting mix. I use 1/2 Peter's potting soil and 1/2 perlite or vermiculite. If you use a powder such as Rootone, dip the end of cutting into rooting compound and then knock the excess off until just a thin coating is on the cutting. Poke a hole into the soil in the baggie where the cutting will go. Carefully insert the cutting a couple of inches into the hole. Once all the cuttings are inserted, gently squeeze the soil in the baggie by placing your hands on each side and pushing in until the holes are closed up and the soil is making good contact with the cuttings. Use 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water. Gently pour a tiny amount of this water right at the point where the cutting sticks into the soil. This helps the soil stick to the cutting and removes air pockets Inflate the baggie by blowing into it and zip it shut. Put in bright, indirect light - if it gets direct sun it will cook. If any leaves drop from the stem, you can remove them and reinflate the baggie. Once you are convinced that the cutting has enough roots, unzip the baggie about an inch. Unzip a little more every day for about a week. Some will show roots by the end of ten days, others will take more than 6 weeks. If the cutting is still green there is hope. Don't use diseased cuttings. If the soil is too dry, the cuttings will shrivel, if it is too moist they will rot and turn black." Just making sure that I select healthy hardwood cuttings that are cut cleanly at 45* with a very sharp knife. I lightly peel off a bit of skin 2 to 3 inches from the base and then insert the cutting min 4" in the soil. I do not use any rooting hormones. I do not trim the branches / shoots too much. Watering has to be controlled. In winters, watering more could rot the cuttings whereas there are less chances of dehydration. Watering less is better. I plant my cuttings in a bed next to a wall in my lawn.... in open. But this is what I do in a very different climate where the temp in winters does not go down below -2*C, that too for few days only and it does not snow. Thick hardwood cuttings have enough moisture of their own to sprout. Regarding Cheryl Netter's using Peter's Potting soil for her baggie-method: Since Peat moss is acidic at pH 4, some brands add dolomitic lime to supply calcium and magnesium. Peter's potting soil has bark ash (alkaline), which supplies calcium, potassium, magnesium, and all trace elements. Also granite sand has phosphorus & potassium (good for roots). Metro Mix also has bark ash, and is used in greenhouse veggies seedlings. Peter's Professional Potting has: Canadian sphagnum peat moss, vermiculite, granite sand, bark ash, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and other minerals, wetting agent pH at 5.8-6.8 The below link detailed the ingredients in popular brands of potting soil. A good one: Realizing we didn't *have* to remain in our 'starter home' (after 30 years). Also glad we built all new in a nicer, quieter town.

A bad one: Refusing to over-ride my DH's refusal to take my mother into our home during the year she was dying of leukemia. (He regreted it too. He loved her, but he has been terrified of illness since a difficult childhood.)

Worst: Not pursuing my dream of going to advertising/art school. My parents wouldn't have any part of it, but I should have got a student loan and went anyhow.

Best: Not sure I've made that one yet. lol

Worst decision: Rushing through my childhood. Wanting to grow up so fast; got a job and married TOO early. My life was like the movie "13 going on 30". Just wanting to be an adult and missing the fun kid years.

Oh, and smoking. I started smoking because it made me feel mature. Yah, now I have emphysema. That was a dumb decision.

Best decision: My 2 ex's. Even though the relationships didn't last, I learned so much from them. Each one taught me something different about life and myself. Both are amazing in their own way and I'm different because of it. I've become stronger and more resilient. I've learned to treat people better and not take advantage of situations. I learned that I'm best being single with 2 dogs, but grateful for the experiences.

Best - going to college with a career goal of doing something that would prevent me from ending up financially dependent on a man

Worst - nothing really comes to mind - I've been kind of dumb at times but it wasn't really a case of "decisions" it was more a case of being immature

Best - Leaving a banking career after 12 years as it was killing me with the stress. (Although if I had been able to stick it out my retirement fund would sure be a lot healthier than it is now)
Worst - not buying a piece of property in my little home town when I received an inheritance in the 80's.

Best: Going to college & having a career, then retiring young enough to thoroughly enjoy it.

Worst: Selling our mobile home to my sister when she was in a bad situation, along with a long list of other things I did trying to help her out from her bad decisions.

Lots of bests--sticking it out in college and earning my degrees. Designing a financial plan and savings program with my new DH 45 years ago and sticking to it. That let us put 3 kids through college who graduated debt free.

many bests, as i am ultra analytical/critical of each and every decision lol. a few are: buying my orlando house on my own 10 yrs ago, before the real boom, starting a 401K at 19, moving to orlando 13 yrs ago, taking a leap of faith meeting my now dh thru the gardenweb lol.

worst probably would be that i worked my way thru college, instead of getting loans. i was influenced by my parents' opposition to a loan of any sort (equaled financial weakness to them). i would have had a real college experience but then who knows how my life might not be the way it is now (which i am very very happy with:-))) ~ liz

Best~~~~~~~~~ buying a one story house,really loving that decision these days,now that i'm in my 70's with bad knees and dh has a bad back.Actually buying this house period was the best.We were young,dumb and knew nothing about the process.DH was still in the marine corps,and we knew we wnted to retire here in S.Ca.This house is a ranch,we paid 12,500.00 for it,has a big front and back yard ,with an ocean view,and a canyon behind us that's enviromentally protected.We've been in it for 43 years this coming july.

Worst~~~~~~~~~Can't think of any.

Best - living within our means

Worst. Listening to hubby when he said I didn't need to work because he made plenty of money. Now when it is getting closer to retirement age, I know that was a big mistake.

I moved down here for the job and for love.

I have an excellent job, one that is far better paying than anything I would be able to find were I still living back home.

But I really, really don't like it down here.

The best decision...breaking up with my boyfriend at 22 and leaving home to become a flight attendant then finding the man of my dreams 3 weeks after I started flying...That was 32 years and one marriage ago...

I can't think of any bad decisions...I know I've made some...but I've got a terrible case of CRS right now!

best decision.. probibly sticking with hubby of 40+ years, even through troubled times..and living conservative,with in our means ( for the most part..)
as for bad, nothing really comes to mind, I believe we experence things in life for a reason.
