copper pipe joints came loose

We are in a house built about 1962 that has copper pipes. During a recent remodel, as our contractor was demolishing our old kitchen, a joint in the water pipe in the kichen popped loose. He had applied almost no pressure to it and in fact remarked that it could have come apart at almost any time.

Today he found the same condition on another joint, this time in a bathroom. He found the problem when he starting pulling things apart to figure out the source of water that damaged new flooring. When he examined the joint, he realized that this was the same thing that happned in the kitchen.

We have a water softener. Could that be part of our problem?

The contractor told me about a service that goes in an coats the inside of copper pipes to prevent problems such as this. Is that something we should consider doing? I have no idea what that might cost. Now I'm concerned about other joints that could pop loose.
