roof under deck, help asap!!!!!!!!!

This is gonna be rushed because I need advice FAST! Just had our elevated (12 feet high) deck covered by a screen porch, the contractor was going to cover the joists under the deck with the soffit vinyl siding so there would be ventilation and would aid in making the patio below dryer. The workers mistakenly used regular vinly siding, not the kind with all the slits. They are telling me that this will be fine, that the roof over the deck and the screens on the sides won't let in enough water to be a concern, plus there is an opening under the deck at the front that lets air in for circulation. I'm concerned about having it all enclosed underneath except for opening which runs the width of the deck, about 12 feet and is 6 inches wide... are they correct that the screens and roof will make the water a non issue?

twisted limbz,

I understand that you closed in your elevated deck with screen walls from the deck floor up to the roof. Was the proposed soffit panel that wasn't installed to bug proof the floor? Why did you decide to close up the joist bottoms with soffit panels anyway?

Hey John, I haven't been by in a while. I am in the process of cleaning my 3-4 year old ipe/garapa deck. Oh my gosh. Hardi Plank install starts in two weeks. I see that you never use a pressure washer. I have the oxalic acid. Is scrubbing the dirt the only safe way to clean? **** Deck is great - the local architect saw it a few weeks ago, he asked where I got those ideas (woods etc). From the photo, it appears that the roofing material is a low end composition. The folded over piece is evidence that the seal tabs didn't and the wind got under it. The deteriorated condition of the shingles usually doesn't occur for fifteen years or so. Should the roofer not satisfy you contact the mfg.

What is not confusing is that you will require greater support beneath the very attractive enclosed back room. Is there a door to the lower level to the side of the cute play house? If so, you need some thoughtful advice from your local landscape adviser, or send me your engineer's plat for further advice, also at no charge, as you need help, pomajzir, as you appear to have given little thought to the ground level, rear yard development for the kids and adults, which needs some regrading to be useful below and attractive from the windows above. How about a slide from the lowest stair landing, for example? I am happy to see that you did not have just one straight stairway, all the way from deck to turf. I'll tell you ray HVAC wasn't my trade of choice, it wasn't even in the top 30 list, it just happened and I couldn't wait to move on. Personally I think the trade sucked with no sense of achievement and just became basic hard work, so I moved into other trades, but again learned they also became basic unrewarding jobs with only a pay check. No more rewarding than hauling hay or standing on an assembly line to me so I moved on. Do you really think I spent my life at Baylor doing that job? I've never worked at one place longer than 4 years in my life with exception to the last 20 before retirement and it wasn't a trade. My real passion started in 1975 when I enrolled into the university of Kentucky to major in chemical and electrical engineering so I could help develop sustainable alternative sources of energy inspired by the oil embargo of 73-74. The goal ended when I discovered my level of intelligence was par, but I had a problem with retention and attention. I moved to Texas and enrolled into a HVAC technician program which at the time was where many college rejects and laid off blue color workers went at the time. After years of learning and working in many trades I realized I never felt satisfied with any and was only pulling a cart. I was smart enough to not want to pull a cart but knew I wanted to ride the cart. Riding the cart would give me the freedom to follow my passion so I made drastic changes in my life and moved again. What I did for the last 20 years before retiring put me on the cart but I'm still not satisfied. I'm still obsessed with my passion from 1975 and still working on sustainable alternative energy and the answer is everywhere (another topic). I'm glad you receive satisfaction from what you do ray, but to be frank you do not impress me, and to be fair I am nothing to be impressed by either. People who are impressive contributed more to humanity than one who learned the basic principles of refrigeration and installing air conditioners. People will never remember what you say but always remember how you made them feel, so good or bad you may remember this. Get off your narcissist highchair old man and realize when you retire all you have is time to the day you die. It's worthless if nothing is done with the time and if you die a rich old man it's a disgrace if both were wasted without giving back. Your opinion is worthless, there are 7 billion in the world to choose from so back off on the all mighty Ray rants on how valuable your opinion and time is. Porch Guy, thank you. Actually the deck was wide open without a roof with a southern exposure and was too hot to use in the summer here in SC, so we decided to enclose it. It was surrounded by the house on the rear side and 3/4's on the right side. Underneath is a patio and the roof will also serve to make that usable during any rain. And yes, you are correct, the contractor stated that it would give the underside a more finished appearance as well as offering a tad more bug protection. Initially he had wanted to use the regular solid soffit to finish it but I was worried about totally enclosing the joists, thus he proposed the vented soffit. Well, as they finished the job yesterday was when I noticed the solid being used. The joists are totally enlosed now except for that vented area right towards the front of the deck. It actually looks fantastic from underneath now, and am leaning towards trusting him that it won't collect standing water now that it's enclosed above. He states that the water that does get thru the screens will be very little.

John: there was one reason, and one reason only that I was "asking" and not "demanding" for fast help... he was standing there with his hand outstretched and asking for the final payment while telling me I had nothing to worry about now that there was a roof and screens protecting the deck. I would never be so rude as to waltz in here and DEMAND info. from souls wiser than I, from the people that give advice freely and only to help out those of us who are ignorant in such matters. I was in a pickle and hoped that I could get a bit more info. while I held off paying him the final installment.

Again, thank you, and I would still appreciate any advice.

As long as you have overhangs on the roof along with some kneewalls you should be fine.
