What type of faucets would you buy for bathroom?

In most bathroom design books, I see 3-piece faucets with a spigot and 2 faucets.....one for hot and one for cold. In fact, most people I know also seem to have this arrangement in their bathrooms. Why is this? In most kitchens it seems people are going with one handle to control the temperature.

I'd love to hear what you consider to be the advantages and disadvantages of a one-control vs. a separate hot/cold faucet in the bathroom.

For bathrooms, I've come to prefer separate 1/4-turn handles. I've found I can nudge them slightly for adjustment while the water's running more easily than I can the single-lever versions. I've found I can do this very quickly with even the back of my hand without smearing them with soap or whatever else I may have on my hands at the time. This wasn't true with the old washer-sealed handles but it is with the more modern 1/4-turn versions.

For kitchens, I prefer single-lever design with pull-out faucet.

Perception, marketing and different price points. For bathrooms, narrow spread (single piece over three narrowly spaced holes) goes with big box store "value". And that's different from using a true single hole, which is minimalist and considered high end (similar to kitchens).

3 piece separate units are perceived as higher end. Their higher price and greater selection in finishes and styles bolsters that perception.

To illustrate, we bought a Kohler pedestal sink from home depot that came with a narrow spread. At dealer showrooms we saw the same sink, but with wide spread holes (to support the purchase of wide spread faucets.)

Does it HAVE to be a quick remodel? I ask because you say "master bathroom" which suggests maybe there is another bathroom in the house. If that's the case, then I'd really look at your absolute needs and see if you can take a little more time to make certain you're happy with the end result. Personally, I'd take a little time (maybe a day or even two) and decide what general look I want. Use pictures online from sites like Houzz or this site and find the aspects you like. Come up with a solid layout (maybe it's essentially what you have but swapping a shower for the tub) as everything goes from there. And decide on a general look (tile colors, accents or no?, painted or stained vanity, counter material, light fixture type/placement, etc) and go from there. I'd then take another day or two and run to actual tile stores (not big box stores) and bring home all the samples I liked. In case you're wondering, I have a giant stack of samples in my basement from doing this myself. Tile is one of the first things to go in, so you want to have that picked out as soon as possible (especially if it has to be ordered). Then while mulling over the tiles (put them in the room if possible or at least in a nearby room) and picking out favorites, I'd hit up plumbing showrooms and do some research on plumbing fixtures. Pick out your shower fixtures so that they can rough in the plumbing in the shower. You can take a little more time with toilet and sinks and faucets, especially if you generally know what you want. They can be installed after the tile. I'd probably then hit up granite yards (or whatever counter material you want) and bring home a lot of samples again. I'd put those with my favorite sample tiles and mull over until I found the ones that worked best for me. I might hit big box stores for vanity options or maybe check out the cabinet maker that did your kitchen (assuming you replaced cabinetry). There is absolutely no reason you have to rush on the non-fixed items like mirrors, towel holders, etc. A bathroom can be perfectly usable before you have these picked out and installed.

Hello, We are just going through the issue of a chandelier over a tub. Different electricians had different opinions; not even the contractor knew the "right" answer. My advice is to call your inspector; they know which version of the code they are using and they are the best source for an answer. Long story short, I can have a chandelier that hangs no more than 15 inches from the ceiling. What this means for me is that I will go with a flush mount crystal "chandelier". It won't be the beautiful hanging chandelier over the freestanding bathtub that is so often seen in magazines that I truly wanted, but I will get the look and still be within code for our area. If I hadn't been able to install a chandelier over the tub I would have installed a damp rated can, and then make a capiz shell hanging to surround the light so it looked like a lit chandelier but actually wasn't. Corbett also carries capiz shell chandeliers but they tend to be a bit pricey. If $$ is no object give them a look... Good luck...and call the inspector so you know what will pass the bar in your area!

AFAIK - if a company doesn't have a Nexus in the state, they don't have to collect state / local sales taxes. As a programmer, I deal with this every day - check out AVATAX.com (maybe Avalara). As a CPA I also deal with this occasionally. Just because a business is not responsible for collecting the tax doesn't mean that consumers are not responsible for paying it. This is a common misconception, sales tax is actually an abbreviation of "sales and use tax." Businesses are responsible for collecting sales tax, but consumers are responsible for remitting use tax. The use tax is basically a tax on any item that would have been taxed were it purchased through a local/state sales tax collecting entity that you didn't pay sales tax on (each state will have slightly different wording). Many states that also have a state income tax (22 of them, mine included) have a line on your state tax form for payment of use tax, and you sign your tax forms under penalty of perjury. Historically states have not bothered with use tax, however states are starting to change. E-commerce is simply becoming too large to ignore, business to customer use tax losses exceed $15 billion and that is nothing compared to business to business e-commerce.

It's a crazy mix. Why? Because we wanted certain features(local water conservation codes), and we also wanted to save money, and we also wanted it to look pretty... Little did we know. So: diverter/ handle in the shower is Delta, shower head is Kohler, hand held shower thing is Brizo(which is Delta line I guess?), tub faucet plus telephone shower and vanity faucets are Signature Hardware and I expect them to be a huge headache even though they are cute.. I forgot what brand is this thingy-magingy that holds the shower head in the shower:) It might be Delta or Kohler. We had to look for it too, for inadequate amount of time. This brand has only size X in stock, while you need size Y; and that brand-has only different finish in stock...Tiresome, to say the least. If I only knew how much energy and time it will take to put together this stupid polished nickel puzzle, I'd just order an expensive set I loved right away. We still had to tweak, return parts, order parts (not exactly our fault but there was a hiccup with measurements, on the builder's part), and lost some money on that too. And maybe it even wouldn't be polished nickel. Don't know why we thought polished nickel is readily available in every model and arrives the next day..))) The reality is very very different. In short. Don't do it. Don't be like inexperienced us. Health is more important. Just order everything at once and make sure you like it. You'll pay more maybe, but save on Advil..)))

...I forgot to mention that the "same" Kohler sink (except for hole spacing) was also triple the price.

Asolo......good point. I've never had what you call '1/4-turn' handles. It does seem you'd be able to push or pull using the back of your hand or wrist. That's the style we prefer anyway, but I was just wondering if we'd be happier with the style with only 1 control, like we plan to get in the kitchen. And I agree, we're going with a pull-out sprayer in the kitchen.....definitely! Thanks for your ideas.

homebound.....fortunately, since we're doing such a huge renovation, we're getting builder prices on all of our plumbing fixtures from the higher end plumbing stores. So far we've been happy with the prices they've quoted us. Overall though, I'm quite amazed at how much faucets cost in general. Personally, I don't care what is considered high end or low end. :-) I just want good functionality, and I'm trying to decide what would work better for us. I've never had 1 control in a bathroom. I've always had separate hot/cold faucets. But they've been the knob style, and I hate them. Perhaps the newer styles would work better for us.
