The long-time essential tool is the annual book (or online site) "The Writer's Market." It lists all (or most) publishing venues for different types of book placement--fiction, poetry, children's works, etc. It also tells how to prepare manuscripts, find an agent, etc.

Marita is right. Your friend needs to get the newest copy of "The Writer's Market". Each pubslisher's listing will have their guidelines for transcripts. Some only want certain types of stories or stories for certain ages/ect.

She might want to look into lulu.com. You can get books published there and listed at amazon.com and Barnes & Noble, etc.

Writer's Market is the gold standard in the industry. I would be very leery of self-publishing, POD (print on demand), or a vanity publisher. Just my two cents...

Copyrighting is simple. First you automatically own a copyright even if it's not registered but you should register it. You simply file a form. If your friend plans to do a lot of writing and wants to copyright it all, then you can save up a bunch and copyright them all together as a composite work.

A couple simple precautions to help protect is to email the work to yourself and keep the file. But it's also a good idea to put it in a well-sealed envelope and mail it to yourself. Do not open it. Place it in a safe spot in case of copyright infringement. This would help establish that you were in possession of it on the postmarked date or before. The other person would have to prove an earlier use if they claimed it as theirs. Not too likely to happen but just an extra precaution.

Gosh, people here know so much! When I read the title of this thread I was going to suggest getting elected governor, messing around, resigning. THEN your book will get published. LOL
