Hot water at faucet

Hello all. Ok, I have a strange problem that I cannot make sense of.

Firstly, I have a one story home that had the hot water heater re located up into the attic long ago (in case it matters)

When ever I turn on the hot water at any faucet in the house, it takes up to 30 seconds to get hot water. Ok, that I think is probably normal. BUT, once I have hot water coming out of the faucet, and I turn off the faucet, in a matter of around 10 seconds, if I turn on the facuet again for hot water, it is already coming out cold and I have to wait another up to 30 seconds.

How is this possible? How could hot water in the line leading become cold in a matter of seconds. I live in hot Florida.

It makes no sense to me. please help with any advice.

Makes me wonder if that hot pipe could be running through an AV vent tht would cool it down. Or if somehow there is a hot and cold line connected together. If you run the hot for a while it overcomes the cold water???? Definitely doesn't sound normal and especially, as you say, in Florida.

Yes, when I run the hot water facuet it always ends up coming out very hot.
What is an AV vent? Air Conditioning?

All the pipes I assume run through the attic. there are no basements here in this part of Florida.

This is a strange on, I know. but there must be a reason.

To start, make sure that the power is off to the heater. You will burn out the elements quickly if you introduce air and the power is on. The normal thing to do is what you have tried, to open the drain and then open a hot water faucet to allow air in so that the heater will drain. What commonly happens is that the drain on the bottom of the heater becomes clogged with the same crud that you are trying to get out of the heater. Replacing it with a full flow ball valve can help... but that often gets into more than the average person wants to do. How old is this heater?

the above post is spam. serawyn, the answer is no, to the specific question in your post. the answer is yes, to the general question in your thread title. look underneath any instahot (IHW) faucet; you will see three pipes (or three hoses). But, a water filter faucet does not have three pipes or hoses. - ask in a plumbing forum to get more information.

Are you getting cold water or hot water to your outdoor sprinklers? Do you have a mixing valve at the hotwater heater? If so, try turning it off temporarily to find if it has any affect on the problem.

I have exactly the same problem. I have no idea how the air gets into my hot water lines . I recenlty installed a new hot water tank and its a simple one for one.I never had this problem before but now each morning I have nasty burps at the faucet I first use . Its great for the rest of the day but only in the morning do I get the trapped sputtering air. I do have an existing Vacuum relief valve attached to the cold intake line to the Hot water tank and itys probably 25 to 30 years old there is no leakage but could this somehow be allowing air into my hot water tank.? I am also scratching my head.

Some faucets when turned off will leave the hot and cold lines partially connected. If hot water is then used somewhere else in the house, hot water pressure drops slightly below cold water pressure and cold water flows thru the faucet back up the hot water line.

That is a problem with single lever faucets. When they stop functioning properly, that is. I don't know of any faucet that is supposed to be partially connected when shut off.

To locate the malfunctioning faucet, close off the hot and cold supply valves to each faucet, one at a time, until you locate it. Many times it's the washing machine valve.
