Which species hardwood floor? opinions
Comments (15)Thanks so much! I am really happy I went with waterlox. The look is just so much more natural. You know how poly and other floor finishes lay on top like a sheet of plastic? Waterlox doesn't look like that. It soaks into the wood so you can still see the grain and pores in the wood. Its kind of hard to explain, but the look is fantastic. When you first apply waterlox and for the first week or two, waterlox is darker than it's final color. As the polymers set up, it lightens. As far as the odor, it is STRONG. I used a $25 vapor respirator from lowes to apply mine and it blocked all odors. You will need to be out of the house for at least 24 hours after the last application. Dogs too, since their sense of smell is even greater than ours. And you know about wearing socks, not bare feet due to the oils, right? Just for a week or so. I'd keep the dogs off it too, unless you can talk them into wearing socks. Here's a picture taken after the 2nd coat. Although I heard white oak can look a little grayish, I see no signs of it at all. Maybe it's the waterlox making it look so warm....See MoreHardwood floor vs. engineered hardwood?
Comments (27)Choosing the right flooring type isn't enough for your living condition. You will have to consider the types of cut: flat sawn, rift and quarter sawn, quarter sawn or live sawn. Quarter sawn and rift & quarter sawn will be best choices, because expansion and contraction is along the thickness of the wood. You will need climate control all year round. 70 degrees at 40 % relative humidity is where you want to be throughout the year. The use of a humidifier/dehumidifier will be needed year round. Although, engineered flooring is more stable than solid. Using the wrong wood specie in your living condition can run the risk of de-laminating with engineered wood. If, the top veneer is more or less stable than it's core and backing. You will experience de-laminating in extreme humidity swings. Take in account of what the engineered flooring is constructed of: mdf or plywood. The width of the flooring will account for how much expansion and contracting also. 2 1/4" strips are the most stable. As you go wider, expect to see more wider seasonal gaps. Proper acclimating is critical, should be performed with a moisture meter. For 2 1/4" strip flooring , sub-floor and flooring moisture should be within 4%. For all other widths 2% moisture differentiation is allowed or should not be exceeded. Don't forget proper expansion gaps, which is the thickness of your flooring, example: 3/4" thick = 3/4" gap. Sub-floor type and condition will affect the performance of wood floors. All this needs to be considered for the proper and successful performance of your wood floors....See MoreWhich comes first, the stair rails and newel post or hardwood floors?
Comments (12)I like Mohawk SmartStrand broadloom. A loop and cut pile gives interest without too much pattern if you want a neutral look. Here is a nice one with lots of color options. Don’t be afraid of going light in tone for nice contrast with wood. Not sure what colors are going into your adjoining rooms. Be good if you know wall colors at least....See MoreWhich comes first? Paint or hardwood floor installation?
Comments (6)In a major rehab we did major wall and ceiling work first. Next was refinish floors with two coats of finish. After that was the trim work, cabinetry etc and the final step was last coat of finish on floors. The problem with doing floors first is you need to cover floors while painting. The finish needs time to cure before being covered if you are doing site finished floors which means all the drops must be picked up at night. If you have prefinished floors, you have to be extra careful covering them because touchup is difficult. Walls are easy to touch up, compared to the work in touching up a floor finish. If you are DIY painters, do the paint work first....See Morepoohpup
