Internet vs. phone book? (for advertising)

I own a small entertainment business and advertising is up for renewal. While I have a website, I spend a few thousand to advertise in several local Verizon phone books each year. The prices increase each year as well. People do find me there and I get business, rightfully so. People also find me through searching the Internet and seeing my website listed. And repeat business & word of mouth has been good.

However, with hard economic times, people aren't spending as much on event entertainment and/or are "shopping around" for best rates. Though best rates don't always get you the best entertainment.

My question is this: if you were looking for entertainment for a kids party, a corporate party, block party, or any kind of event, would you turn to the Internet first or your local phone book? If the Internet, would it be Google or Superpages.com, or just a search on keywords? Do you automatically think to go to the Internet for anything you're looking for no matter what it is (repair, exterminator, etc)?

I'd be interested in hearing from everyone and especially from those who are small business owners to get their feedback on what is working best for them. I need to get the best bang for the buck in terms of advertising and where people go to look for services. With fees so expensive, I have to cut back somewhere.

Thanks.
