Shovel snow off my deck?

Hi, I have a pretty simple question to anyone who can provide info. Question is:

Is it necessary to shovel accumulated snow off my deck? I live in Minnesota and the deck is off the back of my house off the top portion of the house, with a stairway going down to the walkout basement area. This is the first year I've had the house in the winter with the deck on, and I have not shoveled it yet all winter. There is about one foot of the hard crusty snow on it now, so I'm wondering if leaving the snow and weight on the deck is a safety concern. Can the deck safely handle that amount of snow? Or is it mandatory to shovel it off? I guess I don't want to take a chance on the deck giving way...so are all decks built to sustain accumulated snow during the winter? The deck is about 14' x 12' and is fairly new.

Any advice would be appreciated. Do I get the shovel out, or is it not really a concern?

It all depends on how your Contractor built that deck. If its built to code no need to clear the snow at all. John

I doubt the snow weighs more than a bunch of people on it. I wouldn't worry about it.

Oh, Ms. Luna, I'm so glad I am not the only one to talk to their car. I have named mine Miss Margaret, but call her Miss Maggie when she's in a spunky mood (in short galloping down the road rather than ambling and yes, I pat mine on the dash board when we make it through a tough spot or keep encouraging her with "You can make it, come on girl." All I can really offer is my experience with the older Toro electrics. They weren't a hugs sale item, but they had their uses too with very little in failures. Probably one a year came back for a larger model, but many had them to keep up w/ snow for flat roofs, decks etc. and that was their only purpose. They throw snow with moderate moisture content well enough if I recall. I remember demoing one w/ about 2 inches of the slushy stuff and it did work. My concern would be the possibility of overworking or overheating the unit. So used with care, hopefully it will be good money spent.

I found an electric Toro Sno-broom sitting in somebody's garbage pile one morning, so, i took it home, dried it off, plugged it in and:"VOILA" it ran! couldn't understand why it got tossed--until the first snowfall! Probably nothing to worry about. You may already know that snow is an insulator. It will stay very close to 32 under a blanket of snow even though it may be well below zero in the open.

Your local code should account for a normal amount of snow. If you can an EPIC amount of snow for where you live, you'll want to shovel. Use a plastic shovel. My neighbor didn't shovel his, though, and while the snow pile up above his deck railings, his deck was fine once it reappeared in April or May.
