Like you, I have no idea what people are saying most of the time when texting, or even on forums, sometimes.

Having said that, my screen name is an acronym, which I love! LOL

I hate acronyms, but then I grew up military. Example:

"I'm going to go put on my BDUs beause I have CQ duty."

What the heck?! Why not just say, I have to put on my uniform so I can get ready for work? They do that on purpose. But as to internet/texting "short cuts", I also don't like them. It seems equally difficult to convert it to the acronym and then typing it up... maybe I'm just old or maybe it is my background??? But I with ya! Not only that, I feel like everyone has a "dear" husband, daughter, etc. Really? I liked the SWMBO acronym the first time I heard it. I knew the person was joking and that made me smile. Finally someone who can live without trying to pretend that his wife was so dear. And really, he does seem to think the world of her, so no harm.

rob333, you must know that the D in DH, DD,DS, etc. doesn't always stand for Dear. LOL (I can not help myself)

and kayjones, you left out the S in Jasdip. Very important and it doesn't stand for sunny!

I don't tweet and that is part of the reason why! I have no idea what a hashtag something is I know what the hashtag is but why do you have to use it, I don't care to learn. I have way too much stuff cluttering up my old brain now, I have to focus on the important stuff like remembering if I took my meds!
I do us LOL on occasion but I try not to because when I email some of my also older friends they ask me what does that mean most think it means Lots of Love. Which is fine too!

For jasdip, I can't see them any other way except "sunny". The other word doesn't fit them well. Course, that's cause they make it paradise wherever they are.

Hi fellow Canucks, we are in Haldimand County on the Lake Erie shoreline just south of Hamilton and about 20 minutes from Port Dover. Grew up and worked in Hamilton and renovated the cottage when I retired then moved in full time, never new cows were females until we moved out to the sticks.

I can actually send and receive texts on my new phone plan. Not that I text.... I am to lazy to try... calling is so much easier, besides, it is a phone... not a text machine. :)

Honest, mine is just a phone, and honest... I find reading texts tiring.

Welcome SouthernCanuck/Johnny D. Nice to meet you. I'm from south central Pennsylvania. The acronym thing just doesn't bother me. I do do a lot of txting though so maybe that's why. It's just faster to use initials or shortened words. Poor grammar is what drives me nuts.

what's worse i have been guilty of carrying over to hand written messages, as well...i'm your neighbor across the the river...in the detroit area...

Susanjf, spent a lot of time doing business in your area, Clinton Township I think it's around 21 mile, I love Detroit. People believe too much of what they read, Detroit has some of the best ethnic restaurants in North America, and I've been almost everywhere from here to Tijuana and beyond.

I went to my 10 year old grandaughters grandparents day at her school. They had a list of all the acronyms to see how many we grandparents knew. Turned out to be quite funny. I sure didn't know many but my grandaughter knew them all. I don't do the text thing so I don't use acronyms. Sadly our world is changing..

When I got my first PC, I found "boards" where I found many acronyms. Took a while to figure them out, but I wondered who started it, and why? Why not just type a few more letters? But then I am old school, and I don't have any of those must-have gadgets; not even a cell phone. I do use the acronyms.

One that I have seen recently that I had to Google to find out the meaning of is Meh. Huh? Okay, I've only seen it a couple times, but it is so meaningless. It really is not a word, or letters that spell a word. It indicates a lack of interest in the topic, boredom, or get this: a shoulder shrug. Who cares if you aren't interested?

Yea, but SOB can look so, you know, offensive. As long the person just scrolls on by, but doesn't bother to write SOB, I'm happy. Not everything appeals to everyone.

I like acronyms. Saves a lot of typing which can be a PITA.

Welcome, SC, (I couldn't resist that). I'm finding that texting almost forces one to use acronyms, single letters, abbreviated words, etc,to conserve space and cost. What bugs me, though, is poor grammar. I cringe when I read some of it.

Welcome. I am from Windsor but my English Grandparents got married in Hamilton.

I dislike acronyms too. I used to work for TESL teaching ESL and EWP.. When we have Federal and Provincial elections I work in my Riding RO office with the RO and the ARO . I hire the DRO's and PC's. Everything in the RO is an acronym.

My sister uses acronyms often when she's talking to me and assumes I know what they mean. Drives me nuts.

lindalou, sounds like you may be from Buffalo area which is about 2 hours from us. Mom's from North Tonawanda (NT), that was probably the first acronym I ever learned. I actually spent my Sr. year in High School in Nord Tondawander as most Canucks say it.

cherryfix, spent a bit of time in your lovely town adding to your tax coffers by leaving a bit of Canadian cash there in the casino. Actually plan on being there in May for some Walleye fishing on the river.

There's times when abbreviations are needed. If you need to squeeze a lot of info into a 150 character text that's one thing, but a forum is different to me. There's some generally accepted ones that don't bother me but it's the most grandiose of laziness and insult to the person to refer to a supposedly loved child as nothing more than a bra size. Kind of says a lot to me about the person.
