Royal title question

Why was Diana "Lady" Diana, but Kate has been made a Duchess? I know the couple each received several titles... how is it determined which title(s) they get?

As I understand it, the lender's title insurance generally only protects the amount of the loan, or the lender's interest in the property. If you want to protect your interest in the house, should a title problem arise, you will need an owner's title policy. The owner's policy is in effect for as long as you have an interest in the house. Remember, as you pay off a home's loan, your interest amount increases and the lender's interest decreases.

As I understand it, I don't think these words are absolute or all-encompassing. Not like asking if someone is left-handed or right-handed where just one phrase describes it. Divorcee - a person whose former marriage was ended by a divorce. Men are also referred to as divorcees. Single means not currently married. A divorcee without a new spouse can also be described as being single. Someone described as "never married" is also single. Widows and widowers are arguably also "single". Not that it matters.

There is an owner's title policy, which insures the buyer's title to the property, & there's a lender's title policy, which protects your lender from...you. Be sure to read your title policy & consult the title company about any exclusions; don't know if it's still the case, but title companies sometimes 'bound around' problems, which means that they had a big old king's x if a problem arose. For instance, if there were an unresolved homestead issue (such as a former spouse of a former owner) or undocumented resolution of a problem (previous title company failed to record releases at the county clerk's office), the title company handling this conveyance would bind around the issue. meaning that, if a problem arose concerning the former spouse or the unrecorded release, you'd have to go to the title company that had handled the sale when your sellers bought the house! The lender's policy is a buyer expense; you pay for the insurance that protects your lender from any cloud on the title caused by something you've done. For instance, I had a house painter whose paint store had obtained a judgment against him because he hadn't paid his bill; he had to pay the bill & get the judgment released before he could get a house financed. Had the judgment not come to light before closing, the lender's title policy would (let's hope) have protected his lender. so the short answer is... yes, your title company needs to know that the judgment has been paid.

Diana had the title "Lady" because her father was the eigth Earl of Spencer. She would have had that title had she never even met Charles.

Beyond that - I do believe it's right that the Queen chooses/bestows the other honorifics.

From what I have read: the title princess is only automatically bestowed upon those born into the title, such the Queen's daughter, Princess Ann or Prince Andrew's daughters. Diana was, "Diana, Princess of Wales" because her husband was the Prince of Wales and the Queen conferred the title of Princess to her.

My thanks to the one (I forget who and once I've previewed can't go back to check) who filled us in on how this situation works.

One learns new things every day ... should one choose to keep one's eyes and ears open (two of each). And be aware of what's going on with one's emotions and other psychologically-related activities.

And it helps if one keeps one's (one) mouth shut, a substantial portion of the time. One doesn't learn new stuff while one has one's mouth open ... disseminating some of the knowledge that one has (or thinks/claims that one has).

I heard that Kate will become a Princess when Charles becomes King...then she will become Queen when William becomes King.

As I understand it ...

When Charles becomes king, William will probably become the Prince of Wales and Kate will be Catherine, Princess of Wales. (The title is usually given to the male heir to the throne, but it doesn't pass automatically.) She will never be Princess Catherine. As Lynn_d says, you have to be born to that.

By the way, Camilla Parker Bowles is currently Princess of Wales, but chooses not to use the title out of respect for Diana.
