Solar hot water, tankless, gas condensing water heater...?
Comments (2)If you go with any sort of solar system, make sure it has a gas backup and not electric. My energy costs went up $100/month when I added our solar system down here in San Diego. I am now getting it corrected with the installation of a small gas tankless unit, using the solar storage system as a pre-heater. If you're building the home then many of the traditional drawbacks of tankless don't apply to you. You can build in the correct gas line and venting from the start. If I were in your shoes I'd probably go tankless (30 percent tax credit this year -- see the stimulus law or visit www.energystar.gov). If a single unit won't handle your demand then get two. And plumb it with the small tank system (10 gallon) for recirculation and to overcome any sandwich problems. This approach has been detailed in this forum somewhere....See MoreTankless water heater problem
Comments (6)We actually do have 2 shower heads, but only use one at a time. I don't know about the heater showing its heating status--it's in a utility closet near the bathroom so I will check it out next time we use it! It is fed from the cold water line. The bathroom is on the third floor (formerly an attic) and our main water heater is in the basement. We didn't think it made sense to run a hot water line up there because even on the second floor, it takes a long time to get hot water to the bathroom. We had issues with losing our hot water when our basement tenant ran his. So we didn't put it in to save energy, we did it to have a continuous source of hot water for the new master bathroom, and without having to wait 5 or 10 minutes for it to get warm. (Even with the tankless heater we still have to wait a couple of minutes for hot water, but not nearly as long as we did previously.) One other thing I forgot to mention: we previously had the fluctuating temperature problem in the shower as well (i.e., shower would turn cold even when it was the only water running) but our contractor's plumber made some adjustment, which fixed that problem although it's still happening at the sink faucet. I'm really, really hoping this means we just need one more adjustment to get it right!...See MoreWater heater help--gas, electric or tankless??
Comments (6)Jake thanks for the reply. Yes I want the tanks to store the hot water from the desuperheater, but this only works in the hot summer months. You don't get much hot water in the winter months which is 70% of the time. The reason I don't want to use electric because gas is much cheaper to run. I was thinking it may be cheaper in the long run to just buy a powervent gas WH than to do electric. I thought about the combination, as you suggested, with electric to store and tankless to provide the extra heat. My concerns is it is already plumbed for a recirc system and I wasn't sure how that would work with a tankless....See MoreProblem...Tankless Water Heater and Occasional Low Water Pressure
Comments (4)thanks much for this information. yes, we do need to get a bigger tank for the well.... however, this problem has been solved with a pressure valve near the tank. wish i could tell you more specifics...but i can tell you that the installer tried putting in a valve (he heard that this would cure the problem) and it didn't help at all. when he returned after a few weeks, he decided to call rinnai again, and he talked to the right person. he needed a bigger valve of some sort.... installed it... and it fixed the problem! i'm so happy about this.... and we will work on getting the well in check as soon as po$$ible!...See Morejakethewonderdog
