Every weekend here - we have a fair - it sells new stuff - used stuff and antiques . It's called

7 mile fair .There is a puppy booth. They combine breeds to make "Designer" dogs and charge big $$ .

As much as I love going there and petting puppies through a cage - I hate to see them sold this way. People there - buy them on a"WHIM " because they are so cute. I'm not sure if this is a puupy mill or not - they have a website

I love the puppies - but my next dog will be an older rescue dog .....

I see they're calling them "Hybrids" instead of mutts. Had to justify the $800 price tag somehow I suppose.

And there certainly are a lot of inconsistencies. For instance:

Producing HYBRIDS in the agricultural and animal husbandry industries has been done for decades because of their high yields, genetic disease resistance and generally more robust individuals. In dogs, this Hybrid VIGOR (Heterosis) also carries through.

Yet the "T Cup Care" link is an entire page about how fragile they are until 6 - 8 months of age.

Also on that page they say "They are not suitable for households with other pets to contend with, small children,.... "

Yet on the main page, they say

"Whether you are a family with small children or a senior looking for a loving companion we can help you with the selection of Your new friend."

Hybrids = Mutts. First people to mix labs and goldens were the Guide dogs for the blind. Too many of their pure bred pups were experiencing life threatening issues like epilepsy and cancer. With the new blood comes less of these issues. If you want to act on your concerns ask to meet the stud and female dog who the puppies came from, and ask to see the environment they were raised in. If the people selling the dogs refuse, call animal control. The issue might be stopped altogether if their land is not big enough or clean enough or the dogs are not being adequately cared for. Also ask about first shots etc...many questionable back yard breeders wont have the pups wormed or first shots done.

Ornithogalums??? Oh vetivert, you are bad, but Ornithogalum is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of spring chores and getting to work outside, usually in late Feb. Now I realize my question could have and should have been phrased a lot better. How about this? If the Bulb Forum members would submit their (own) pics of plants and blooms grown from bulbs for a new forum picture, what should it be? . Should it be open to anything grown from bulbs? Should it maybe exclude such things that have more 'specific' forums of their own, such as Lily, Tropical, and House Plant? Should it be an individual bloom, or as you suggested, maybe a still life flower arrangement of numerous delectable blooms grown from bulbs? Please 'scuse me for just having tunnel vision and tunnel thoughts of just Daffodils. At any rate, the folks who are having their spring now, can hopefully be trying to get some great pics. Ok...so when does anyone think we could/should start taking picture submissions? Should we wait until late 2010 so glads could be included by those in the US who grow them? Should we wait a full year (or nearly) so the members down under have an opportunity to have another summer blooming season, like for glads? hmmm...what is fairest? I guess before proceeding, I should check with the 'Powers that be' to see for sure if they would be willing to get the pic changed and updated with a pretty pic of our choosing. I hope lots of folks will give their input and in time, post their pics for entry. In doing a search here on the forum, it seems that Tulips and Daffs are the 2 things most often posted about. I imagine though that tulips are most frequently asked about, due to them having problems, or emerging early, or for not blooming a second season when they are thought to be perennials like daffodils. I just wanted to report my results of my experiment. I did containers for the front of my house with carpet of snow alyssum and white cosmos. Only the alyssum germinated. I put all my Cosmo seeds in these containers so it looks like I am going to have to buy white cosmos this year. I did containers for my back patio with petite yellow marigold, cosmic orange cosmos, and royal carpet alyssum. Again only the alyssum germinated. The same marigold seeds that I sowed in separate cups germinated just fine. So I will transplant some of the marigolds into these patio containers. I've never seen the orange cosmos at the nursery, so I will have to look for something tall and yellow/orange to add to the containers. On the bright side - I will not have to buy alyssum.

Shades of Idaho, your cabin sounded perfect. We have a silo and it is on the older side of style. I love the roof and have always dreamed of building a room by raising the roof and wrapping an exterior stairway to the top. We are fairly near a river valley and I am sure the top of that silo would bring it into view. I thought about having windows surrounding the top for 360 viewing. Just a dream though. Nancy, I like the idea of a wood stove. It would be something I'd do down the road, if the warm weather cabin use extended into fall and winter. DH and I were, once again, looking at site location and there is a spot really close to the house that could be used for this shed. Like the idea of having place for water pitcher. Moccasinlanding, love the idea of french doors. keeping the back without windows is a nice option, providing a spot for privacy. I was hoping on french doors so much. We would have to find them used and functional. I do need to do a Craigslist search. There is a lumber yard that sells windows that are returns or miss ordered. I will need to see if they have anything that could be useful for this project. I am thinking that narrow windows would work, the studs are 24" on center instead of the conventional 16". If I got something narrow, I wouldn't have to have structural headers, I don't think, because there would not be any cutting of the studs, only the cladding. I think a row of clerestory windows would be fantastic over the door, especially if I had to use a conventional door instead of french. Several of our sites would allow access to our wifi, and close to the bathroom/shower facilities. The one remote site, way north of the barn, is a good location for real retreat, and a composting toilet would be very handy. The sites close to the house, DH said we could run power to it. Like was done years ago to brooder house. I am not sure about that, as it might be bumping up against code. I want to keep this simple with regards to getting others involved in my business. Thanks you guys for the input it is very helpful in helping keeping me inspired. This isn't going to happen over night thats for sure. So I will be posting on this project now and again over the summer. This next week I will be going on my own week retreat up in Minnesota. I do it yearly. I think of it as my adult "camp" time. I loved camp as a kid. This is a Buddhist retreat, and for most of the 8 days it is in silence. Up at St Johns University in Collegeville, near St Cloud. Magnificent campus!

Jennmonkey, the $30 comment was in the context of the story - that she was always asking for more. I didn't say anything like the rest of what you mention. I don't know where you got it from or why you used it to defend Lori. Lori didn't even say anything like that. I said it to the woman because I paid her $25 for the run, but she was asking for more. There is nothing in this story about the size of jobs. Nor is what Lori indicated that I am wasting money and time when I can do them myself. It came from nowhere except her own intention. NyceFarm, you and Uxorial asked the same thing, which is a good question. Because I never saw her at work or saw a paystub, all I can say is I have called her in the wee hours of the morning only because I knew she was at work. At her house, her husband answers the phone if I call after 11pm to let me know he hates calls at that hour LOL. I wouldn't dare call their house at 1 or 2 in the morning. A couple times she came around 3 or 4am to pick up that morning's deliveries. That's the time she got off work on those nights and came here so as not to have to make the trip again. I'm only 3 or 4 miles off her route, whereas she lives quite a ways away. It was better for her to come at that hour than to come back this way at 8am. Also, she directed me to a website for certification last year. She needed me to download some forms because she didn't have a computer. I realize none of that is proof though. So, I guess the answer is I really don't know, but I can't see all the charades either. LindaKathy, nope she didn't pay cash. She paid by debit card. I expected she would stop at the place and pay, but she preferred not having to stop. I wouldn't ask anyone to use their credit card, but that she did was fine with me. She called with the confimation number and brought the balance of the money the next day, less the $150. This was three weeks ago. Is that you were asking? Kathleen, that makes a lot of sense. As far as being tired, she fell alseep on my sofa or laid down in the boys' room several times after getting off work. One morning, she got off at 7 and was supposed to come here to pickup an order. It was to be delivered at that funeral home two miles from her house. She didn't show up and called around 8 to tell me she fell asleep in the nursing home's parking lot. I could understand that happening, knowing how often I work through the night. However, I don't want to give the impression that she was working so much for me. As I mentioned, business was way down the last year, so I didn't have to call her all that steadily.

There was a similar monthly fair when I lived in Alabama. Most of the people selling were not puppy mills. Oddly, there were some very nice dogs available there. But about the designer dogs; it's a given they are from puppy mills. I find it both funny and sad. The funny part; it just shows that gullible people and their money are often parted. On the other hand, not everyone realizes that they need to study in order to find a dog they can live happily with for the next 15 years. To those otherwise kind, would-be pet owners, I feel sad. And of course for the poor puppies.

This isnÂt really a new marketing ploy. Peekapoos and various poodle and schnauzer crosses have been around for 30 years or more. Mixed breeds or hybrids do sometimes have health advantages over the parents BUT in this case, the advantage is probably negated by the congenital and acute illness found in most puppy mills. Also, itÂs a certainty that the buyers are shopping for ÂcuteÂ and have done no research on breeds suitable for their situations.

Hybrids/Crossbreeds do not mean mutts. Reputable breeders have all the generational information. No guessing there.

No new news in this thread over the one from the end of last month. Depending upon where and how you get your pup it is not a given that Crossbreeds are from puppy mills although, no doubt, some sure are.

This is a discussion that will never have all parties in agreement. That is okay, to each his/her own.

I guess I didn't get my original thought across (Sometimes what goes on in my head - doesn't show up on the keyboard ) LOL
My main concern was about showing and selling puppies at a flea market like this. Kids are poking at them - everyone is sticking their hands in at them ( who knows what diseases they can catch) and I heard so many people talk about buying them "just because they are so cute." I think because they are so expensive - people think they are a status symbol or something. It just seems to me more planning should go into buying a dog.

Just as a PS to this situation .... my niece bought a puppy from them ...it died on the operating table getting fixed. No one will ever know why .... careless breeding ? Just natural causes ? Who knows. She was just out $450 and these puppy breeders said Oh well ...

OOps - didn't mean to go off on a tangent .... I truly hope the puppies that are adopted from these flea markets go to a good home.

True story: I bought a dog at the flea market once, a beautiful little lab/something mix....just a sooner for $10. Named her harley and loved her very much, so did my Mother. Then one day I came home and found her missing. I asked my Dad about her and he said:" I took her to the pound cause she pee'd on the floor". My own father took my dog to the pound behind my back. I didn't go after her cause it was made clear that she could not come back but I just couldn't believe it. My dad committed suicide a few years later(not over the dog) and still today I'm angry with him for thinking so little of me and my dog. Perhaps this is the life many dogs at flea markets will recieve? I don't know but it's sad to see dogs with no home or families to love them. If I could I'd house them all, but I can't so I look away. I think often that if my dad were alive today, I'd go overe to his house and pee on his floor and dare him to do something about it.

((((jcal))))-I'm sorry about your dog.Sounds like your dad had much deeper problems than just the dog peeing on the floor.I hope some day that you will be able to let go of your anger toward your dad and forgive him.
