part of the world? I just finished the book, The Day the World Came To Town 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland. I had heard, seen and read so much about the 9/11 attacks that I wasn't sure I wanted to read any more. I am so glad that I read this book! It was a true story about the planes that had to land in Gander, Newfoundland when the US airspace was closed. What a heartwarming story!

I think Homer Hickman, author of October Sky said it best:

When you read this book, I predict tears in your eyes almost from the beginning, but they will not be tears of sadness or grief. They will be tears of joy and pride for the citizens of the little town of Gander, Newfoundland, who bravely stood up and said to the world, "Today we are all Americans."

I enjoyed the book too. Planes landed in airports all over Newfoundland (and other places in Atlantic Canada), but I think Gander took in the most (they have large runways).

I read the book about a year ago and really enjoyed it also. It's always nice to read about people helping people.

Can't tell from the picture which, but it's either staghorn sumac or smooth sumac. Yes, you probably could propagate from seeds, provided they're ripe, but it is also easy to just dig up a "root sucker" somewhere and move that. Or buy one-they're cheap and easy to find. +oM

Karyn...your gonna have to save the seeds from that double, and see if they will grow from seed..Id love to see what happens ! It sure is pretty ! I wintersowed a lot of the rudbeckias this year..I think that double is just amazing... do you have more buds yet, that may be doubles ?

That style started in the 1830s, in Architecture as "Gothic revival" and had its last gasp in the 1920s in Sears Catalogs under the name of "Baronial". It went with the Tudor cottages and desire to emulate the rich who were bringing back entire castles or the innards of them. That is more elaborately carved than most of the Jacobean revival stuff I have seen. the cheap versions went in for turned, but not carved, legs and scroll-cut ornamentations. Do you know if it was free motion embroidery? If so, you can do it on your old Bernina. You need the darning / embroidery foot, probably among your accessoires. You also need to lower the feed dogs before you start practising. Google free motion embroidery related to both vintage and modern machines, and you will discover a new world! It does require some practise, it's a hobby everyone can adopt, you don't have to have a special ivy league talent. If the embroidery on your linen cloth was free motion embroidery you can't really copy it with the auto functions on an emboidery machine. On the other hand, it is difficult to get exactly the same result as the auto function on an embroidery machine, as they can be very advanced combinasions of staright and zigzag, but in some cases you can get pretty close. Take a look at the video, done on a simple straight stitcher only, threadle machine. Your old Berina is a good machine. Here is a link that might be useful: Video

I read the book too. I really loved it and kept it so I can read it again. It makes you want to travel there so you can meet such nice people!

There was also a movie called "Diverted" made about 9/11 and the role that Gander played. It was interesting for those who live here and could recognize the locations (the hotel in Gander was actually the Holiday Inn across the street from where I grew uphere in St. John's) and the local "extras" and stars. Fun from that point of view.

For those of you on Facebook, there is a site called Newfoundland the Beautiful Province where there are some lovely pictures, almost as lovely as Casey's.

Barbara, my nephew's girlfriend was an extra in that movie (she is studying to be a theatre arts teacher, already has her B.FA and is completing her B.Ed now).

Casey, my cousin was a "cleaner" at the school where they housed the people. It was really strange seeing people I know in the background. We were watching and saying, "look, there's Janet, there's ...., there's..." It was fun.
