Is there anybody in the indiannapolis area that can help my son?

My son is there waiting to start a job tomorrow and he is in the Lebanon area. He is stuck, and broke and hungry.

Poor kid, he really tries hard, and he is a good boy, I just hate when they need me and I can't be there to help. Thankfully he is in a motel, and has a paid roof over his head and a hot shower while he works. He does not get his travel money until Thursday. Does anybody in the area know of a place he might go to get a hot meal. Is there a loaves and fishes in the area or a salvation army depot?

I know it is Sunday, so many of these places may be closed.

He knows nothing about the area, and needs a guiding hand.

Why is he traveling without any credit card or money?
Certainly he must have known that he wasn't getting any travel money until later in the week.
How was he going to buy gas for his car?

You could always call his hotel and have his charges put on your credit card.

Don't use western union to wire him money,too expensive!! You can wire him money thru wal mart for 11.46 for up to 200.00.They will give you a receipt with a # on it,call him ,give him the # and tell him to be sure to have his ID with him when he goes to pick it up.Easy,peasy.

BTW,when you wire thru wal mart it's at the other store instantly.You do need to know the town and hopefully the zip code of the town he's in.Also it's cheaper than overnight mail or western union.

There are a few things to keep in mind here. As Bill suggested, a mix of fescues would probably be the best choice. Now there are several kinds of fescue, but to make it simple let's say there is tall fescue and fine fescue (fine fescues are comprised of many different kinds, but I don't want to complicate things). Tall fescue is definitely more lawn like, whereas fine fescues have very thin blades, almost like coarse hair. If you decide you want fine fescues, and you go the big box store route, always read the contents of the bag. There are many shady lawn mixes that are very similar to Canadian Green out there, which you should probably avoid. If you go the tall fescue route I suggest you bypass the big box stores and purchase a cultivar that does very well in deep shade like 3rd Millenium SRP, Essential, Rebel IV, Falcon IV, etc. Of course you could use both, combining the attributes of both grasses. Now when are you seeding? This spring? Well late summer would be better, but if you are seeding this spring then the area is question cannot be used for at least two months. The seeds will need to be watered daily, by daily I mean lightly at least twice a day, for at least two weeks. You will get better results if you topdress the seeds lightly. Applying starter fertilizer will also help. This is all very basic of course, there are a lot of little details I am leaving out, and to be honest a soil test would be a big help in determining what shape your soil is in, a key to growing good grass. Unfortunately the more you put into it, the better the results will be, but it sounds like there isn't a lot of money, or help for this project. Hope this helps.

I am living the same life, and have been for 6 1/2 years. My stepson is now 15. Believe me, it gets worse as they get older. The shouting is louder and the hygiene problems become unbearable. He has lost his little kid affection for adults, and now he's sullen and rude all the time. Our home is an unhappy place to be, and forget about entertaining friends. I worry everyday that I've created an awful life for my daughter. We've struggled to find a doctor that can help. The pediatrician talks about "counselling" but everytime we bring him to a counsellor, he refuses to talk. We've had an assessment that talked about "indications of ADHD", and then some suggestions for "more structure". Structure helped reduce some of the meltdowns, but it didn't turn a miserable kid into anyone you'd want to live with. We've just taken him to a highly recommended psychologist in a large city for a more in-depth assessment. Hopefully, we get some good advice there. One thing that I can tell you is that I was where you are now four years ago, but without babies. There is a big part of me that's starting to question whether I should have left then, or should leave now. I've devoted a significant portion of my life, and a fortune, to caring for a kid who's a hostile misery. My relationship with my husband has deteriorated and we spend most of our time snapping at each other. It's no fun. I agree with the lady who recommended a special school, especially a residential one. You need to protect your health and raise your babies in a healthy environment. You also need to ensure that you have some enjoyment in life, or you'll end up like me - considering other options.

Behavior #1 - sits in the living room with headphones on and plays video games for 4 to 14 hours. To me that is normal. Not the 14 hours but certainly the 4 hours or longer. Under the same conditions as your stepson, about to be on duty on a submarine, at his mother's house where he did not grow up, no friends in the area, that is exactly what I would expect my son to do. There are 21 year old men who play video games to unhealthy extremes but a 21 year old in the Navy on leave in my opinion is not in that place. Behavior #2 - I must be missing something here. That doesn't sound like eavesdropping to me. He has his earphones on, he can hear you with the earphones on, he laughs at a joke he overhears. That would not bother me and I wouldn't consider it eavesdropping if my son did that. Scratching his privates, monologues, not making eye contact, not saying goodnight or be right back, BSing, awkwardness petting the dog, chewing with mouth full, not waiting till everyone has their food, leaving a messy room, some young men are like this. I have known some awkward young men who turned out to be perfectly nice when I got to know them better. My son does not do these things but plenty of normal young men do. I realize these things are disconcerting to you. In our family we say goodnight or be right back...except my daughter for some reason didn't do this and I just let that one go, not worth it to me to bring it up. I think you are being unreasonable to expect your 21 year old son to observe and fall into that custom. The BSing will probably take care of itself over time as your son spends more time in the Navy. Other Navy men or women will probably call his hand on that one I would think, and that would be way more effective than anything your wife would say or do. The only thing that would really get to me on that one is the pacing up and down during dinner if that's a frequent occurrence. The note thing when he left sounds reasonable to me, at least at his own mother's house. I would expect my kids to write a nice, appreciative thank you note if they were guests in someone else's home but not at my home. If my son was in the Navy on leave, realized he had some things he needed to do and needed to get back to base quickly I would kick his butt for pausing to wake me up or write a long note. I wouldn't expect my son to wake the family up if he needed to leave unexpectedly. Behavior #3 - Your family is gregarious, he is not, he stifles the vibe at your house. You would be doing your daughter a favor if you teach her not to let those things bother her (and you). She has a lifetime of being around difficult people - college roommates, co-workers, possibly in-laws. It would be better for him if he learned how to join in, but it would be a gift to your daughter if you taught her that she cannot control others but she can control herself. It is also a gift to your daughter to learn to be inclusive and draw out difficult people in a way that is not overbearing. Not only is it the kind and decent way to be but also some people earn more money through their excellent soft skills. Behavior #4 - The person causing this problem with your daughter is your wife. As mentioned above, you, your wife and your daughter need to get family counseling for the 3 of you. He is your daughter's half brother, she shouldn't have to *entertain* him very often. Also, your daughter needs to be communicating these issues with her mother if she isn't already doing that. Your daughter sounds melodramatic to me for the situation you are describing. 16 year old girls (boys too) can be real drama queens, even if they were not that way as kids or young teens. Keep in mind your daughter will feed off your feelings and actions and our kids are very, very, very good at sensing what our feelings are even if we think we have kept them hidden. Families are messy, people are messy. This is a golden opportunity to teach your daughter how to deal lovingly, kindly, compassionately with awkward people while still doing what she needs to do to keep her own life reasonable. It is so much better if she has had experience with this before she goes off to college while you are there to act as a sounding board and sometimes a buffer. Sometimes our kids are in stressful, awkward situations that we want them removed from when really those very situations are going to prepare them for something down the road. What if your daughter has a stepson with Aspberger's one day, or a child with Aspberger's. Or a roommate or coworker. If I were your wife I would not sit down and talk to my son about Aspberger's or even much of this behavior you describe and I would embrace family counseling with you and your daughter. If I were you I would couch this to your wife in terms of going to a counselor to learn how to best help your stepson and also to help your daughter deal with this. For one thing it's true, your wife does need to go in order to learn how to best support your stepson and your/her daughter. I know you said previous visits over the years went fine but now they're not. That could be due to a lot of things. Maybe the visits are longer now, in which case you would see more issues bubbling up no matter how delightful he is. Maybe he is stressed from his college difficulties and now joining the Navy, perhaps doubting his path in life. Perhaps before both he and his brother visited together and he was more comfortable then or perhaps having his brother there masked some of his issues. I think your wife is correct that it is not her place and not yours to talk to him about possible Aspberger's Syndrome at this point in his life. It's not your place or hers to ask him to go get evaluated or tested; the time for that was years ago. It doesn't sound like any of you have a close relationship with him. The thing to do now is to build a good relationship with him. He probably really needs your support right now at this point in his life so this is a golden opportunity to build that solid relationship. Welcome him, love him, respect him as a person and a member of your family. If you do that then later on the time will come when you or your wife can broach some of your concerns. I am not hearing that he says mean things or sexually inappropriate things, not hearing that he steals things or destroys things. Not hearing anything about drugs or alcohol, nothing about him offering your daughter drugs or alcohol. Not hearing about him taking your car and wrecking it or constantly hitting you up for money. This does not sound like an awful situation to me, just a situation that is awkward and uncomfortable. You know, your daughter is going to have awkward and uncomfortable situations with family in her future whether your stepson visits or not. What kind of person do you want her to be? If you want her to believe that family is important even if it's awkward or uncomfortable then model that for her. What if her husband doesn't like you, do you want her to expect that her husband will still be thoughtful and considerate to you? If so, then model that for her with your stepson. Last, if I were you I would go to counseling with your daughter and give her some time to talk to the counselor by herself. Your daughter could be melodramatic because she's feeding off your emotions, because she's just going through a drama queen phase right now, because she's upset about something else in her life and projecting it onto this situation. But there could be things she isn't telling you or your wife that are valid concerns. Whatever you decide, I hope and wish the best for all of you. It's not easy knowing the right thing to do sometimes.

I thought all 3 chairs should be swivel and then the "reading" are could be a separate area with both of those chairs swinging toward each other. You could do bookcases in the niche, or a console table with a great piece of art above it. Just depends on what they need and want. Measurements I used have to be verified of course, but I assumed the stairs, entry to the back of the house and that front door/ and indent at front of house all take up square footage. I also put a 9 x 12 rug (dotted line) in Option 3 which would be very nice, because you have more of the tile covered, it anchors the space and gives a comfortable walking path. If they put the TV on that long wall (TIP) MAKE SURE they don't hang it too high. It should be while seated on sofa/sectional, the center of the TV is at eye level. Most hang them too high. Plus there is that drop down ceiling along that wall, so note that for them.

I'm with Patti43....the feeling of not being able to help your child at any age is awful, no matter what the situation. I'm sure there is a reason for not being prepared for this. It doesn't make it any easier for you being so far from him and helpless. I hope you got some food or money to him by now. Good luck to him!

I know Trin..my boys were the same. They never want to worry Mom until you find out the kid isn't eating and has zero $ in his pocket.
Wire him some money, tell him you love him and are so proud of him starting a new job. Then nag him next time you see him! and then hide $$ in his backpack.. Kathy

I feel for you, I would be the same way. We never want our kids to be without anything do we?

You can order Pizza right on line from Pizza hut! I am sure there are lots of other places to do so. Maybe he can find a hotel with a free breakfast. Otherwise maybe have some food delivered from a major grocery store chain. They might be willing to help.

I can't thank everybody enough for all your kind words, and understanding the situation without harshness. I remember well the days of being without a car or a place to call my own. It only made me stronger and more compassionate for others. No one ever wishes for hard times, and I am proud to say that if my son can do nothing else, he is a hard worker, and will go to any lengths to work wherever the work is at. He is not lazy, not even close, but hard times do fall and help is sometimes needed.

I would like to say that there is a K.T angel among us. I won't call anyone out, but I received an email this afternoon that brought me to tears.
This angel has offered to help my son get what he needs until he gets back on his feet. You know who you are and you will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for your kindness.

Isn't it nice to know that there are people here who will help without asking why he is in this situation.
Things will work out for him and he will get back on his feet. He just needed a little assistance for now and he's getting it.
When you talk to him be sure to tell him that there are alot of 'KT aunties' wishing him well!

I just spoke to my son, and wanted to share this.
He wanted to know how I knew so many people all over...I did my best to explain the K.T. and all the people that reached out to help him.
He was at a truck stop with some of the work crew, and said " Mom, I am going to call you later, I am fixin to cry"
He has been touched by all of you.

That is why the KT is the best place ever!! And with him I guess traveling trust me...with Brian on the road we use the walmarts to send money alllll the time. IT is cheaper then Western Union and faster I think.....minutes.....Also there is a card you can fill out (I believe the company is called money gram) for frequent users and it gives you a little bit of a discount. Just wondering about these 2 posts about people in need. People that we don't know. And the different reactions to these 2 situations.
I'm not saying either one of these situations are scams or put-ons. Just showing the different responses to them.

Noocha, I would say the difference is that Trinity has been at the KT for a long time and many of us have known her from here for years. Even though we haven't met her in person, we know her on a different level and it's different than giving money to a complete stranger who we've never had contact with before. That's my take on it anyway.

noocha ~ Trin has been here a lot longer than I and we do feel we know her. If she has ever been to a get together there are several people that would know her personally. If a family member of a regular KT poster had a relative in my area who was stranded I would gladly help out.

I have helped out strangers in the past, but the longer I live the more I hear about con artists. If a stranger approached me in a store asking for money to help purchase medicine I would have probably told them I couldn't help them; I'm not sure. After reading the other thread someone mentioned going to the pharmacy with the person to help pay for the medication. If I had the means to help I think that would have been a wonderful idea. I honestly don't know if I would have thought to do it though. I'll keep it in mind in case that ever does happen to me.

I just think it's so nice to know we can turn to the KT to help in a time of need....that someone here would care enough to help without question or judging how he ended up this way. What a great place to hang out! I love this place, just for this reason! Just prayers and kind words make someone's day so much brighter! The question's and judging can make one afraid to come back and there is no need for it if it's a well known person around here and not a lurker trying to scam us.

My son and his friends were out in our old family van on a month long band tour of the Southwest. They were trying to launch their band, and were not even making gas money. They were in their early to mid 20s, and driving up and down hills in the very hot desert, the van gave out. They did not have that much money among them (of course) to pay for the repair, and a nice mechanic at the local garage fixed it for them free, seeing who they were. He too had a young son and understood their situation. That man was their angel too. Heaven bless him.

I agree with all of you. There are some people on a quilting forum that I've never met but would definitely help if I knew they needed something. I just find it interesting that we are like that. A flesh & blood person stands in front of us needing help & we're questioning whether she's running a scam or not. Someone we can't see, don't know, can't hear tone of voice or see facial expressions asks for help - of whatever kind - & we jump in with all 4 feet to help. Don't you find that interesting? We trust the internet more than we trust our gut instincts with a real person standing in front of us? We don't even know whether these people are male, female, old, young, etc. on the net but we take their word for whatever it is they're saying.

God Bless our KT Angel. It's all about community and taking care of each other, together. There is more kindness in this world, it just doesn't make headline news.

Hi everybody,
I am greatful to everyone who posts here, and although I do know some of you better than others, I consider this my family.
I completely understand that posts that seem to be "needy"
can be taken on several levels. There are so many scams out there now a days, that we are now more apt to look at the dark side of things more often. It is just human nature.
I can say with all of my heart, that I read your responses to noochas post with an overwhelming sense of feeling loved. You really do all know me well, and yes, I have been here for a long time, in fact one of my first posts was almost 6 years ago when my sons (same son) wife and daughter were in a car accident. His wife did not survive.
You did not know me from adam back then, but the outpour of
deep concern and sympathy was overwhelming. I knew from that day on, I had found my family. You all mean the world to me, and I would never think twice about getting in my car, or sending something big or small to help anyone here that I could help, be it them or any member of their family. That is what families do.
My son doesn't ask for help often, he has come a long way since 6 years ago, some good, some not so good, but I just
put out a cry for help, because I did not know what else to do. I was only looking for advice.
You all knew that, because you know me. And I know with positive certainty that I can post here anytime for help, or just fun, and we all are here for each other. That is what the K.T. is all about. Always has been, always will be.
My son is doing very well, and was truly touched by each and everyone of you. If nothing else, you have all taught him a valuable lifes lesson, that people do care, and want to help when they can. Even complete strangers. I hope he remembers this hardship and passes this lesson learned to someone that needs his help someday. I know he will.

I know that if it were my son,I would be frantic knowing he may be going hungry.God bless whoever has reached out with a helping hand.But for the grace of God,it could be any one of our children.
