a question about bin pulls and their installation

Has anybody here installed bin pulls on their kitchen drawers? I bought some at our Pottery Barn outlet and was all ready to install them, but got a little freaked out when I saw the screws. Unlike regular knobs, where the screws go clear through the entire thickness of the drawer-front, the screws provided just go a short ways into the wood. Well, that worries me a little so I've been putting off this project for a while now. I want to do it, but don't want to tear up my kitchen drawers and have the screws always coming loose.

My question is...is this going to work long-term? Or do those screws work their way loose over time? Should the screws be replaced with ones that can go through the drawers and have a nut secure them on the insides? IDK, maybe that's just overkill. Anybody had experience with this before?

You can take the screws with you to the hardware store and get longer one.

Well, I know I can go to Lowe's and get longer screws, that's not really my question. I was just wondering if A) people with bin pulls could tell me how theirs are installed and B) if it was actually going to be necessary/inevitable to have to use through-the-wood screws/nuts.

Greetings all! Grew sweets (Beauregard) in a rope bin. Harvested today. I was really nervous about them, b/c I had only seen vids and posts about regular potatoes in a bin. I planted 7 Home Depot transplants: 5/6/10 using lobster compost mixed with topsoil. I kept adding soil until the vines reached the top of the bin, no fertilizer. I checked on them in early September, as we had a really hot summer and I wanted to see if anything was happening down in that bin. I found scrawny roots mixed in with purple scrawny roots. So I gave them a really good soak a few times over a couple of weeks, them left them alone when the weather started to cool. We had an early frost and the vines had yellowed, but I didn't have time to check the bin and several rains came and went until I decided to check them today - the leaves were blackened. It's been really cold - 30s, 40s, 60s, so I doubted anything was going to happen. Really pleased with myself - now I'll have to see if they will cure in my cold, drafty house.

I agree that you shouldn't use bin pulls on doors. I think it would be awkward to open a door with a bin pull as opposed to a knob or a regular pull -- especially uppers. Use the cobalt blue glass knobs on your doors -- the combination with the bin pulls and your granite sounds beautiful! Also, IMO, you should use two bin pulls on any drawer that is 30 inches or wider, and/or where you have two cabinet doors below the drawer. I used three different kinds of hardware in my kitchen: bin pulls, suitcase pulls and knobs. The pic below shows all three. (The suitcase pull is on the trash pullout). Also, on every drawer 27" or wider, I used two pulls, with each pull centered over the doors below. Good luck!

I considered moving the trash to a different cabinet that is smaller, but I really want to keep it near the sink. (although it is currently located under my cooktop and I actually really like it there!) And I can't deduct 3" from that cabinet and add it to another because of where it's located (between supersusan corner cabinet and sink cabinet) The space will be completely divided by a wood partition from top to bottom, front to back, so I hope that garbage doesn't get in there!! However, I really only wanted to keep serving trays in there, which I don't use all that often and would probably rinse off before use anyway. Badgergal, that's exactly what I was thinking!! Was it difficult to get the trash hardware placed on the door exactly where it needed to be so that the door would fit into place correctly? That's my concern...especially since the doors are inset. I'll probably leave this for my contractor but I kind of need a plan in place to know if I should order an unattached door for that cabinet (to attach to garbage) or a regular door that opens to the side.

How much do I love Horton Brasses? Let me count the ways. Been working with them for many years in maintaining my antiques. They are amazing with the things that they can do, and have awesome customer service. I love your bin pull!!! All their kitchen cabinet hardware is nice. Unless things have changed, all their work is done to order, more or less, and done in the good old USA. They do a lot of custom stuff. I would either buy a handle that has cabinet screws that go thru the drawer or replace the screws you have with nuts & bolts.
We installed some pullout bins in DS's barn and used handles from HD. They have cabinet bolts/screws that go thru the frame.

Well, I can't help you with kitchen cabs but I just checked the bin pulls on our new guest bedroom furniture and they are drilled all the way through the wood.

It must just be that brand that only screws into the wood. My kitchen has bin pulls that go through like other drawer handles, and I've had no problems.

Mine have reasonably long strews...not as long as the knobs from the same set, which have much deeper holes.

we just installed our pulls and all the drawer cabinets needed longer screws. We bought 2" screw from HD that cut down to size and screwed all the way into the drawers.

I have Pottery Barn bin pulls - I know what you mean about the short screws.

Our drawer fronts are solid wood and there has been no problem with them coming loose. I guess you could use another screw with them, but if you are drilling the holes anyway, why not try the ones that came with it and see what you think? You could always swap them out with different screws if you are not happy.

I guess if you were putting them into something like particle board or something thinner, you might want to look at other options. I think our drawer fronts are about 1/2" thick.

Latimore, that is sooooo good to hear. Our drawer fronts are solid wood that is pretty thick, so I do feel more confident hearing that yours are doing OK. Maybe I'll get some time to do that in the next week or so :) How is the metal wearing? I have the chrome pulls to install. What do you have?

I have the oil rubbed bronze - the 6" length on most drawers, and the 3" on two smaller drawers.

They are wearing well. I'm happy! I have had them for about a year now.

Be careful with the screws, I scratched the finish on a couple when I was installing them. (You might put a thin cloth or something over the end of the screwdriver to protect them.) Fortunately I'd bought more than I needed so I had some extra screws to replace the ones I damaged.

They were really easy to install with just a drill, screwdriver, and level. Here's a picture - this kitchen is a work in progress...

Mine were a STEAL at the PB outlet - $6 for ALL of the longer ones. Considering that one Gilmore pull at Restoration Hardware was $13, I felt like a super shopper. (I did have to order the two smaller ones from the PB website - fortunately, they were a perfect match.)
